Action P80/P80S ESC
« on: September 28, 2025, 06:07:36 pm »

I've have just been given this ESC as part of a load of unwanted boat bits. I didn't know what it was until I had a look at the circuit board and that shows P80 but, having looked on the Component Shop website, I see that the bog standard P80 is for 3 or 5 pole motors only but the P80S will also handle 7 pole and more motors. Logically the P80S is the more versatile ESC but is there any way you can tell from bits on the board which version you have? I initially thought the 'big brown thing' might be variable then I realised it was just the relays so now I wonder if the PIC is different but it doesn't give much away in the instructions! Is it just a matter of trying it with a Buhler or similar multi pole motor?
Many thanks

Resistor value to the gate pin of the drive FET(s) might be lowered in the "s" version to prevent fet transistor getting hot at higher frequency.
The pwm frequency is raised in software, making a higher pitch sound while improving the low end throttle.
If it isn't immediately obvious to the ear, a piezo speaker or 64 ohm speaker will tell you if you don't have a frequency function on a digital meter.
