Have fun, people. Our regatta is off - up to 60 knot winds and 8 metre seas on the beaches, plus over 200 mm of rain.
Wish I was there <:(
The photos show what our beach usually looks like, and what it's like now.
Peter.

Hello
The camera is a "fly cam" unit. I got it in a resent trip to OZ. Here is the Oz link so you can find it . You can get them over here, my local model shop can get them if you need one.

Thanks for taking photos - looks like a great weekend of boating and meeting other modellers! Weather certainly is on your side!
-
Some absolutely gorgeous models.
I do hope you mean the actual boats, and not referring to the last picture just before your post.. %%
-
well, what can i say, sun sun and more sun. Friday was gusty, sailing Nordie with Stavros around, the wind started to blow Nord Icelandia around, and with a vessel so low to the water, drastic action had to be taken, result: one rescued boat, one very wet Ghostie, and Stavros curled over double laughing his self to bits like a demented psychopath
-
Fantastic weekend all round - never seen so many boats of different types.
A huge thank you to Martin who masterminded it and also to his helpers, particularly his family (great curry), Bradders and a special mention for Steamboat Phil and Stavros, neither of whom appeared to take their waders off for the entire weekend :o. Phil even ran the barbeque in his on Saturday night!
And not forgetting the stalwarts of the Wickesteed Park host club without which none of it would have been possible.
Colin

oh i forgot to add, after laughing like a psychopath after I went in after nordie before she sank, Stavros then cursed himself cos he didnt have a camera. saturday went well, especially with the Omra race boats doing a demo, and Bill's unicorn d203 kamikazeing a bouy, then landing on the water on its roof, for that 10 out of 10 for artistic flare.

The heart of the beast of Llanberis.
I allowed a Slovakian guy take the helm of Espirit D'Atlantique, with her batteries shoved RIGHT AT THE REAR of the boat, she planed nicely.

The night sail, a time of barbeques, beer and boats, though for the most of it I had taken my socks off, yes I will come clean, I shimmied out onto the arm of the dock to free Yamato after another person at the helm wrapped the props up, in doing so, I fell in, this made Stavros feel OH SO HAPPY, he almost fell backwards out of his chair, and guess what, young at 65 found it quite funny too. never mind, its only water.
Youngat65, come back, you're missed on the forum!
During the time of the barbeque, Andy N's old trainer plane was attempted to be destroyed by springers, result the plane did severe damage to Chingdevil's springer, however the tail got spiked by the Najade.

cut to sunday. :)
yet more mayhem!
the lake was like a millpond, though when we got there, all that changed.
I had put a new motor on the Celestia, and gave it a run, nice low revving motor of mustang mark. now I need to up the power as according to Stavros, Celestia is now underpowered. not to worry as she will get 9,6v soon.

My first but definitely not my last Mayhem weekend! What a fabulous time, the atmosphere, the models, the weather,
Thanks to EVERYONE who helped put on this great event.
Thanks too, to everyone who came off the water to allow us "noisy nutters" to have a play. I know we ruined the tranquility, but we hope you enjoyed 'our bit of fun' - we certainly did :-))

Evening all!
Terrible weekend, rained all day both days, no one turned up, everyone was in a bad mood, the boats that
did turn up were rubbish, there was a plague of frogs and the water turned to blood just before an earthquake
emptied the lake...... no, wait a minute, that was the nightmare on Friday night!
WHAT A GREAT WEEKEND!!!!!
I'm r e a r l l y tired now but just a quick 'thank you's' to the:
Wicksteed Park management,
Wicksteed park MBC and in particular Martin & Nigel, very, very helpful,
Bradders for all the prompting, nagging, support AND fixing up the trailer,
SteamboatPhil.... for bringing most the event with him on the roof of his mota.... including Andy,
(We need to find a way of bottling Phil as a panacea for any form of depression!)
Chingdevil, the Bishop, Stavros and Welsh Druid for their constant support, advice and encouragement,
Andy for adolescent positivity, 2nd to none,
PD for providing the extra boot space and hand for the marquee,
Ron or Deans Marine,
John of Model Power,
Dave, Action man,
Jag or Palaform,
and ALL Mayhemers that came, sailed a boat or even just shook my hand. :-))
Loads more pictures tomorrow .... but I need time to sort them out first .... I did take 3,015 ....plus 73 video clips!
Night night!
Oh and Ghosty!

Hello All,
After 3 years I finally got to Wickstead !!, what a wonderful Event, all over all too soon, I had to leave on Saturday evening.
Got home shattered, with a very red face from the Sun, I think we had some "Global Warming" - - not before time!.
My Thanks to Martin and everybody else who helped set the Event up.
There is a short Video of what was going on at my website www.john-dowd.co.uk
John. :-) :-) :-)

'ERE 'ERE to all that's been said!
Superb day on Sunday and, yet again, thanks to Martin et al.
-
I would just like to say what a fantastic day I had on Saturday and also how proud I am to be one of the Mayhemers. I am sure the rest of the Mayhemers would agree with me that it takes a special kind of person, to produce such a happy weekend for so many. So I would just like to say A VERY BIG THANKYOU TO MARTIN FOR ALL OF HIS TIME AND HARD WORK HE PUTS INTO THIS WEBSITE AND FORUM AND HE SHOULD ALSO BE PROUD OF HIS DEDICATED AND LOVING FAMILY THAT HE HAS. MRS MAYHEM AND THE REST OF THE FAMILY IN MY HEART DESERVE FIRST PRIZE FOR THEIR DEDICATION. IT IS GREAT IN THIS DAY AND AGE TO SEE SUCH A LOVING FAMILY PULLING TOGETHER AND WORKING AS A TEAM. I FEEL THAT THEIR LOVE AND DEDICATION FEEDS ON TO THE REST OF US. THIS IS WHY THERE WAS SUCH A FEEL GOOD FACTOR THIS WEEKEND.
I just can't wait until the next Mayhem weekend in Wales (home of the Stav). Thankyou to Phil, Stav, Brian and the rest of us who had the barbeque on Saturday night for your kind hospitality. Next year I am definately camping and doing two days no I correct myself I am going to take the Friday off and help set up.
To all of you Mayhemers out there have a fantastic Bank Holiday Monday.
This is Debbie the other half of DEBSSNAL, look forward to meeting you all next year at Wicksteed 2010, there is no way I am going to miss it. :-)) it looks and sounds so much fun. There is no way I am letting Alan have it all to himself.
Thankyou
Kind regards
Debbie and Alan

this is my personal favorite is that absolutely stunning river yacht powered by a gasoline strimmer engine, not the fastest model on the water but it has the most presence on the water and was driven with some care.

What a fantastic weekend at Wicksteed. :-))
My thanks go to Martin and his band of helpers for putting on such a great event. Third time lucky with the weather. I brought my gazebo to keep the UV rays from my head but bought a Mayhem cap instead. Just as well, as I never had time to just sit and relax. Interesting things to see and people to talk too. Very busy time showing off MMB's Smoke machine in my Waverley
Not many pictures from me as I didn't have time to get my camera out. Once again, thanks to everyone involved for making an old man happy.
Cheers

I missed being there, it looks like you all had a great time, still at least Stavs tables stayed un scorched this time (watch out at LLanberis!!!) Hehehe
Thanks to every one who has asked about me and how I am doing.
See you all very soon.

OK
I have sorted out the sunburn and emptied the car, did I really get that much into a Vauxhall Vectra, must travel lighter next year other wise I will be taking as much as Steamboatphil does (did you know he has nearly perfected the art of straight running another couple of years and he will be good at it) %% %% %% %% %%
I would like to give a really big thank you to Martin and Bradders for once again putting on a great weekend. Another really big thank you for Mrs Martin (Ruth) who put up with us lot pestering her for tea and coffee all weekend, without complaint, well I never heard her. Also a thank you to the young Martins who were also helping with the tea ration.
A big thank you to Wicksteed Park for letting us loose once again, particularly Nigel who is so helpfull and can not do enough for us.
A big thanks to all the people I met and the fun we had, I had a really great time. The weekend was even better this year as we did not have to battle the elements, swmbo did question why I brought a gazebo to shelter from the rain though.
Next year will be better, as long as the weather is as good, so no excuses lets have gazebos around the entire lake side and create even more MAYHEM :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-))

I can now die happy :}: I have seen why steamboatphil (Why IS he called that :}) wears that titfer
Yes Andrew, it was certainly interesting to watch the "firing up" of his boat!
Almost a pagan religous er - ritual ! The setting alight - the boiling water squirting back on him - the shielding from the steam with the hat - the blood and floating fingers starting the prop - the agitated waving as it veers graceful way off course - and finally - the "love cuddle" at the end of the run (as the prop tries to rip the front off his waders!
Yes, it's enough to enthuse anyone - that's why it's took him 20 years to get this bad good :-)) {-) {-)
(and then to get whupped by Stav the learner :embarrassed: :embarrassed: )

Hi Andrew, did we shake hands.... it's all a bit of a blur at the moment....!

Can that photo of Phil be photo of the month ;)
Have you found what the problem with your esc was yet Andy #1?
-
Martin, I'm not surprised at all!
Yes I got to shake your-nonmicrophone hand :} Honoured, sir :}
You wouldn't remember everyone - I am a little unobtrusive chap whose boats (mostly) didn't go (rubbish preparation) apart from a 24 inch Thames barge and a red and green footy called SLOICE
I do have a few pics of the Phil stoking his promethean device and a few of it in action, including one where I have only the stupendous wake, but no paprika or bods :((
Didn't get Phil's slip catch to the right (the hug and curse one) either.
Have you ever, Phil considered something safe like pulsejets or fulminate tap-dancing?
andrew
Pics follow when I liberate them from the little black thing

Er, could that be me? (I never see myself in that light)
Can that photo of Phil be photo of the month ;)
Have you found what the problem with your esc was yet Andy #1?
My Brushless ESC lost its smoke - later PM showed that 2 FETs out of 6 have given up the ghost - both on one channel. I put the failure down to weeding of the prop adding just toooooo much load.
Good news is that the rest of the ESC works - I may try and solder in a couple of replacements - what have I got to lose?

I think you lot have got it in for me
Now having returned and at last unloaded the car (oh and the roof rack), had some sleep and cleared away the mess that was dumped into the house, I would just like to add my thanks to Martin and Ruth (who once again kept me in tea) It was without a doubt a fantastic weekend, it was again a pleasure to meet up with all the Mayhemer's that I knew, and to meet some new ones (finaly meet AndrewH) Many thanks must also go to the Wicksteed club for not only allowing total "Mayhem" on their pond but also being very accomadating in all our requests, and a special thanks of course to Nigel who helped out with all sorts of bits and piceices (including late night storage of all the boats)
Now was it just me or did it seem vaguly organised this year ???? good heavens next year we might even have a cunning plan (but then where's the fun in that)
Oh and is that not my boat scoring a bullseye (Stavros please note------) O0
Time for me to try and grow my singed hair back me-thinks, or shall I go back to my wig (thanks Andy) :-)
Oh and get some paint out------- :-)) :-)) :-)) :-))

Hi all
Wicksteed - so good I went there twice!
Just a quick note to add another thank you to Martin, Bradders and everyone who contributed to the weekend either in the organisation or just by being there. I kept changing my plan between bringing the caravan for the w/e, coming for one day and not being able to get there at all! In the end I settled for coming on Saturday and brought the silaing boat Karoline. I packed very carefully and remembered the boat stand, transmitter, batteries, in fact I thought I'd got everything until I came to fit the drop keel. It was still in the workshop :(( Never mind I had a great afternoon chatting and having a close look at a Colin Archer being sailed by someone from the Wicksteed club. Anyway not sailing was such fun I decided to come back on Sunday! On Sunday I took the steam launch Fair Constance (Krick Victoria) as well. Guess what, I fired up the boiler and no sooner than I had pressure than there's a steam leak from the lubricator. It looks like a stress crack around the steam inlet to the body. Ah well so ended my attempt a steam boating >:-o
I did manage a sail with Karoline having brought the drop keel this time. At least she wafted around the lake for a while in the occasional puff of wind.
So not a lot of action from my boats but a fun weekend and of course I now wish I'd brought the caravan and stayed over. Ah well there's always next year (please martin!)
Cheers
Guy

Froggyt996 is my good pal Graham, who with are respective partners attended your brilliant Wicksteed show.
Had typed up a detailed reply very late last night/early this morning but pc had crashed while typing,
and would not let me send the final message, will have another try tonight.

Hi Proteus,
Swordsman was built from 33" MAP plans modded to the open rear cockpit version used for racing,
the original MAP plans & 60's Aerokits Swordsmans had an aft rear cabin similar to the later Huntsman 31
(kit models of these are seen regularly at lakes all over the country).
The motor is a 4240 1050kv outrunner from Giant Cod £23, 2x6 cell 3300mah nimhs packs, Overlander 60amp speed controller,
the speed secret is the Huge 50mm 4 blade steam prop, revelled to me by Alan (Debs'nAl) who has posts re this subject on this website,
thanks again Al you saved my sanity.
Running times are around 10 mins flat out, but who runs flat out constantly, 15-20 mins general running,
the motor draws very little power, and times could be greatly improved by fitting the latest higher capacity nimh's.
The decks are Cherry planks with Ash caulking from Jotika, really good quality stuff, smooth as silk straight out of the bag,
i believe supplied to Marten Howes & Bayliss for their mega kits.
The finish is SP Systems model aircraft wing skinning expoxy, which is an absolute swine to use, I had to strip off my first attempt
and start all over again, the secret is to heat up the deck & expoxy, and recoat while the first coat is still tacky, avoids blooming.
Then it's hours of wetndrying with finer grades of paper, followed by TCutting & polishing, and if you are really lucky like me, painful Tennis Elbow.
The model was built purely as an experiment to test out the planking/finishing process for a future fully planked scale glossy Chris Craft build,
yes Swordsman looks pretty, but I am the first to admit it is in no-way shape or form the correct timber / finish or planking pattern.
The latter should be layed following the curve of the bulwark edges and joggled into a king plank on the foredeck all in oiled teak,
had to clarify that one before the 'rivet counting brigade' get their hobbyhorse saddled up!
Any other questions chaps please fire away,
also my inspiration has been 'Ramons' well written (unlike this) stunning build of the bigger Huntsman found on this website.
Regards Paul

Hi Question, for Stavros, why were there a pair of waders in the bin at Wickstead, could you not find the leak? Can I recycle them.
Best regards Jeremy
-
Waders were ther simply because the neoprene had got porus and once it gets like that it is a bin job and if you have taken them out of the bin well good luck to you as be warned they have had it

Straight running killed his waders-----be warned, we don't take prisoners, we'll get you one way or another ok2 ok2 ok2

Hi Martin, Great show and photos to prove it. It makes me even more disappointed that I was not there. I watched the slideshow on the homepage and think I saw saw a Deans Marine Pre Dreadnaught Battleship Majestic. Have you any more pictures of it as it looks fantastic and having finished the Mincio I am about to start the completion of one. It will be the biggest project I have undertaken to date so any advice from other builders would be appreciated. Cheers, Graham.

Few more here:

I have a more from a factory visit, let me know if you want them.

Thanks Stav, may come in useful for puncture repair kits. Captain Povey the Deans Marine Pre Dreadnaught Majestic class Battleship is a model of HMS Mars built by Victorian, he has posts on this site and will probably post some Wickstead pictures when he see's this comment, if can download them at less than 5mb from his new camera.

Hello Capt. Povey. Here's Mars, Pelorus and Amazon together at Wicksteed (Amazon built by Mark Hawkins).

I'll post some more pics and some thoughts on the Deans kit when I get a moment - main thing is to decide which ship you are modelling because the kit represents Hannibal, not Majestic or others which had important detail differences. I chose Mars because, so far as I know, there's no other model of her and I wanted a ship that was present at the Diamond Jubilee Review in July, 1897.
-
Thanks for your quick responses Martin, Jeremy and Victorian. I am planning to finish building the kit as HMS Caesar as I see from my Grandfathers naval record that he served on her in 1909. Finding good picture detail is difficult and I think I read somewhere that the main gun turrets were a different shape allowing for easier loading. It is going to be quite a challenge but if I get a result anywhere near as good as you have I will be more than happy. She looks great. Cheers Graham.

Capt Povey
The kit will be a good representation of Caesar due to the abaft the bridge foremast and main deck torpedo net shelves. I can't comment on the gun turrets. There are some photos of Caesar here (http://www.battleships-cruisers.co.uk/hms_caesar.htm).
The Hannibal kit is an excellent source of fittings, etches, etc.. I got on well with the fibreglass superstructure after reducing it to a scale height. It's vital to get a truly snug and square fit between superstructure and deck and spent hours over that. I found that the printed bridge structure was too tall and made it all from scratch, especially as I was building a ship with the foremast running through the bridge. I didn't use the cast metal davits for durability reasons. Ditto the torpedo net booms. The masts are brass in my model with new platforms, steps and so on.
I would never have built Mars without the Deans kit and it's a major tribute to Ron Dean that people can today see Victorian battlehips and other vessels on our lakes and ponds. The commonest question I get asked is "what nationality is it?" because the glorious Victorian Navy has faded from collective conciousness.
It's a pity you are going for 1909 in grey but if my grandad had been there then I would do the same! There are pictures of sister ship Victorious in white at Beirut and it would be worth checking at the PRO (who should have her log books) where Caesar actually was in 1909. Pelorus was still painted in Victorian colours in 1914.
Here's a couple more pics:

Look forward to seeing Caesar on the water!

Hi Paul
I also have recently purchased the MAP 33" Swordsman plan and absolutely love it! but theres no detail for the glazing & frames to retain the glazing, yours looks very neat (with no adhesive on the glazing like I usually do). so please let me know what you used?
-
Thanks Victorian for your extra photos (she does look brilliant) and detailed reply which I am slowly digesting. I will reply in more detail in a personal message if thats ok otherwise this thread might become a bit disjointed. Cheers Graham.

Hi Budlia,
Apologies for the late reply, have been away on hols this past week, re the glazing etc - I used 1/8th Liteply cabin sides, 1/8th perspex for the glass,
thin Plasticard (sprayed silver) for the window frames. System used was to flush fit the perspex into finished painted cabin sides, then glue the silver frames on top,
with the cabin to glass joint line running underneath the 3mm wide window frames. Hence no visible join, all glued with Revell Contacta plastic cement
in the nifty pack with the very fine (1mm approx) metal tube applicator spout. Trying to be as carefull as poss I managed to get glue on the glass !
The original Fairey windows we are trying to replicate would have been chromed held in place by hundreds of small screws at regular spaced (4 inch guessing) centres
all around the frames, must have been a nightmare to fit on the fullsize boat, again see Ramons very informative Huntsman build on this website.
Regards Paul

Hi Paul
Thanks for your reply, it really does look like a good method of fixing the window glazing, nothing complicated and very practical. I shall be adopting the same method. Well done shipmate!

You wouldn't believe the complexity of the economics of the trade off between advertising and editorial content. I found it a real eye opener. These magazines are run on a very tight budget. Rather them than me!
