here's a question. what would you use to clean up the lines from the moulding process on white metal fittings?

"WHITE METAL FITTINGS

Clean up any flash, or mould lines on cast metal fittings, using fine files or fine sandpaper. Surfaces, which are to be flat should either be filed or rubbed across a sheet of Wet and Dry paper glued to a surface (use a contact adhesive). Apply a coat of primer or matt white paint before final painting.

Spraying and painting small fittings like railings and vents can be a bit of a trial. Drill a piece of flat wood at intervals to take the parts, then cover in double-sided sticky tape; push the parts into place to be held firm by both tape and hole. You can then spray away to your hearts content and they will stay put."

(With thanks to Model Slipway's Hints and Tips web page).

In addition, you can give the part a good scrub with a fine brass-wire brush (e.g. a suede brush) to polish it up. I then give 'em a wipe over with white spirit, IPA or meths before applying the primer, to make sure there's no black residue left to spoil the paint job.

Works for me - suit yourself.

Most of my fettling of White Metal parts is done with rat tailed files and emery boards.  Then finish off with wet and dry if required.

If the flash or mould lines are very pronounced you can save the files and emery paper for the last remnants and use a knife blade in the first instance.

So, if you need to join 2 pieces of whie metal, which is the best adhesive?
I was advised sperglue before and it doesn't seem to work for me. :D

I use a two part epoxy or such as "Araldite".  The slow cure one is supposed to be a lot more waterproof that the rapid stuff but once it is painted over I don't think it matters too much unless it is going to be continuously immersed in water.

Hi again Robert, apply small drop of superglue to one surface [after cleaning], apply next part to position required, hold down with a steady pressure for a few seconds, do not try to reposition. If this doesn't work, buy a tin of activator. Do as before but spray with small amount of activator when in position. that'll do it. O0

O0Thanks Richard, these are the last little bits on the Vosper prior to painting. Looking not to bad so far. Had to do a few mods to lock cabin on, but the old grey matter needed some exercise.
Thanks again
