Title: 2 or 3 wire? (Brushless Motors)
Post by: fuelman8 on August 21, 2008, 10:31:14 am
What is the difference between a 2 and 3 wire motor? :embarrassed:

Will they both reverse?

Hi fuelman8,
2 wire motor, brushed motor, will run direct off battery, reversable by reversing wires  or by Fwd Rev ESC
3 wire motor, brushless, must use brushless ESC to run, can be reversed by esc or swapping 2 of the 3 wires if a fwd only esc.
Anything else you need to know?
Regards
Nick

Simple question (s)

Simple answer:
2 wire motor is a Brushed DC motor - reverses simply by reversing the polarity of the 2 wires.
2 wire motors will (generally) run if connected directly to a battery
If you were driving it by an Electrionic Speed Control (ESC) this would generally do the reversing for you (boat and many car brushed controllers have reverse built in)

3 wire motor is almost certainly (if the wires are all the same sizes) a Brushless motor.  This is actually an AC motor and therefore NEEDS a Brushless Speed Controller to run at all. (Do not connect to a battery directly!)
Reversing Brushless speed controls are available, but not yet common.
All (3-wire) brushless motors can be reversed by changing any two of the wires (I do this with a switch and a 3rd channel since I have a forward-only brushless ESC)

This is rather simplicated - hope it answers your question

Thanks Andrew & Nick O0

I had seen some 3 wire motors and they didn't state if they were brushed or brushless.

The Tamiya 540 motors I,ve looked at are 7.2 volts, will they run on 6 Volts?

They'll be absolutely fine on 6v  O0

http://www.teamnovak.com/products/price/index.html#brushless%20systems (http://www.teamnovak.com/products/price/index.html#brushless%20systems)

Just to back up Andrewh's point about reversing brushlesses, not common, and therefore very expensive.

No problem they are not that dear, these work well. have a look for lifeboat Paul's boat fly with them, and they only take between 5 to 7 days to get hear.and they do a kit for about £2 to watercool them now

Those or the Pulso ones or these, Hobbycity do a watercooled 60 amp one for $56.99 US and have an 18 amp for $35(not watercooled)
http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=7360&Product_Name=Turnigy_Marine_60A_Brushless_Boat_ESC
limited to 12 volt, wont work for the lifeboat.

Does anyone have a site that sells motor, gearbox and drive combos? I found one but can't find it again.

For me just starting with electric boats is this a better way to go.

They are very few "qualified" brushless motor suppliers for model boaters, you're pretty much on your own choosing a motor, gearbox (if required), propeller, speed controller set up. Many supplier will sell you stuff but few have any real experience in this area.

Look at the site already listed on this thread.

Also found this:

Also do a search on Youtube. Quite a few videos on there and many provide information on their setups.

Martin

Thanks for the youtube info, i'll check it out. The different setups are what i'm looking for to compare.

Because the outer can turns and the front stays still.
