Hi & greetings from Nordic!
Here is our new project, for me it is first scratch-built also,
scale model of of new Finnish Frontier Guard patrol boat,
PV06E, or commercially now named Watercat 1300 Patrol.
It is scale 1:10, length 146cm, construction is conventional plywood,
fiberglassed surface.
We have 2 of them under construction,Olli is working on nr 1 wich is equipped with CY 26ccm gasoline
single jet-drive, mine is having twin outrunner 10-pole Flyware motors.
Both of them are having 40mm Kehrer Power Jet propulsions
Best regards,
Hannu

Hi Hannu, nice looking boats, can you tell me please, where can I obtain the plans for this boat.
O0 Thanks Bob
-
Wonderful models Hannu, please keep us updated on the build.
( They look a bit like the Strathclyde Police Boat )

Thanks, fellows!
Well, in matter of drawings, sorry, they dont exist yet, building is based on pdf file of PV06E Watercat -prototype, Napa - ship design software lay-outs and bunch of
fotos taken from Coast Guard station at Nauvo, Finland.
Ofcourse those files are available
Yeap, it looks a bit similar than Clyde police,PV06E is Twin waterjet equipped with 2 x Scania Di12 66M, 478kW, achieving +40KTS speed.
Jets are Rolls Royce FF 375
Hull design is following a lot to Marine Alutech´s earlier products of Pilot & SAR boats, this is new Finnish Coast Guard patrol boat,
there is 13 of these ordered and under construction now.

Hello,
Here few pics of brushless outrunner motors. Only way to make cooling for outrunner is to watercool motormount, its 360 deg water circulated,
as well as ESC´s ( both motor & ESC are in same circuit, it looks to be enough at least for now)
Motors are from Flyware, type T-REX40-500kv 10-pole outrunners, max amp rate apprx 100/130A at 56volts, weight is 900grams
ESC´s I have used are either watercooled Schulze 160WK or Sentilon 100A 12S (marinated flight esc).
BR,
Hannu

those are some big powerful motors! I hope you can get some video footage of the finished boat for us O0

Hi, Proteus
Here is link to Kehrer jets
http://www.jet-drive.de/cms/component/option,com_virtuemart/page,shop.browse/category_id,11/Itemid,17/
This Power-Jet 40 is only one from Kehrer´s products, wich can handle higher power levels, EP is running now around 13.000rpm,
as top limit for jet is said to be apprx 15.000rpm
For a single-jet gasoline version jet end tunnel tube and reverse bucket is already modified, I still have original Castoldi ones,
but in next weeks we will make new test pices for end tunnel and reverse buckets, as Watercat uses RollsRoyce FFjets, wich are
totally different from Kehrer´s, so a lot of scale mods must be done. Hopefully we could also get with modifications a bit more efficiency out from jets

Hi Hannu,
I'm working my way through the same sort of boat at 1/12 scale and am experimenting with home made 375S drives using plumbing fittings for the main rotor housing and inlet. The nozzle etc. is from electroformed copper to approx 1mm thick and the steering nozle will be the same.
My main problem is the reversing bucket which does not seem to fit any of the KaMeWa patterns.
I've attached a photo of the real one for information and, hopefully, ideas on what the bottom of the bucket looks like?
I've also attached photos of the project sofar.
Good Luck

Hello, & greetings from Pickala pond, had a great time today with 2 watercats, Olli´s gasoline powered was showing after keel modification

Hello! I'm gonna take a new direction in this project, here is one pic of the 3D-model I made of this boat. This time it's accurate. Next the model is transferred to IGES-format and that is used for machining. We are planning to machine this form from bluefoam, and cover it with fiber glass. This way the boat is becoming very light, strong and accurate. Looking forward to see what happens. I might be the first person in the world who has done model tests for a ship model! {-) (I mean with my previous 'rehearsal' PV) :-)
-
UUh,
I will stay and continue "early bird" version, I definately wont take a new track on 3D milled version, its been too much job already done.
But, yes I do know, by 3D milling+ glassfibre, it could be a better one piece. Anyway, I am more than happy about its accuracy etc for now, also its been easier with electric one in matter of vibration caused troubles to hull etc, so I ll go with original plan, lets see what we get it finally, traditional or 3D to be better one?? <*<
BR,
Hannu
-
Hi Hannu,
What sort of machine are you using to cut out the foam, Im slowly building a machine to do it.
Nick
-
this sounds interesting......... I know you can buy 3d printers which you can hook up to solidworks and they will machine whatever is on your screen but these things are seriously expensive.
-
Helou,
Well, actually 3D milling machine is not mine, it is neighbours rc jet guy, who makes his own jet´s molding plugs.
It is home-made machine, I think new similar one could cost a lot, but this is made of using mainly "junk yard" parts.
Attached photos show my MTB Taisto 1:12 project launch made by that system, first "proof pce" in smaller 1:35 scale size
BR,
Hannu
-
im really impressed! I'd love to hear how one goes about making their own milling machine :}
-
there are plans to build them they are cheaper by the day , a couple of hundred would get you set up if you have a pc and are prepaired to do some woodwork.

I wish we had parts like that in our junkyard :o
Mines mostly MDF and stainless polished tube as the linear guides, at the moment I only have the X axis 90 % done.
I cant find that blue foam either although work has urethane foam.
Nick
-
Is there anywhere in the uk which sells CNC machine plans?
-
Quite a few free ones available on the cnczone site :-))
Mines a mish mash of a couple of the free designs utilising what I can obtain from work and local hardware etc

Hi,
well, hope that Watercat`s new modification is even more faster and more agile than Stridsbåt ;)
I am now awating new proto pieces of outer tunnel parts of jet for testing. Hope those will be completed before ice is coming

Hello guys!
Gasoline PV is finally silent! I got a new muffler from a senior finnish modeler, the muffler is a metal canister, inside there are several walls with holes which the exhaust gases has to pass. During this the sound becomes significantly smaller. Now it's possible to continue the project as this subject is out of the calendar. The boat in general is very agile, fun and easy to drive.
Best Regards, Olli
-
Howdy,
Have you tried to feed water into muffler, it could do it even more silent mover?
-
Hi,
Long time not much progress on Watercat, but now I have cutted off original kehrer-jet
end, new tubes are now 32m diameter. This evening also new more scale-like turning tubes where laminated.Lets see how they work..
BR,
Hannu
-
Hello everyone!
Lot of time has passed since my last visit to this topic, but I really have
not sat still with my finger in my ass. So a little update what's going on.
I'm still doing this same project, well at least somehow. The basic concept is
the same, but the exact boat which I'm building a model of, has changed. The current
boat looks like this:
http://www.marinealutech.com/kuvat/1500-3.jpg
For now, I have modelled the hull with 3D-program and done it and the superstructure
of foam. I have also covered the hull with fiberglass, and taken the foam away. So,
now I have a fiberglass hull.
Last week I installed the waterjets (there's two of them), and on this week I have
done the engine mounting platform and stiffeners inside the hull. Tomorrow
starts the axle and gearbox installing, after that first test drive isn't so far.
You can find pictures from different stages of building process from link below:
http://www.pixbox.fi/alb_show_id979946_page0.html
Last some specs of the model when it's ready:
Length: 1,65 meters
Breadth: 0,44 meters
Weight: 19,8 kg
Engine: CY 26 cc, gas
Propulsion: 2 * Kehrer Powerjet 40 mm
Gear: MHZ Jet Gearbox
Other: Self-righting if capsized in heavy weather,
all lights working, rotating radar antenna.
Since the boat has two waterjets, it is possible to stand still, reverse,
rotate around it's own vertical axle, do crash stops and go directly sideways.
And all this with one gas engine.
-
Hello,
Finally outer turning nozzless made, this weekened they should be ready for testing :-)
Br,
Hannu
-
Looking good Hannu, what angle do they turn through?
How are you going to change the reversing buckets?
Tony
-
Hi,
Steering nozzle radio installation completed yesterday, I think turning angle is closer 30 deg. Reversing bucket stuff is next job,
I have foam originals ready, so next 2 evenings job is laminating those buckets.
Attached few photos from weekend, Olli´s SAR - version of Watercat, called Kotka ( Eagle) , glassfibre cabin starts to get form
BR,
Hannu
-
The cabin is now reinforced inside with glassfiber, I also repaired few things which were wrong in the shape of the cabin. Yesterday I made jet nozzles and steering nozzles, so also here only reversing buckets are still missing. I also started to finish hull surface. When hull and cabin are sanded, I start to install technical stuff, and then it's time to go for a test drive, jes. %%

-
I almost got the boat drive-ready yesterday, still some radio-installation needs to be done.
-
Hello,
here is last week video from SAR Training center, it was just great there.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jhY3buUjbI8&feature=channel
My EP- Watercat gps was showing 37km/h speed, so it was not as fast as before, but I think it was due to fact, that new keel
is disturbing somehow flow to impellers, so I have now planed off part of keel away, like in real one pce.
BR,
Hannu
-
It will be nice to see how that affects. Watercat 1500 Rescue on the other hand is finally ready for a test drive!
-
First test drive on 1500 succesfull, receiver burned but that's minor thing.. Boat feels great.
-

-
ooooopppppppssssss. did you go in after it {-)
-
Yes I did, the water depth was four meters and luckily the water was so bright that I saw the cabin in the bottom of the lake. We used a long rod and a hook, it really was close that I would have lost the cabin! Maybe 50-100 hours would have been wasted... But I got it up :police:
-
Watercat 1500 is now painted, we have large model expo here in finland next weekend so it's ready for that.

Did you not start with electric? why did you change it?
When this thing sails it's going to break the sound barrier. O0
Mark
-
No, the other guy, Hannu is doing the electric version. I have done the gasoline version all the time. It's not so fast as racing-gasoline boats, it goes just right speed in scale. That was the meaning also.

Hi Nice boat , just started playing with water jets, have you played with impeller design at all, I was going to have a go in that area first using a basic motor set up so I can see if any improvements have been made, before moving on to faster motors,
also what have you used on your decks ,, looks good.
peter
-
another question if you don't mind , when you covered the Foam hull in glass cloth was that finished hull or was that then used as a mould, and if it was the finished hull how did you get the foam out ?
Peter
-
No, I have not changed impellers as I'm not confident to gain any pros.. Deck is same glass fibre piece with hull, there is sand and paint on top of it. The covered hull was the finished one, I removed the foam with knives, hands and hammer.
-
thanks for that

Hello,
Today we had a long and intensive spring maintenance day together, Olli has changed powerplant in his Watercat 1500 SAR Kotka to electric one from CY26 gasoline,
new is Dualsky XM63 series outrunner, kv 305, with Dualsky 90A 2-12s esc.
Old gasoline motor gearbox is still in use in electric setup.
We get info, that there is some open water in closeby pond, finally, so
tomorrow is first test run,
My PV260 Watercat 1300 buckets are now trimmed and working, testing it also tomorrow.
Hope there is enough large open water area, I´ll be running with 2 X 10S lipo set-up, it is truly interesting how all these jet modifications are working
BR,
Hannu

Hello,
Today we had a fantastic weather, and some open water also!
We get both Watercats running, Olli´s first electric trial after gasoline conversion was complete success!

Hello,
Well, back to the finetuning of Watercat 1300, now speed test made, according to gps it showed 38,7 km/h // 21KTS top speed.
Not that fast as I was expecting, but little bit more than with old keel configuration.
Also, balance point was a bit too much on front, but in high speed it was slightly still too much nose up, so next tuning is to mount
movable trim plates

Watercat project has been slow moving, just found one quite nice video of its journey.
Last summer it got new batteries, 2 packs of 10.000 mah lipos. Gives a bit over 4.2 hp power, 21 knots gps measured
Hope this winter it finally gets some details on it..
