hi there
Has anyone seen the advert for a new Channel 4 programme, where they are documenting the teenage childrens' embarrassment of their parents. Judging by the opening sequence - where one sees a teenage family who are looking 'down' at their father in disgust - because he is holding a Model Boat in his hands.
I wonder if this programme is going to try and depict all forms of modelling etc., as a form of weird geek thing - where we should all be locked up - got me annoyed - I am really looking forward to seeing this programme.
If they are trying to say that all of us modellers are a bit 'childish' and have yet to put away our 'toys' I think channel 4 are going to get a GOOD BLASTING. In all my years of modelling, I have only ever came across one person whose wife looked down upon him for model boating. She frowned upon him; because of his love of model boats and especially fishing boats......as her idea was since she came from a 'hardened' fishing family from Seahouses; his hobby should entail something with a little bit danger in. Pleased to say my wife or indeed any of my family do not & have never reacted like that because of my hobbies.
My late dad who was into boat building and fishing used to say to me - the smaller the scale the smaller the problems - stick with the model boats my Son O0 O0
Keep on Modelling - and let us see what this Channel 4 programme spews up. :P :-X

TV people like taking the mick out of things they don't understand. Anything for a quick laugh, ignoring the fact that to get kids interested in doing something creative and lasting instead of playing computer games must be a real benefit to their personal development.
-
HEAR, HEAR
-
My girlfriend thinks I'm a massive geek for making model boats, and aircraft and cars and railways. She also thinks I'm a geek because I used to code computer programs and because I like to play the occasional game myself. Oh and when I go fishing thats "sad" too.
However its perfectly ok, of course, for her to go on ruddy facebook.com for 12 hours a day sending her friends messages.
Know what? I really don't care! because my hobbies are "me" time, and whatever happens in me time is for me and nobody else.
I personally think that people who like premiership football have the wrong idea about how to get wound up over something and have a good time. But they probably disagree, doesn't matter because I have my hobby and they have theirs.
Can you just imagine if everyone in the world was a marine modeller? it would be entirely unoriginal and boring.... so lets hope they continue to see us as sad geeks and then they will leave us the hell alone.
Bring it on Channel 4 ;)
Alex
-
I started back into Marine modelling last year after surgery. I find it very relaxing and could careless about what others think. As there is not alot on the telly, considering we've got Sky, I figured I might as well do something creative. Television has lost all perspective with reality, when they have to create their own reality show, Society is a social construct and it is the individualism of 'sad' folks like us who put the word 'social' back into a correct context on our own terms.
As for footy, well I do enjoy the game, but as most professional sports, its gone the way of the absurd. But until they close up the local youth leagues, I'll support the sides and watch some of the millionaires earn their keep, stardom doesn't last long in sports. Hope they enjoy it. {-) {-)
-
My girlfriend thinks I'm a massive geek for making model boats, and aircraft and cars and railways
Thats strange, Mrs Toes has her own boat (Springer) and activly enjoys sailing it.. and competing in tug competitions!.
She also activly encourages me in building and comes up with ideas that i can add to the boats.
Also "Hear Hear" to Colin B's comment!..
-
Hi there All
Totally agree with the comments made - I wonder if any of the television companies have ever thought about making a Serious series about general modelling and it may surprise some folk - We on Mayhem belong to one, if not the oldest hobbies in the world - when they opened up some of the ancient tombs they found model boats. Long before the birth of Christ - makes ya think......eh....I wonder also if the General public realise that if it was not for models/model builders there would be very few of them going on an aeroplane, because as wel all know before a plane is built - there is a model built/several models built for wind tunnel testing; along with other models that are built of motor vehicles etc., to test them
So....take away the modelling experience and ...... the rest is history

With Channel 4 being famous for big brother and The Word, I doubt that will be very good watching!
-
There were a few modelling series that aired on Sky a few years ago but as they didn't stress mass hysteria they never really caught on. Doing something creative lacks the "excitement" of hearing something break, actually gaining a skill is something best avoided by the masses, or, at least, that is the perception of individuals within the masses, and this is stoked by the media.
Perhaps BB could be revived by dumping evictions and going for ritual disembowelling a chose contestant instead? Not that reviving it would be a good idea.
-
I am afraid we are still regarded as' big kids playing with toys' and are viewed with disdain by our 'betters. In the dumbed down society in which we live, there would appear to be more interest in programmes like' Big Brother' where apparently you can tune in and watch someone asleep in bed so we are unlikely to see tv companies turn to something which requires knowledge, skill, craftsmanship and technical abilities such as ours. The populus appears to be more interested in watching something break rather than being constructed as it is more dramatic and therefore makes for better viewing figures.
I once heard 'art' being defined as 'the creation of something for its own sake but with no practicle use'. Things such as paintings and sculptures definately fall into this category (unless they are hiding a hole in the wall or something) and are reveered and highly valued by all and sundry and indeed there have been countless tv programmes devoted to it. Our hobby generally could be regarded as having no practicle use and many boats, aircraft and the like which are not a true model of of any particular full size prototype would fall into the category of art, given the 'art' definition, so why are they not considered as such? Why aren't exquisite scale models, worthy of museum status also given a back seat in favour of so called art by the tv companies?
The truth is, the nation really has been dumbed down to the point where moronic behaviour and bad attitudes seems be more prevailant than education and skill. The tv world is more about 'look at me, see how fabulous I am', rather than 'look at my wonderful creation which required knowledge, skill, craftsmanship and devotion!! .. That just isn't 'good tv' in this day and age. So much of popular tv is purile rubbish and can only be regarded as shallowness in the extreme.
-
GRRRRRR!!!!!!!! not again,,,,,,,,,dont get me started >>:-( >>:-( >>:-( still if they are having a go at us , they are leaving the railway boys alone !!!!!.
i always feel that these numbnuts always ridicule something that they can't do themselves..
regards........bob
-
We got rid of our tv 5 years ago, it was the best move we ever made. We got so fed up with the endless drivel that was being put out by all the channels. My wife and I actually talk to each other now >>:-(, read books and there is also plenty of time to do something creative, like modelling :D. Of course we have been threatened/harrased endlessly by the tv license people, but that's another story... :-X.................Smudge
-
With reference to the above statement regarding the breakable society which tv emulates, the scholastic types refer to this as 'the McDonaldization of Society'. Spent good money at university to learn that, what a waste, any fool can see we live in a throw-away world, get a puppy at Christmas and when they walk him down to the park without getting proper shots and he gets sick, throw him away. What a world, as far as the model boat community not producing something worthy enough to be called Art, I would beg to differ, every month the magazines which cater to our hobby are full of Picassos and Monets, only going under the guise of all of us who hone the patience and skills to produce our vessels.
The phrase ignorance breeds contempt comes to mind, those who cannot do, critisize, and hence comes the breeding, we best be careful as this attitude of contempt is snowballing at a rate directly proportional to computer technology, which while we see this technology as a benefit, most abuse it for whatever they can achieve with doing as little as possible.
Right rant over, have to sort out the mess the dog made now, by the way, fully vaccinated and had his first walk in the park tonite. Bless O0

Hi Peeps,
I'm trying to relive my youth and desperately searching for some plans from a TV programme in the late 70's early 80's. If my memory serves me well it was called modelling or Model or Modellers world. It covered all sort of modelling subjects and came with a book that had 3 plans in it. The plan I'm looking for is a leander class frigate. I made one with my Dad and it was very simple and straight forward to build so I'm wanting to have a go at it with my son :-))
If any one can help we shall forever be in your debt :}
Mental Note To Self - NEVER throw anything away <:(

Right then you are in luck in one way but not in another just found the book in question But unfortuantly the one plan that you need is missing BUty all is not lost as look at what Uncle Stav has found for you happy bidding

It was at £6.50 the last time I looked. I was going to bid for it to do it with my son, But the missus says NO, can't blame here I've got a Trent on the go, just cut templates for a Fairmile D 1:32 last night, gathering materials for a 1:72 Leander (got the hull), 1:72 Type 42 stretched (got the hull and plans), half way through HMS Campletown 1:96. O0
Mark
EDIT- Happy bidding, may be if you win I can get a loan of them from you, or a copy?
-
I made one of those. Shortly before my "O" levels. Ummm...thirty years ago this year!
Andy
-
I built one of them as well, and very well it sailed too, considering it was a balsa box job. I connected the gun turret to the rudder servo for a bit of fun, and then spent more time scratch-building a tiny Wasp helicopter for the helideck. Looked a treat on Derby's Markeaton Park boating pool.
Then my daughter dropped it down the stairs one day and wrecked it totally. :(( {:-{
Such is model boating life. <:(

Had a look on Ebay Stav and it finally went for £25!!!!!!!!!! %%
So, Plan B, can you recomend some plans of a similar nature. I'm reasonably competent at making wooden models but I need it to be simple and straightforward and not too fidely so that my 7 year old boy can have a go at building it with me. I've been searching t'internet but its difficult to know how suitable the plans are. {:-{
I'd appreciate any suggestions,

Modesty ought to prevent me suggesting the "Paladin" plan, published in the Oct 05 issue of Model Boats and plan (MAG 2025) available through the "My Hobby Stores".
It was designed to make a simple and cheap entry model, perhaps idea for your Father/Son project?

hi there
have you had a look in the build Masterclass at the plan for beginners - although this isnt a warship plan - it is a very easy to build sports model.
Very few tools required; it is great project and I can envisage it being an excellent family build :-)) If you are interested FLJ who is a member of this forum will supply the plans for approx £5-6 plus postage :-))
Also, if you hit any snags in the build you know who to contact.
No doubt the same, if you pick one of Glynn's plans - that could be one of the plans chosen for a future build mmmm food for thought.
One last thing, I do wish the moderators would change the Masterclass heading - as I know it puts a lot of people off looking into that section of the Forum. I don't think any of us should be put under the title of Masters - we are all here to help one another and builders are what we is.

I made Paladin a couple or three years ago at the St Albans Model show. 90% complete in 2 8 hour days. Took it home painted it and took it done the lake two weeks later! Had a jr perkins 380 motor with a 30mm prop running on 6 volt 1.2amp battery. went like stink and was called a menace. Since then every time I put her on the water everyone vacates the lake!!!
I have had it 80% submerged while running parallel with a Happy Hunter, have taken out the main gun on flower class corvette, broadsided a small tug, been sunk twice by the Happy hunter with no damage to the boat.
The only damage that was done to the Paladin was when doing a small overhaul on the motor and I dropped it and smashed the whole of one sided, so she is now in dry dock being repaired, weighed down with a new bottom hull, side and a new johnson motor. (yes you saw it correctly!). Sea trials will begin soon!!!

BBC news on Staurday night showed a film clip of one of the 2 Iranian "warships" transitting the Suez Canal.
The clip showed the IRS "Kharg". A direct "copy" of an RFA "OL" class tanker....except the Kharg was built as a "One Stop" ship (the "Ols" were almost totally liquid re-fuellers). She has a double hangar and is more heavily armed than an RFA. She was also built to an extremely high standard.
When she was being built it was proposed to have her at the centre of the then Persian navy Logistics section with the shore back-up and facilities built along the lines of ours.....but things changed.
I've spent ages in the past searching the coastline of Iran trying to find her base port without any success. In a way, it's nice to see her still fulfilling her role....but although "armed" I wouldn't exactly describe her as a "warship"!

The sub is played by an ex USN boat the "Tilefish" a Balao Class. At the time of filming she was in service in the Venezuelan Navy as the "ARV Carite (S-11).

Still a stunner. The Kendal family were strolling players in India. See Shakespeare Wallah. Her sister Jennifer married Shashi Kapoor, one of the Bollywood greats, and was hugely popular in India.

Hi, anyone interested in scale sailing boats might like to try
www.classicyacht.tv
It is on line and has HD picture definition, so you watch from your PC etc. Currently has a good video of the Schooner Marriette with the first mate telling you about running the boat and some great film of the boat in action.
I think the content is changed monthly.

Those of you with access to the BBC IPlayer should check out this extraordinary BBC4 documentary which is a compilation of film coverage from Edwardian times until the latter part of the 20th Century loosely based on the British Coast. There is no commentary, just a haunting sound track from 'British Sea Power'. I found it absolutely fascinating, there are some wonderful shots of old time ships and the people who made and crewed them.

Hi, I reckon it is before the first world war and going into it, possibly a little after it as well. I can remember our fish quay looking like that. Nice quaint film of yesteryear. Nemesis

Yes, a lot of it is pre WW1 but it also takes in the cross channel hovercraft as well - although that seems quite a while ago now.

A truly great program, thanks for highlighting it Colin!
A film that highlights the unknown skill of the film editor.
Well done Alex Fry, a master of the unknown art.
Well done the BBC.... still "got it", despite the current crisis' ...
Some rich gems in there;
1. What type of boat is that at 3:50?
2. Oops... damn! 32:50
3. Fantastic cinematography at 40:00 (ride up the crane)
And almost best of all, no dumbed-down, idiot or inane commentary!
Thanks again Colin, I would have hated to have missed that! :-))
Storyville: Made from over 100 years of BFI archive footage, From the Sea to the Land Beyond offers a poetic meditation on Britain's unique coastline and the role it plays in our lives. With a soundtrack specially created by Brighton-based band British Sea Power, award-winning director Penny Woolcock's film offers moving testimony to our relationship to the coast - during wartime, on our holidays and as a hive of activity during the industrial age.

Just beautiful, a moving painting and a social history lesson choreographed to lovely music, on top of which are some cracking boats. The regatta scene with the top-hatted swimmers will stay with me always!
One thing it did show, just how flippin' quiet our coast is now! Shipping may be an expanding industry, but small boating and pleasure boats are diminishing at a much faster rate- and a damn shame too!
Nice that it ended with a shot from my home town too.
Did anyone else feel like they could have watched that for at least another hour? It barely skimmed over the surface of our coastal and maritime heritage, even in the last 100 years.
Thanks for the link Colin!

Channel 4, 20:00 - How the Bismarck Sank HMS Hood
-
It is repeated tonight on the extra channel. I have set the copier as I missed it first time. :-))
Ken
-
Hi Kenny
I too thought that the programme would be something worthwhile watching, but after 20 minutes I was rather annoyed that it concentrated too much on the crew of the deep sea recovery vessel than the HMS Hood and how she sank in three minutes. In my opinion it seemed that they rushed the programme and concentrated on other things like the ROV breaking down, then jumping to conclusions after only the one and only successful dive! The footage of the Hood recently discovered from 1939 is worth while watching however. Hope this has not dampened any spirits but in my personnel opinion the earlier program from 2001 which was funded by Channel 4 called Mighty Hood, Invincible Bismarck was a far superior documentary.
-
Thanks for the info.. I shall keep my finger on the fast forward button. :}
Ken
-
Just been watching this 'Hood' program. Strange, but I remember from decades ago that the explanation was a shell from Bismarck had detonated a magazine, so not sure what this really added.
Their (this programme's) belief it was a specific one below the captain's day room (IIRC) seemed tenuous to me. Having seen the explosion of HMS Barham (WOW!) I find it hard to believe there would have been anything at all left of that room and it would therefore have been a magazine further away that went pop.
Lot of assumptions about rudder positions and turns that seemed to be stretching things too.
Shame the weather stopped play though - it'd have been good to have gathered more evidence.
-
Well I watched it without my finger on the 'fast forward'. What an interesting film. :-))

No excuses for bumping this amazing film again.
I rarely watch anything twice but have now seen this over half a dozen times and am still knocked out by the combination of footage and the wonderful soundtrack. Can't you stick an indoor aerial in your telly and access freeview Rich.
It should be available everywhere the old system was receivable.
If you are in a block of flats you should have a terrestrial tv socket.
Unless the owners think you are better off with freeway.
Any cheapo indoor aerial should work on a modern flat screen.

Makes one wonder what the customers are worth, if they can spend that much on just one toy!!

Repeated 11pm 19th BBC4
-
That's the excellent Clyde Puffer programme.
Britains Biggest Superyachts is repeated at 2:35 on Thursday 28th April.
-
Did you hear the price they were asking for the model of the boat? I hope it had full bells and whistles for that amount.
-
Looked like a ship builders model , and they are DEAR , and with the real ship , just think the BIGGEST scratch built kit EVER O0 all hand laid fibreglass . . .
The 131 could cost them dear by offering bespoke design ? the decor tastes of rich people (in this case) are appalling , the marble bathroom was stunning & the owner wanted to change it %% AND you DEFINITELY don't want to hear RUNNING WATER on a ship with that 'waterfall' frame , the ship itself is a good design tho' hope it's a success for them.

The good Puffer programme is repeated tomorrow night(Tues) BBC 4 @11.00 pm

Stayed there in a 1st class room when we went visiting relatives, not quite what I expected but was ok..

Absolute opulence when she was built. O0
Jim.
-
Well Jim...obviously you are correct "Absolute opulence" :o...appears she even had flat TV screens back then..... %%........... Derek

We spent a night aboard back in 2001. Mrs B had to drag me off next morning.

I'd never noticed that one Derek, lol.

Don't get me wrong, staying on her was great, and the trip around the ship was really interesting, especially being able to see one of the props in the enclosed tank where the hull had been cut open. Disappointed the Spruce Goose was no longer there..
-
Also on tv this week so probably re-screened next week. A series of programs on the Atlantic and Pacific undersea warfare of ww2, being shown on Nat Geo channel (sky ch 526) I caught a glimpse of it (not my cup of tea) plenty of film footage, not just historians talking about how things went.
-
Last week was a 3 part series on the u boats at 3pm , only thing was it was padded out with the same things several times so not as good as it could have been. Also spruce goose was not the largest flying boat built - the princess was, built by Saunders Roe, that even flew a greater distance as well, not just across the bay.
-
Just intrigued by your comment that it was not what you expected Larry.
It's interesting to compare a 1930s first class stateroom with the standard cabin you get on today's cruise ships - much bigger and usually with a balcony. I bet using those bathtubs on QM was interesting given the propensity of the ship to roll.
I remember the (non functioning) tap controls in the bathroom too, one set for fresh water the other for salt, presumably pumped in from the Atlantic!
Colin
-
So TLB says......
"Don't get me wrong, staying on her was great, and the trip around the ship was really interesting"
I have read that one engine room had been removed, but did your tour include the remaining engine room?........in her day I believe it must have a mass of gleaming white lagged pipe work connected to an engine.........[but then a turbine is only a rectangular box with a shaft at the end {-)]

If you didn't see it on BBC 1 try and get it on i Player. Peter Pan Goes Wrong. Probably the funniest programme you will see over the Christmas period.
Colin
-
Funniest movie I watched was 'Spy' with Miranda Hart, Jude Law, Jason Statham and Melissa McCarthy. I laughed from beginning to end. I'm not usually endeared to profanity and this movie is littered with it, but it makes it all the funnier, a total parody of all the James Bond movies.
-
I'll go along with you Colin. It's been a long time since I laughed as much as watching that. Quite happily watch again just to pick up little asides I'd missed.
-
I watched the 'new' Dad's Army film on-line yesterday.... what a huge disappointment. >:-o
Same with the 'new' film, Absolutely Fabulous .... terrible. {:-{
-
I toured with the original cast back in the late 70's and what a great lot they were, wondered how a modern version would turn out.....saw it as well, and I agree.....yuk, misses all the things the original cast had >:-o

Sorry missed this, Probably expectations from too many films :} however Although we were 1st class I think we were in the smaller 1st class rooms .

The Poseidon Adventure (1972 film) - was on telly today.
Under 'ideal conditions', could an old style or even a modern ocean liner stay afloat upside down, even for a 'few' hours?
( Obviously, upside down is not ideal but you know what i mean! :P )

The Mutiny on Channel 4 looks worth watching. First showing is on Monday 6th March at 9pm (21:00). It's a five part series.
No doubt most of us will have seen Mutiny on the Bounty, but my thoughts are that the original voyage is best shown in the 1984 film, The Bounty.

I don't know if many of you watched last Saturday evening the penultimate episode of Peter Capaldi's Doctor Who but I thought it was one of the best finishes to a series for years with some very good twists and turns. I can't wait to see the Christmas episode with David Bradley, when I watched the docudrama about the beginning of Doctor Who for the 50th anniversary he was a spectacular actor for the role.
Hopefully the next actor who plays the Doctor will be worthy of picking up the sonic screwdriver and TARDIS key. :-))
-
Hmm, I thought it was a messy ending , Capaldi wasn't used properly thru the whole series , I was delighted when John Simm (the master) turned up , alas not much of an impact . . . they tried to tie up too many loose ends . . . .

Not sure what the 'mystery' is they are referring to, the Graf Spee story is pretty well documented. Still, it's a TV programme so there has to be a mystery.

BBC: Air an Smùid/Steaming - http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b06vft28
( Scottish Gaelic language - subtitles )
A team of puffer enthusiasts from Islay battle to save the VIC 27 - a 66-year-old vessel - from the scrap heap. On her rusty bow she bears the name Vital Spark - a throwback to her glory days as star of the BBC's 1994 series The Tales of Para Handy.
With no working engine, the team organise for the puffer to be taken under tow through the canal to Crinan, where her restoration begins. They look on nervously as she's carefully winched up the purpose built slipway. This is the first time in almost 30 years she's been out of the water, and at last the team can assess the condition of her hull.
Tha sgioba Ìlich a tha measail air pufairean a' strì gus seann tè mheirgeach bho àm a' chogaidh, a' VIC 27, a shàbhaladh mus tuit i às a chèile. Air a toiseach tha an t-ainm Vital Spark - bhon àm a bha i ainmeil air sreath sgeulachdan 'Para Handy' a rinn am BBC ann an 1994.

A repeat from a couple of years ago, a good set of programs and the subtitles were useful. They were very lucky as only the paint was keeping out the water in places. Still under restoration.

BBC: Empire of the Seas: How the Navy Forged the Modern World
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00q3l9k
Historian Dan Snow charts the defining role the Royal Navy played in Britain's struggle for modernity - a grand tale of the twists and turns which thrust the people of the British Isles into an indelible relationship with the sea and ships.
Heart of Oak opens with a dramatic retelling of 16th- and 17th-century history. Victory over the Armada proved a turning point in the nation's story as tiny, impoverished England was transformed into a seafaring nation, one whose future wealth and power lay on the oceans. The ruthless exploits of Elizabethan seafaring heroes like Francis Drake created a potent new sense of national identity that combined patriotism and Protestantism with private profiteering.
At sea and on land, Snow shows how the navy became an indispensable tool of state, weaving the stories of characters like Drake, God's republican warrior at sea Robert Blake, and Samuel Pepys, administrator par excellence, who laid the foundations for Britain's modern civil service.

some of these producers just don't do their homework or research...……..
the Tay rail bridge disaster of 1879 was the most disastrous...…..60 known dead, and an estimate of another 15 dead or missing in the Forth of Tay when the centre section of the main Edinburgh to Aberdeen line collapsed throwing the train into the river.
I wish these researchers would do their homework before sensationalising something that just isn't true...….
a disaster yes....….any such accident with any loss of life is a tragedy and disaster, but the story is misleading.
