1/96 HMS Alacrity Type 21
« on: September 13, 2025, 04:30:27 pm »

New project,

As I’m stuck on my Type 26 at this time, so I had been sorting out my stock of hulls and found this Type 21 hull which is 25 years old, I got it from Paul Buckley (SIRMAR).

So I’ve decided to build this as a new project whilst awaiting T26 info.

Plans are from Jacobin and are for HMS Active, but I’ve decided to builder her as HMS ALACRITY as I’d visited the ship when she visited Southampton.
Alacrity will be built as she was after refit post 1982.

Magic stuff.  :-))

One of my fellow Service Engineers used to be the Chief Air Artificer aboard the Alacrity during the Falklands War, and he was a fount of tale of life aboard.

Hi Kits,

One of the areas where info is so short on the T 21s is the Hanger internals this is why 99% of T21s models have there door closed. I’d like to build mine with it open, could I ask if your friend has any pics that you could post.

Thanks.

Gents,

Started to make the running gear and alignment jigs. I’ve also compared the hull to the plans and there is a couple of areas that need attention.

These areas are the stern quarter deck closed fare lead hull section is the wrong angle and size, the midship hull side height is 5 mm low, so I’ll correct this when I do the internal framing. Also due to the hull being in storage for such along time it needs pulling in. Again this can be corrected when internal framing is done.

Sure, I'll drop Ted a line.

In the painting of the 'Atlantic Conveyor' in fire in the FAA Museum, the one with Prince Andrew's Sea King hovering over the bow, Ted was aboard the Lynx hovering over the stern and the 'Alacrity' is just off the starboard bow of the 'AC'.

Excellent model subject David, I'll be following your progress closely.
Before you go too far with the shafting, just be aware that contrary to the plans you are working from, the Forward Shaft Brackets on the Type 21's only had one strut positioned vertically to the Hull. As opposed to the traditional 'A' Brackets carrying the Aft shaft bearings with two struts in V-Form.
These were known as 'P' Brackets due to their upside down resemblance to the letter 'P'.

Hi Nige

Funny you say about the P Frame I did see a pic years ago showing it as P Type but could not find I again.
I did follow the plan however I can change what I’ve done back to a P.

Thanks

Hi Detomo,

Thanks for your interest in this build, I’ve not decided yet if I’m going to have the stabiliser working. In the past I’ve had them working but they have not really affected the model sailing. I think it’s down to scale. :-))

That will give you my favourite 2 model ships. Prinz Eugen closely followed by the Type 21's.

Hi T888,

The reason I asked I have built F173 HMS Arrow in 1/96. I struggled with ballast as they seem to be top heavy, the only way I found to keep it upright was to put an atachable pendelum connected to hull which works rather well for me  :-))

Hi Detomo,

Yep the Type 21s 1/96 models do suffer badly with stability issue if there not made with the top works very very light.

With all my warship models I work to a rule that if I add a gram of weight to the top it will require 3-4 grams to counter it. I’ll be making all my fitting super light and be using 0.75mm plastic card for the superstructure.

Years ago I took part in a national steering com, where a competitor had a type 21 sailing, it look as it was fixed to the water. I was so impressed with it until he took it out of the water and shown that he’d fitted a 18” model yacht keel to it.

Marked up some card for the top deck, whilst awaiting for some electronics components to arrive which I’ll instal before completing the superstructure

Wow, you've got this one coming on at some pace David, the hull looks just a it should from what I've seen of the Type 21's - good work :-)

Cheers,

Ray.

Thanks Ray

It’s nice to be able to get on with a project and not have to await for info {-)

I’ve decided to make Alacrity as she was during the early 90s. Based on a few days researching, Areas were this model will differs from the plan are

Hull side will have the addition of the strengthing beams.
Port side boat and davits were removed and replaced with a larger platform and two Gemini boats and a small post type Davit.
Starboard side boat was replaced with a RIB.
Starboard side chaff launcher platform was lengthened to house additional life raft canisters
Aft mast was upgraded.
Fight deck hanger area had the sides inclosed.
Also I’ve corrected plans where the shafts aft bearings changed from “A” to “P” as per KITS info.
