If you laugh at this, you can imagine the fun we had. We were all absolutely howling at them.

Had the designer of the Mk1 not reached the page about "metacentric height"?

Great fun O0 :D
Try filling the barrels with water 1/2 - 2/3 full first, then attach logs to help prevent rolling.
Maybe then try 4 barrels in a square and use logs to make a deck.
Might help, but what would I know. {-) {-) {-)

Reminds me of a time that I went on a corporate Improve Your Team sort-of-course near Windermere. The morning was archery - the best archery won points to buy bits (rope, barrels, spars) to make a raft in the afternoon, for the obligatory raft-race.
The thing is, I'd twenty years of Medieval re-enactment under my belt, and so, after lunch and a more-than-satisfying morning "at the butts", my team's bit of the beach looked like Harland & Wolf, surrounded by other teams "one barrel" or "six feet of rope". ::)
How we laughed. But it was ok - after we'd made HMS Unsinkable, we bartered them the excess parts we had for beer.

Great stuff, more than just one barrel of laughs there!

Reminds me of many corporate "Team building" events!
Why do people always put the barrels "line astern" fashion. I swear they do it just to get me in the drink!

Most enjoyable :D but watch the joy stop when the 'elf and safety spot it... :'(

Several years ago I saw some round tablers practicing for a raft race at "my" pond - large blocks of expanded polystyrene with a bath on top. They managed to board a crew, but had a heck of a time when it came to disembarking. Eventually the park patrol came over looking very official. He offered them a bar of soap.

That reminds me of a company team building day at Gilwell Park in Chingford, building rafts to cross the bomb hole. I was the only one in my team who could tie knots properly, good fun though {-) {-) {-)

That was the local sailing centre running it, we even stopped boating to watch O0
