Kits, Modelling and pet hates ?
« on: July 17, 2006, 06:12:14 am »

Hi Guys.

I am about to enter the next stage of my build of my Italian Vaporetto ( see Your Builds ) & got to wondering if , like me, you have a few pet hates with sections of a build ?

My next build stage involves, loads of wire bending for seating.....

I absolutley hate wire bending , am completely useless at it.....and I don't like it !!

Soldering is another...... I have tried and tried...... If its for joining wire /making connections...... no problem..... as they are functional and usually unseen....

If its railings ?? arghhh...... I can't do it !

I'd be interested to see if any other have aspects of kit building/modelling they don't like /enjoy ?

Steve

Steve, here is a list of my "favourites" in modeling..

1. Nearly all electrical jobs. I hate wiring! Everything with more than 12 Volts or 3 cables is pesky!
2 Sanding. Or much better, sanding when you have sprayed the first shift and you find dents and bumps!
3. Glueing, especially when you have made a new mixture of 2-K mould and somebody calls you on the phone, needs a lift, wants the bycicle repaired, asking questions or needs some explanations, or calls you for diner...  :P

Oh, where to start?

1. You have a beautiful, shiny GRP hull, pristine and perfect and then you have to bash huge great holes in it to fit propshafts and rudder tubes, hopefully in the right place. ?I hate that bit.

2. I also hate aligning motor/mount/shaft etc. ?It always seems perfect when I leave everything setting over night. ?The following evening the shaft is stiff as a stiff thing and the motor's sagged over to one side and the shafts (for multi-shaft boats) are anything but parallel! ?I don't even like to remember what it was like!

I actually don't mind the soldering up of bits and pieces. ?Mind you, I never used to, but I have got to grips with it now, also wire bending. ?My secret is jigs, not a little dance (though resting a hand on the hot end of the iron can lead to such 'performances') but bits of timber and ali to hold things in place while soldering is going on and also to help form curves and bends.

Best of luck with your chairs

Wire bending - slowy improving
Soldering deck detail - who knows what it will be like when the EU approved stuff is used - having palpitations thinking about it.
Drilling vertical holes - I really must get a decent pillar drill
Aligning motors - don't even talk about it
Putting the boat in the water for the first time - always have the collywobbles even though I have never had a problem

Come to think of it maybe I'm in the wrong hobby ;D

Cheers

I hate painting and always admire those flawless shiny paint jobs that others seem to have. I have found a way around the problem. Most of my fast electric boats are supplied in a brighly coloured plastic and I decorate them using stickers and Fablon. This leaves just small details to be highlighted with the brush.

I suppose you could say that the awkward bit comes between opening the box and sailing the completed model... ;)

hope i`m not the only one that sufferes from superglue fingerprints appearing over night on a nice fresh hull ?  even on parts taht you have no recollection of even touching !!

it semms kind of sadistic how you curse at the model, get paint on the furniture,table/cat/dog/ kitchen. parts never seem to fit , you spend hours just aligning three parts togethor, Forever seem to find parst that need sanded, yet we do this for enjoyment and relaxation  :)

... ask my kids, they will tell you that the most difficult stage of my model boat build is the 'working up to removing the dust off the top of the box' stage - in terms of years that is!  ;D

I'm doing some work on a Graupner kit and so far we've found at 8 significant mistakes or manufacturer changes between the plans and the material supplied. Grrrrr  >>:-(

I always have problem with aligning motor and propshaft, I swear some times the couplings are no good, not running true. I also dislike painting the final coat, it is surprising how many things want to land on wet paint.

Maybe this is why I like the idea of sailing working boats. If you look at any fishing boat, they are all a bit bashed about and imperfect. So for me it is easy  ::)
