Ferry sail
« on: September 05, 2025, 05:05:54 pm »

Did some sailing with two of my 1:200 ferries. The Smyril that is a highly modified Revell QM2 kit, and the Visby that is a balsa build from GA plans.
Hope you enjoy!

Hi Hama,
I have found them so interesting and impressive to watch very much as respective motions of the model ships looked so realistic as if they were real ships struggling on the very rough seas somewhere in the North Atlantic Sea in the mid-winter...!!! :D
Though I have never experienced such sea travels in the region.. {-) {-) :D :D

One of the surprising impressions is that the ships never capsized at all in spite of such huge waves swinging them like small tree leaves. The RC ships appear to be well-balanced. You made the Great RC scale models really ,Hama.!! :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-))

My nightmare in the daytime is the following pic taken in the first trial run and she might have sit on the lake bottom in another 5 minutes or so. :-X  She took huge amount of water in the hull simply due to my poor skill and mistake consequently.. :-X <:(
Foredeck was already washed out though she continued trial run and a high hanger wall saved her...

Thanks a lot for your kind words!
I'm a bit surprised myself regarding their performance,  but as long as you keep the weight low down in the hull your fine. The problem i have is the same as for real vessels that when the strong wind hits the broadside it acts as a sail and you really struggle to get the bow upwind. All good fun though as you don't have to be on board yourself  :-)
All the best!

Oh, the pics are stunningly awesome and so realistic dioramas.!! You really may be one of the true RC boaters, hama !!!! :-)) :-)) :-))  They are surprisingly great fun, really.!!
Your style of enjoying the RC model ships is ideal as you enjoy building and operating the RC ships and appreciating videos of the consequent fun on your outdoor activities which I think are generally meaningful and fruitful for your hobby life. O0 :embarrassed:
Please keep on your own style of enjoying RC model boating hobby.!!!! :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-))  Wow!

Try to get the weight as far to the sides as possible, two strips of each half of total weight of ballast as far as possible in the sides, will be better than a single strip of full weight along the centreline.

This, because it will increase rotational inertia, and that inertia resists the boat being thrown on its side.
Usually, this works well enough that the importance of "as low as possible" becomes secondary. All 3 of my boats have the ballast approximately on the waterline (but for your boats I am NOT recommending that, since your boats due to how they are constructed, tend to be a bit top-heavy). But as long as you keep the ballast on the flat part of the bottom, the more you shift the weight to the side, the better it will behave.
