From the bench of someone who uses a Dremel and superglue 9 hours every day:

Don't drill your fingers
Don't glue your fingers
Don't glue your fingers to the drill
Don't glue your drill to your fingers
Cutting wheels hurt
Don't wrap the drill into your shirt
Don't be tempted to superglue scalpel / dremel wounds together
DO NOT POUR KICKER ONTO SUPERGLUE REPAIRED WOUNDS
Don't blow superglue into eyes
Don't blow superglue and kicker mix into eyes
Stop drilling your fingers..

The list goes on..

Well young padawan.  One is learning fast. When you have learnt the intermediate injury list  you may progress to wind tunnel basic injury list.

That involves hitting your head a lot yes? I'm already skilled at hitting my head on the bottom of the tunnel

That's only part of it. Head hitting, screws in knees and feet, crap in eyes from looking down the wind tunnel when it's on, being hit with random debris from said tunnel. Running hot melt glue over your fingers,  using runny superglue then putting your hand on the floor, etc etc etc

Don't try it  %)...but Superglue will not glue your eyes shut

30 something years ago, a naval mechanical trainee engineer was assembling a certain weapon component with Superglue & when tapped, a  spurt of glue ended in the supervising Foreman's right eye >>:-(

The Foreman was unable to open his eye & assumed he would be blinded  <:(

Naval doctors simply poured an orange saline solution over 1/2 of the Forman's face, however the eye would not open even with force from the Doctors

Thankfully the Sydney Eye Hospital was only a hop, step & a jump up the road from the dockyard

Upon admission, the Surgeon said get this man a cup of tea....he is to relax in a darkened room for 10 minutes...so after the 10 minutes had expired & the cup of tea consumed....the Surgeon said to the patient.......

'Cyanoacrylate adhesive has no affinity with water, your eye is not glued together, the spurt of superglue upon hitting the surface of your eye would have immediately turned to crystals of sand like material....do not rub your eye, but slowly open it'...........

It opened & the crystal like material washed out...it was an involuntary action on behalf of the mind on the assumption that my eye was glued together.......

Safety glasses were not mandatory 30 years ago.......Derek

I don't know if anyone has done this before, so don't shout at me as I have just thought of it!

Need acrylic type sheet for fake glass for windows etc.?
You need a home encapsulator. Put through as many sheets as you need for thickness inside one sheet of A4  ( 4 sheets are usually enough for most modelling requirements) on a hot setting and you will find it comes out very well. I use Lidl sheets which come in very cheap packs so making your own 'glass' works out at a fraction of a penny per A4 sheet instead if £1 at your shop! Experiment for yourself with colours, thicknesses and see what you can invent. Share with us what you discover.

I often have to make sheets of  'imitation glass'  and am interested in your comments.

However.... What is an encapsulator ?  and what  'sheets from lydl'  do you mean please.

I think he's talking about a "laminator" It's an interesting idea.

Yes, laminator is another name for it. The sheets I buy are from LIDL stores Ken.
BTW, when I said '4 sheets', I meant 4 thicknesses of sheet!

When sealing around a bath with silicone sealer.
Fill the bath with water and allow the silicone sealer to cure overnight.

Hence the silicone will not part from either the wall tiles or the bath at a later date.

Ask my Mum about the Deep Heat thing. Dad had rubbed her knees with it and shortly afterwards started to make love to her. You can guess the rest. she spent some time in the bathroom wit the cold water running. Oooops He never made that mistake again.Howevers what I am giving no  is a tip When using  plank on frame roll a pencil firmly over one side of the strip. This will put a curve in it which helps fit the plank to the frame. Other woods can also be given the same treatment but will need more pressure  from a dowel or  similar. Soaking and or ammonia helps even with ply I'm talking about BALSA initially of course. Also useful when laminating curved parts

Good luck and mind the rubbing oil cream etc .

P.S. Just recalled a rub we used when racing cycling it was CURACHO     Good stuff John

UNLESS the floor has gone soggy which they often do. I replaced lots of them when I was plumbing but in one house almost 3/4 of all the timber in the house. All the ground floor except the stairs and the bathroom and half of two bedrooms All had to go Dry rot from a previous lotof rotted wood being left under the floor with a lod of rubbish which blocked airflow so be warned

Uses for a plastic milk bottle apart from sticking a mast and sails on it.

Hi all, if you need to bail out water quickly try this.
Take a plastic milk bottle with handle, square section, screw the lid on tight and holding the handle use a carving knife to slice off the bottom third at an angle away from you.  You can now scoop up water with the flat edge to the floor.
Works as a cheap dinghy bailer as well.

Blocked drains.

I had a drain to clear some years ago and I used a different version, but you need the 1 litre size bottle.  For this you cut out a section from above the middle leaving a pint size bottom section but keeping the handle attached.
The plastic bottle fits into a domestic drain, push it down, let the bottom part fill and lift it out and tip away the contents, repeat until you can see the blocked side tube, usually smelly congealed fat.
This now becomes a very lonely job!

FREE planking!

Next time you go for a coffee at Mc Donalds grab some of the wooden stirrers, these make good planking among other things once sanded/varnished etc ;)

Hi Tizdaz, I got a bundle of used coffee stirrers a couple of years ago.  The wood is of poor quality and there seems to be a coating on the wood.  I went through all of them when making two ramps for a boat,  I threw away 80% of them, however they did go to the lesser job of mixing glue etc.
I have been making model boats for over 60 years now and I have come to the conclusion that if you use low quality materials they will fail, warp, go brittle etc.
Also glueing some materials can be guesswork, I was given some plastic separators from a music shop many years ago.  I made a small model boat, which was fine for a year or so then the glue joints started to fail.  I used the right glue for ABS, but was it ABS?
If you want to construct something to last then make sure it is made of suitable materials.
Even more important is to spend time on the right finish especially for wood then the colour needed afterwards.
Hope this helps,
Roy
