I am now on the way to finishing my first model and SWMBO seems impressed and wants to put it on display -
I have given no thought about cases until I checked the web today and realised some of them cost more than
I had spent on the build process. Do you more experienced modellers build your own or do you have a reasonably
priced source of supply. I think I am capable of building my own if I can get the materials.
Any suggestions as to supply or obtaining Materials would be gratefully received.

fish tanks make good cases

For my models I usually construct a travel box with a perspex front.
For home display 2 shelves on the wall with perspex/glass sides allow the model to be seen and removed for sailing.
On the underside of the top shelf you can install some discreet lighting too.
Your wife then gets to display the model and gets s shelf for herself.

I read somewhere else that if you can get polycarbonate sheet it is more scratch resistant, and still lighter than glass.
For smaller models, and permanent display cases, some people prefer glass as it is scratch resistant.
You can buy a lot of wooden mouldings from a good hardware store. This can be used for framing.
-
Best to make one. Your local glazier might be able to supply the material and cut to size. Then glue it together.

I bought a case from this company. It is superb. They will make it to your specificstion, eithrt finishing it or leaving it for you to complete. They provide a great service at a very reasonable cost. Give them a ring. They are very friendly and helpful

Thanks for all your advice. I considered the DIY route but chickened out - means I will get onto the
the next project much quicker.
I rang COL after looking at their website and was duly impressed. The prices also seemed very reasonable
compared with other manufacturers. My order went in today. For info I was quoted £210 (includes P & P)
for a case with internal dimensions 51" x 18" X 8" - I was Quoted over £500 for the same on another site.

It does make sense to order a case. While you could do it yourself, it isn't something you do very often and will therefore take a disproportionate amount of time inless you have cabinet making skills. The commercial sellers are doing it all the time, have the necessary jigs and are likely to achieve a neater result.

I sent you the photos a couple of years back but you have obviously been too busy to put them on!!

Just to finish off this topic - my display case arrived today - Dave at COL quoted 8 weeks and it was 8 weeks to the day.
The quality is great and the price was excellent - spent the day erecting it and putting in my first model - I would add a picture
but I havent worked out how to submit them yet.

If you have a small model, could be diecast or larger - a very inexpensive 'case'.
Ply base, two ply curved ends, (thin ellipse cut in half) glue/pin the ends to base,
staple a piece of clear PVC sheet to the front, roll over the curved ends,
and staple to the rear. Cover the staples/ base with a small veneer strip.

I can endorse the comments about the display cases from Col-Uk. Their products are made to a very good standard, the service from Dave is first class and the price is the best you can find.
I speak as a satisfied customer as you will see from the photos of my "H.M.S.Agamemnon" from the Caldercraft kit.

I'm sure all you talented model makers could make your own display cases for a fraction of cost, I make mine from acrylic sheet, lighter, cheaper and safer than glass
-
that's a very nice case, patternmaker.
Do you route the rebate in the timber or do you make the "L" shape lengths in two sections and add a beading for the acrylic later.?
Is that brazillian mahogany you use or a softer timber stained.
I used mahogany on the last one I made but it always seamed somewhat "heavy" and so have bought a table router.
But brazilian Mahogany had gone up in price from 54p an inch square foot to 83p same recently and is very expensive when making big cases.
Almost as dear as having cases made if you include cost of acrylic and postage.
Neil.

Neil, the frame is rebated with 3mm router and mitred at the corners, the mahogany is sapele from a discarded window frame which I salvaged from a skip it was also used to build the plank on frame working steam launch.

cheers, it looks a much "lighter" frame....sems to work well. neil. :-))
