Ripmax Carlson Tug
« on: December 28, 2007, 11:01:09 pm »

Well Santa decided that I needed to get to the pond prior to completion of my current build projects and gave me a RTR Tugboat, the Carlson by Ripmax. A very nice tug which passed the tub trials. She comes with decals and fittings for the detail, however I intend to make a few aesthetic changes and rename her in honour of my recently deceased mother-in-law and call her My Irish Lil.
When I was going through the manual, I noticed that 'all the grease has been removed to fall within EU regulations and to please use vaseline to lubricate the parts required'.
So, any of you dealers or professionals who may have seen this RTR tug, am I to take the pre-installed prop shaft out to lubricate? and the rudder as well?
still high and dry at my bench.  ???
Robert

I hope you realise that you have single handedly started another EU myth...." all grease taken out to satisfy EU Regulations" indeed!

So, they greased it only to degrease it. Come off it, what they are saying is, "Let's make a fictional EU Regulation the reason for not greasing anything".

I suggest vaseline is not the way to go as it is gradually dissolved by water. Apply a silicone grease.

The best change I could think of is a nice wooden deck, this is what I did to mine and it removes the plastic feel. Also you can spray the cabin which does the same job.

Hi Robert,

By "noise in the propulsion system" do you mean the noise caused by the prop shaft vibrating?

I purchased one of these little boats as an introducer for my Grandson at Christmas '06, every time he comes over here we put time aside for us to go sailing so it has served its purpose.

I made up some life rafts and did other bits of dressing up for the boat and it looks quite good - most importantly my Grandson likes it-

I also made up and fitted some supports for the prop shaft to eliminate a lot of the vibration ( I used plastic clothes pegs) HOWEVER empirical testing has shown that (without supports) the vibration kicks in at approx 3/4 throttle so that has proved useful in teaching Lewis the value of settings other than full bore.

I wish you good sailing

Regards

Clegg

Hi Clegg,
Did not go out today, gales blowing across Torbay. How did you fit these cloths pegs in for support? If you could take a picture an email it I'll pm my email to you.
I plan to do her up as, just fun to get out whilst working on my other builds.
Cheers Robert  O0

Hi Robert
I picked one of these up about a couple of years ago ,like you to get me on the water whilst i got on with my main build.
All i did was put the stickers on and the fittings and away you go  about 3 months later it became part of the clubs ,have-a-go-boats  selection .
Had it out this weekend to pull the coaster around ,only to bring it out as the motor started cutting out , in the workshop last night a motor from stock was fitted so should be ok now.
Verdict a reliable (after 2 1/2 years abuse by the little angels at the shows) and a great little tugger  and like it was reviewed for conversion before on here ,it is open to a lot of detail ,or in my case not O0 .

Took mine out today,Two problems I have found the first problem I  found was that they will capsize, this has happened to me twice. Once it was because I turned broad side to the wind and the other I got too close to the club safety boats wake. The second is at full throttle the engine seems to lose power and blip. I don't know if this is common. :-\

Can I just add  that this problem must be with the electronic pre-installed because mine was the ARTR version.

That can't be the problem with all Carlsons. I know that there is nothing like that where I sail mine.

I find just running with a bit of throttle gives a nice scale speed. have added windows and doors, but stayed away from the supplied art-deco decals, will wait til spring refit when winter build is on the water til I sort out the propulsion. still good fun as a rtr boat.

put mine back in the water this weekend and she still cuts out although the motor is a bit faster the 15A esc should be able to handle it .
my next thought is for the esc ,do they wear out  .i will pit a new one in and see what happens .

looks good explorer O0 how did you do the wood decking, got a general idea from modelboats awhile back, but could use some neural stimulation. off to play Silent Hunter

There are two ways that I know about, the one I used was to use a piece of MDF then with a craft knife score lines in it, this then can be  coloured black with a pencil to show the planking gaps. However the other method that I have heard of, which is probably the same as yours is cutting individual planks and use black card between the planks. This in my opinion is a better method as it gives a more textured and realistic look, this however is also a very time consumming method. So what method you chose is down to the detail you want and the amount of Patience you have.

When I was doing the deck of my paddle tug, I got sheets of wooden flooring strip from "The Dolls House" and did the lines in between with a very thin, black, marker pen.   I then varnished over.   Pete M

O0 thanks alot gents, I think the idea of a felt pen sounds ok for my purposes here. there has been an on-going build in modelboats of a paddlesteamer and I believe thats how he did his. Don't get much privacy at mine for reading so I read that mag in the privy {-)

Have you ever thought about putting some more towing equipment on the aft deck, things like the rope hoop or a drum winch. Just to clutter up the deck a bit.
