The props in your pusher tug should be shrouded in kort nozzles, or at least tubes of some sort. The shrouds would negate any sideways creep caused by the pitch of the props.  Otherwise stick to two screws and opt for the single rudder to the rear and two to the front of each prop, for more detailed info see Towboat Joe's website.

Tommo, I dont think it would be really beneficial - a triple prop screw.   I know they used them a lot in MTBs and stuff, but, to be honest I dont think I have ever seen/ever heard of 3 propped tug.  I might be wrong mind, and I am here to be corrected.  But triple screws and quad screwed vessels are built for speed.

I think the idea of a twin screwed tug to give more power by medium to slow r.p.m. on the shaft with as large as possible diameter propeller and a fine pitch - cant make me mind up if its a fine or a coarse pitch - too much on me mind, just been told its Christmas in a few weeks time  ;) ;) ;) {-)

John,
Tugs usually have large fairly course props which revolve relatively slowly.
This reduces cavitation and gives a good "bite" from the water.

Which Afon?
This one ! http://www.sfmbc.net/page105.html

7 Down....5 along.
8 Down....4 along.

Look anything like the 'Caradog' maybe? Although I've named her 'Afon Clwyd'. Any comments would be appreciated.

But.....is it anyways looking like the 'Caradog' you think?
The original plan was for the 'Afon Alaw' but I hated the wheelhouse, reminded me of a wedding cake, that extension to the rear of 'Caradogs' wheelhouse made all the difference to the look for me, so I based it on that. I found out from the builder that is was for storing the inflatable but quick access when its needed.
Perhaps you could see it at one of the tug towing events some time....never know....you may even have a go!

Yes I would say you have a good likeness there and I will show your Pict's off when I get back to work. It  looks like I'm of to N, Ireland soon and then to Holyhead (yep the home of the company)

I have tried to get to some of the model mettings but I seem to be at work going or getting ready to come home when they are on or SHMBO (spanner) needs to go in the opposite direction to the meeting venue. and we all know that to continue with the model making life it-is best to let her think she is in control

My Perkasa runs quite well with 2 normal props for the outside pair (be they termed left or right handed) with only the middle prop being the other hand, if that makes sense.
My thinking being that the water flow between props is then going in the same direction.

Pictures & video of operation with my own design mixer being at:

Hi BarryB,
I think from reading the various threads that the vessel in question 'Perkasa' is one which is used in the lakes at a fast speed in the forward movement.
I doubt that there would be any noticeable "prop walk" in this direction, the reason there seems to be such a large discussion on the direction of twin props is possibly drawn from "close quarters handling maneuvers" as in with tugs and attendance craft. With scale models as with real size vessels there is a motion found when astern is engaged. This motion can and is counteracted by opposed rotation. (I will say that it is not the only way) also as you have possibly read that the different directions create different results in such as 'innward' = one 'outward' = another and then on a different shaped hull it could even reverse those findings.
I even have the pleasure of working aboard a tug that has both props turn the same way, (be it that they are in Kort's) but this even shows up in having tows on the 'hip' we tend not to ride on the STBd as steerage is not too good, but ride on the Port and control is super.
In all of this I would state that there is no correct or wrong way to have prop direction, but to find out what is the best running on your build and have it at that. (purists will no doubt hound me for what I have said)
I may not have been building models for very long and I will be honest and say I am still learning thanks to the wealth of knowledge on this forum alone.

Just read through this again and Ouch I sound hard! where I was only trying to mark out the differences as I said I don't see a right or wrong way but it would be what way you (the model Maker / opperator) found to be acceptable. I hate smileys but  :) :)

I should imagine multi shaft tugs would be shallow draft vessels, which do not have the draft to accomodate a large screw or twin screws for a required horsepower/bollard pull.
