Title: Richelieu / Jean Bart Battlecarrier
Post by: J.beazley on May 04, 2008, 12:56:25 pm
Heres one for you research boys especially DickyD (even you will find this one hard)

Im looking for any pictures / information regarding the withdrawn plans to turn Richelieu / Jean Bart into a battlecarrier post war.
Shipmate60 had a picture which has been filed somewhere really good and it did look something special.

Tricky one i know but im hopefull someone will come up trumps.

A bit of history to the project.
After the war (1945) the French Govt wanted to save money and convert the unfinished Jean Bart as a Battleship/Aircraft Carrier.
The foredeck with all the Main Armament was to stay the same.
Everything aft of the forecastle break as a Carrier.
There was uproar by the French public who changed the govt's mind and Jean Bart was completed.
The proposed conversion was a strange beast, but functional.

Hello there Jay,

You've probably found www.stratisc.org/pub_mo3_Querel.html which gives a lot of the background (in French) and refers to other publications.
Perhaps one of the French Forums (Forae?) could help. There seem to be a lot of them about.

As an alternative, perhaps, it seems that the Iowa was considered for conversion in the same way (See attached)

Been browsing some french sites but cant read any of it so ive been clicking in hope to find something of use.

Well i think ive come onto a winner with the "standard" Richelieu at 1/100th scale.
http://gemo27.chez-alice.fr/richelieu.htm

Will keep clicking in hope of more findings.

Cheers

I'm quite surprised at some of these projects. Any flight deck would not have been long enough to operate wheeled planes and seaplanes had pretty well outlived their usefulness by the end of the war while choppers were still in their infancy as weapons systems. Of course the Japanese did actually convert two of their battleships, Ise and Hyuga for use in Pacific operations after the Battle of Midway but they were not really successful and are not believed to have used their planes operationally.
