Title: Competition - Best figures seen on a model boat.
Post by: Reade Models on September 06, 2008, 10:22:21 am
I would like to submit my entry to the cartoon competition.

The guy on the Starboard side looks OK, but the guy taking a leak off the bow looks a bit "iffy"  {-) {-)

Seriously though, do you guys fancy having a competition for the best figures on a model?  If the response is positive, I'll put up a prize of one of our new RC Model Workshop sound systems (Engine Sound, Amplifier and 4 Ohm speaker, value = £50.00).

Martin might be kind enough to make the rules and nominate a judge?

I think it's a cracking idea, Malc.

This is a subject that's gone around and around, with no definitive answer, as it's all down to personal choice. You look at a miniature person and instantly know whether it's right or wrong. What are the parameters?  What exactly is not quite right?  Can it be altered, just that little tweak to get it right.

Take my example of the one penny figures from China. It's all down the wrong colours and  sizes of the people's heads. (my opinion!)

Good subject for a thread of it's own, Martin.

OK - I've PM'd Martin asking him to set up a competition.

My sincere apologies for the way your thread has been accidentally hijacked. I have asked Martin to arrange to have it cleaned up and a new thread started.

My best regards, Malc

Not mine but one of the best characters I've seen on a steam model.

Just in case Bernhard doesn't enter I'll do it for him.

Well hello sailor!  {-) {-) {-)

I still haven't got a clue what the competition rules are, how long it runs for, or who's judging, but please submit your entries below.  We'll sort out the details as we go along.

The prize, as stated earlier, is a RC Model Workshop sound system, comprising engine sound unit, amplifier and 4 Ohm loudspeaker.

Best of luck.

I think it should be something along the lines of:

1) You must have assembled the figures yourself

2) You must have painted the figures yourself.

3) The figure must be fitted to a working or static model boat.

4) You can only submit your own work.

5) You can submit up to three entries of either a group or an individual figure.

We could collect entries up to a certain date then have a vote.

Just some groundwork.

Anyway here are two entries from me.  One is the u-boat bridge crew in 1/72nd and the other is the Ben Ain Captain in 1/35th:

One or two real characters in that lot.  Keep them coming!

I'm not having anything to do with the rules for this competition, that's up to Martin, but I would like to think that 'character' of the figure may influence the judge - whoever that may be?

the colours and tones on the skin of your little fellas is so lifelike and realistic.
could you share with us please what brand paints you use and exactly what colours you use.
it puts me off adding figures to my models as i just have no ideas about which to use.

Yes, choice of colour is important, especially for figures. This includes skin and clothes.
One thing I do is use a dirty paintbrush  :o for all painting. Nothing on a working boat or a member of crew is of uniform color. Unless it is a yacht or the pristine whites of a the Navy. Even our skin is not uniform in colour.

Reminds me of a Billy Connely gag about skin colour. Along the lines of
'Why do they say my skin is white? Look [he says pointing to the skin under his arm] its blue! That's my natural colour.'

Hi Guys.

In response to a couple of questions re my PBR crew.

Tiger tiger

The men are all resin kit figures that come in about a dozen pieces that you have to sand all the moulding flashing off and then file to assemble to give a correctly fitting finish, ie forearms to shoulder to upper body etc etc Then you have to do the same with the various pieces of military hardware ie pouches, bandelers, torches grenades, knife, sidearm etc. ( se Pic ).

There is a company In Seoul Korea called SOL that manufactures some of this type of military figures and also Verlinden from Holland but be warned they are expensive, you will be looking about £30.00 a man, then some of the Weaponry is extra like .50 cal, and .30 cal machine guns etc

Nhp651,

That question is quite difficult to answer as it all depends on who or what you are painting, but in my Vietnam crew I used a combination of makes of paint to get the correct colours the uniform is pretty standard US Marine Corps Green, don't know if this is still available in that colour but I got a few tins to last me anyhow.

When that was dry I then drybrushed some mud coloured paint that I mixed up to give them that just back off patrol look checked with the pics I have of the era
( the mud was a sort of reddy brown colour and covered everthing )

The weaponry was a matt black that was then drybrushed with a metalic colour that just highlights the edges of the metal where it would have worn with human contact etc.

Now the hard bit...

I use Oil paints for the human body parts, you can buy a set faily cheeply if you shop about or you can just get a few tubes of the main colours from an art supplyer, the colours I use are Burnt Sienna, Burnt Umber, yellow Ochre and Zinc Titanium White

you will have to experiment with the colours and amounts to get it just right but if you dont you can overpaint and mix on the body use some oil thinners in the mix to help it flow and stop it getting " claggy ". When dry varnished over with a matt spray laquer.

Hope its of some use to you

Regards SUb

The hands and face modelled on the features of my father and father in law are made separately then added to the body.

Hi all this is my first post, so please be gentle with me, here are the crew of my perkasa. the captain is a converted caldercraft figure, the rest converted airfix multipose figures. the captain was converted to represent my late father with whom i built this boat some 20 + years ago, it has recently had a refit which is when the crew took up  battle stations. this is my first foray into boating having been flying aircraft up to now.

Hello All

This is my first posting as an ardent Mayhem Fan so please excuse any major cock ups.
For a start I've just spent the past two hours trying to post a couple of pictures which may, or may not, attach.

The pictures are of the helmsman I made for my Kingston Mouldings Yacht Tender.
The model is 1/10th scale so a standard figure was pretty hard to come by.
I decided to do a bit of moulding with FIMO clay to produce cap , hands, head and boots
The figure was based on a Casey Jones Railroad character I saw in a gift shop some years ago but many folk reckon its a caricature of me and they could be right.

After making and painting the clay parts I set to on stitching the body and boiler suit together and ended up with this happy chap- a little cartoony (note only three fingers and a thumb on each hand) but he adds character and raises a few titters every Sunday morning with fellow boaters and the public.
His right arm moves with the tiller and I've been asked if i could get his left arm to wave - something to ponder over during the winter months. It really surprises me how many folk, kids and more so adults give him a wave as he cruises past.

Anyway I hope he brings a smile to all on Mayhem- thats if the pics turn out OK!

regards
Terry H

Hi,

Just thought I'd enter the cpmpetition and post a few pictures of my figures on the lifeboat Duke of Northumberland, the first steam propelled lifeboat of 1889.

The model represents the lifeboat as she was during February 1908 at the service to the SS Harold off Holyhead in a force 12 northwesterly hurricane. A Gold medal medal was awarded to the Coxn and a Silver medal to each of the ten other crew. Attached is a picture of William Owen the Coxn. The figure at the helm I have tried to make to look lile him. The figures were made from very heavily modified Tamiya F1 drivers and pit crew, sadly been out of production a long time. Milliput was used to adjust arms, sizes, beards etc. Fine calico impregnated in place with superglue was used fror the oilskins and all painted with Humbrol enamels. The lifejackets are made from cork as the original.

I hope they prove of interest.

Title: Re: Competition - Best figures seen on a model boat.

Hi nhp651,

The Duke of Northumberland has been built to what I consider the "standard" scale of lifeboats i.e. 1" to 1'0" or 1:12. It was scratch built a few years ago and was the result of 2,500 hours of work spread over 3 years .

The propulsion is as the original i.e "hydraulic" or "water jet" as they call it now. To get the model working took over 500 hours. Many people do not realise there is no propeller until it is pointed out. She handles very much like a twin screw boat.

Thanks for the interest.

Les

thanks for the info Les.
I tried myself about 20 years ago to build a model of her.
I had some very old original blueprints of the boat plans and the hydraulic mechanism for the boat that I found in my grand dads old belongings years before. He had worked as a pattern maker on the castings for the pumps in his young professional life when he worked for the company who was "subcontracted" to build the pumps for the builders.( he died in 1965 aged 90)
I got round to building a plug, and moulds for the boat at 1:12 scale and a "friend" took a moulding for the boat from my moulds but it was like something that would more have been akin to suit a real boat it was so thick and heavy.
I then toyed around with different types of mechanism to power pumps including a chain saw motor but never got it right and lost heart..Seeing that I had lost heart my so called friend dumped the plugs, moulds AND the plans that I had left with him for safe keeping............and there ended the development of my attempt.

I would love to see your boat and the interior as oneday I would like to try again.
Do you still have plans yourself for her , and what was/is she made from.....I envy you for your tenacity and dogged determination at getting a unique project to fruition.......something I failed to do .............my old grandad would have been proud of me.

WE HAVE A COMPETITION WINNER:

Some excellent entries, well done all those Members who entered.

I have decided to declare the winner to be "Les" for his model of Coxn. William Owen  as shown in his post above (Reply #53, on 24 Sept. '08).

I have sent "Les" a PM advising him of the details of the prize generously donated by Reade Models.

Well done "Les" and thanks to Malcolm Reade for the prize.

I will not lock the thread because there may still be Members willing to post pictures of their figures and tips on making them. However, the competition is now closed.

Roger in France.

A worthy winner there Roger congratulations to Les.

It would be nice to see this thread continue though as there have been some superb figures already and I'm sure there are many more inspirations out there.

I missed all of the excitement! I have been working away for a couple of days - at the BP Oil Terminal at Hamble out in Southampton Water on the loading Jetty.  I managed to get some good pictures of a very large container ship putting to sea which I will post later.

Congratulations to Les for winning the competition, a very worthy winner.  If Les would kindly PM me, I will organise his prize and arrange for it to be posted off to him.
