contact glue?
« on: March 23, 2008, 02:19:03 pm »

I cant find a glue folder, so I'll have to post here ;D.
I'm now ready to stick the wooden moulding to the side of the boat, but the bow is curved enough that even though I've curved the moulding, I am worried any normal glue will pull off before it sets.
So is there any recommendation for a contact glue?
I dont want to pin the wood, its likely to split on me.

Whichever glue you decide on use loads of clamps, when i put the bulwark capping on my fishing boat i used epoxy resin clamped it in position and left it for 24 hours.

Theres no way I can clamp this, its around the side edge of the bow. I can use sticky tape, but because its a diminishing curve, I cant even use string around the boat, as it would just sldie forward and loose.

I'm looking for some kind of evo-stick contact adhesive, just wondering if anyone has a specific recommendation?

Evostik is actually pretty good. I've just used it to attach the wood capping rail to the top of the bulwarks on my Deans Medea steam yacht build. there is quite a curve to the bows and it worked very well. You do have to be careful not to leave squeezed out glue on the hull though as it's difficult to get off when fully set. Use cellulose thinners or white spirit on piece of cloth to wipe/rub it off.

PS: the proper solvent stuff that glue sniffers like is the best. Not only does it stick better but you feel really good about it afterwards. {-)

On my tube it says "Multi Purpose Impact Instant Contact Adhesive" (Highly Flammable, Irritant and Dangerous for the Environment - just like a good Mayhem Member)

When sticking wood to wood/plywood, cover one surface with a thin coat of exterior PVA glue and then add "on top" of the PVA a few strategic drops of superglue (cyanoacrylate): I've used both thick and thin: doesn't seem to make much difference.

Hold, clamp or tape the surfaces together for a few seconds and the cyanoacrylate holds fast until the PVA bonds.

As always, have a trial run on duplicate or scrap first

Hello.

PVA and Superglue is also known as the " Chemical Clamp".
One glue sets the other one almost at once, so no mechanical clamps are needed.
I have tried it and it does work, BUT, get everything lined up before bringing the parts together, no second chances !!!.
