Liverpool Pilot Boat
« on: March 25, 2008, 05:12:07 pm »

I am thinking of building the Liverpool Pilot Boat "Edmund gardner" as I have alwayd admired the vessel and spent 30 years working with the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board. The vessel is in the dock at the Liverpool Maritime Museum so photos are not a problem and there are plenty on the internet anyway. Where I would like some guidance is thinking about the hull. The Maritime Museum can supply plans, (£40 though) but as I have never built a hull from scratch I wonder how I can find out if there are any suitable ready made hulls available.
If not, what comments do mayhemmers have on buillding hulls from scratch. It sounds a tall order. Before I part with £40 I would appreciate any feedback from fellow mayhemmers.
Regards,
John

John,

Build ing a scratch hull is not as dificult as it sounds or is made out to be at times. The Edmund Gardner should be straight forward really as there are no dificult curves to get around.

£40 is not that unreasonble when compared to the National Maritime Museum, a set of cheaper, perhaps, drawings of the Sir Thomas Brockelbank (SP) can be obtained from Brown, Son & Ferguson Ltd Glasgow as well.

If in doubt always ask there are plenty of people on here and in the area who will help you.

Hello John

I've built several boats from scratch but never from a builders plan. I would say give it a go. I recommend the book Ship Modelling from Scratch by Edwin B Leaf ISBN 0-07-036817-1 which covers building from plans and drawing plans from photographs as well as hull building.

You won't know until you try.

All the best

Thanks Martin, I have just had a look at their site and they are not too far away. Also thanks to LB. I am also in Wallasey so we might meet up sometime. Incidentally, I wasn't complaining about £40 for the plans, I just wanted some idea regarding what I might be able to do prior to spending the cash. I am sure I will have a go at this vessel, probably with the grp hull from Scale models although, at some stage, I suppose I should have a go at producing my own hull!!!!
