reversing a servo
« on: April 23, 2008, 08:42:44 pm »

I have two servos, side by side, working of a Y-lead so they operate as one. The arms have to "point" outwards. I want both arms to move in opposite directions so that they both "push". Any ideas

Can you not swop the pos and neg cables over on one of them.
Check first in case Im wrong though they are only electric motors after all. If you use a pin you can remove the connections from the plug. O0

Turing one thru 180 was my first method, doesnt work like that.  If i had the arms both pointing left, or right, yes, but they have to point out. swopping the wires doesnt work.
keep them coming

NO!!!
There is a motor in there, but also a bunch of electronics, which will release the magic smoke if power is reversed.  The red and black are the power, the white is the signal wire.  The signal that controls the servo is a series of pulses, and its the duration of the pulses that tells the servo what position the arm should be in.  The way it works is that the electronics looks at the pulse and gives it a value.  It looks at the position sensor which is attached to the output gear and compares that with the pulse.  If they agree, nowt happens, if they disagree, the motor is driven until agreement is reached.
What is wanted here is a magic box called a servo reverser.  I know I've seen them advertised in the past, but don't know if they are still around.  The other answer is to build in a reversing link.  Electronics is probably simpler, mechanical cheaper.

You can do it by modifying the servo....

Swap the outer leads on the potentiometer used to sense the position. Swap the wires on the terminals of the motor - this should make the servo go anti-clockwise when it clockwise. You have to swap all four wires though. And if the pot is PCB Mounted you are knackered. If the motor is PBC mounted it is relatively easy - just desolder it and turn it through 180 degrees.

i thought you could buy Y leads that either produce an equal or opposite movement on the servos ,like on aircraft where using a Y lead for ailerons and twin elevators where they do not work the same , ??? now i am getting confused !.

Hi Wombat,

What you need is this:

http://www.servoshop.co.uk/index.php?pid=JP7721044&area=ACCS

There is no simple way to alter the electronics to make it go in the opposite direction but there are devices around that will do this job for you. This one is £7.50 and incorporates the whole Y-lead, it is possible that a google search for "servo reverser" will find you a cheaper and simpler version if you want, but I think this is the kind of thing you need to do the job.
