Hi, I am trying to think of the best way to reproduce the (I think wood decking ) on the French submarine surcouf I am restoring. The material would need to be thin, waterproof etc. there are not many genuine pictures of the submarine. But the ones I have seen show a part planked deck. I did think of making it out of etched brass, but the detail would be lost in the paint. Anyone have any ideas. Thanks

II suggest opting for a painted deck instead of a wooden one. A wooden deck looks great on a stationary boat.

Back in the 90s, a close friend of mine had a Surcouf. The dive system was a gas system, along with a homemade WTC. Could you please share some photos of your boat?

GRP takes some beating. If gauge is of maximum importance precast G10 epoxy glass sheet is about as thin as you can get unless you revert to either etched sheet metal or carbon fibre sheet. Precast sheet is much stronger than hand laid fibreglass and doesn't warp.
0.4mm G10 is remarkably stiff, it is available thinner, but I wouldn't go lower for a large model. If you want to simulate wood grain you could scribe in a pattern.

Hi,
I planked the deck of my type V11 with 3mm x 1/2 mm thick Mahogany strip, fixed it to the fibreglass top deck with superglue, has held up really well just recently painted the boat deck is now black.
Hopefully a photo of part of the deck.
