Hi all,
Do we have any experts out there into Digi cameras please.
I bought a 2GB memory card today, but the spec on my camera says up to 512MB guaranteed. So I assume 2GB is approx four times the capacity. In my ignorance, I thought that it was just a passive storage device, that will store data until full.
So my question is what happens if I use the 2GB card in my camera. (perhaps magic smoke)

Hi Bob,
It looks as though your camera has a built-in memory of 512MB and, without a memory card installed, it will record to this memory. As soon as you instal the 2GB card all of your photos will be recorded to the card and not the internal memory. You will then be in a situation where you can transfer the pictures from camera to PC or, if your PC has the necessary connection slots, you could take the card out of the camera and transfer the pictures from the card. The card is also used at the various shops that do digital printing. O0

I once bought memory for my sons computer that was too big for the operating system to deal with. All that happened was that the computer refused to work. When I took it out all was OK. Adding memory that the machine could deal with was successful.
I would think a camera would operate in the same or similar way.I would not think that adding the card would cause problems, the worst would probably be the camera refusing to work with it fitted or maybe not recognising the storage memory above 512MB. However, if you're unsure I'd take the memory card back and ask or check the manufacturers website and FAQ.

I have a Fuji F10 with a low memory card, so I updated to a 2Gb recently. The results were astonishing. It worked a treat and increased the 'Movie making time' to over half an hour, up from 4 minutes.
I agree with Derek. It should work.

Some of them will work and others will not. It WILL NOT do any damage to the camera to try. Pop it in and see. If it does not accept the bigger memory you will soon know, but no damage will ensue.....HONEST...

Fuji and Olympus use Xd cards the others just the standard SD or Media.

I use a Fuji s9500 which uses both xd and Compact flash , the instructions say that it will handle anything upto 2gb no problems after that I would have to upload a software addition which might work but might not have all the facilities.
All I would say is that most cameras are probably fine upto 2gb but check before going any higher..
I have more problems working out what half the buttons do on mine.

I now limit my camera to a 1 gig card (SD) although it will handle the 2 gig I found it took so long to read the card when transferring it drove me nuts.
So I now use the three 2 gig cards as data storage for the laptop
R, ps camera's are Kodak 1 idiot proof and one you need a degree just to switch on, but I like them.

I use a Kodak with 2 gb card and have no problemo, thank god for this memory because my memory is shot. No wait, isn't the male term for that select memory recall {-).

Our Fuji A210 uses an XD card only 16meg though.

When I was looking to buy a new camera I was given advice in the Forum about needing a view finder, I ignored it! I went for a compact camera with a large LCD....useless on a bright day. I can see absolutely nothing on the screen, as large as it is, on a sunny day.
Any remedies?

My camera is only a cheap Samsung A6.
The specs say Int mem (storage) 32mb flash memory
Ext mem SD Card/MMC (Up to 512MB guaranteed)
I actually bought two of these cards, one being for my wife's camera. I'll try that in mine, and if it causes problems I can take the un opened one back. Or at six pounds, I could always keep both, and then she can take approx 5272 snaps next time we are out and about.

Re the problems with your LCD screen. A firm called fotospeed do a thing called 'Digishield' which is a folding screen that fits over the camera's LCD screen. Go to www.fotospeed.com and click on 'Digital Equipment' and you will find it at the bottom of that page. A friend of mine uses one and swears by it and I saw the advert in the May issue of 'Which Digital Camera' magazine O0

I didn't see Martin's posting about the LCD screen hood but that one looks as though it is probably the same as the one I mentioned and about a fiver cheaper. :embarrassed:

Me again - I've just seen the postal charge on the eBay item and I think that it is extortionate as the hood is, obviously, light and quite small when folded. >:(

I've had enough trouble trying to understand all the buttons on this one. It's taken me two years, and I still don't know how to use half of the functions.
But otherwise not a bad idea.

Didn't they use a hood to hide the photographer back in the elder days? Something about not frightening the ladies and horses and not giving the servants and tradespeople ideas above their station?
If the camera recognises the memory for what it is, all should be OK, if not the chances of breaking the camera are remote.
