Title: Hi - I'm new here.
Post by: ddolfelin on January 21, 2009, 11:51:54 am
Just to introduce myself.
My main interest is the background scenery and dioramas which bring models to life.
I have some pictures of my efforts if anyone is interested (and I can find out how to post them!).
Not many boat related, unless populating a harbour wall or something.
My preferred scale is 4mm = 1 foot.
Probably mainly model railway based but certainly 'static' boats can be considerably enhanced by an interesting setting.
As I expect most people do, I built a wooden Victory a couple of years ago, kit based, but BIG!
When I'd finished and looked at it with pride for a week, I realised that I'd built a totally useless object and gave it away.
The reason I have found a new interest in model boats is that I bought a mixed lot at a real life auction which included lots of issues of the Model Engineer Magazine from the 1950s.
The articles in those magazines are fascinating and a large proportion are concerning boats.
I expect there are one or two members who know me from elsewhere.
So, that's it - except that I can't keep serious for very long.
Thanks for the welcome.

Hi
Welcome aboard.

Posting pics is easy. The main issue is they need to be the correct size.
Reduce pics to 640 x 480.

Then go to the post/reply/writing message screen. Just below the white box you type into is Additional Options... click on here to open up the picture posting options.

The rest is straight forward, but if you get stuck, holer.

Thanks for that.
I'll have a go at showing you what I do.

er ... I may be some time.

You're probably too late with the warning.
Yes - I can model wrecks.

Folks mostly call me DD - saves concentrating.
Except SWMBO who has her own names for me.

Aha ! just the kind of detailing for a hill-billy, wood yard, scrap-man barge for  a Springer !  An easy first-timer`s boat or come up with some interesting cargo for one of the ones you got in the sale.

There you are see...babbling on about hill billys and scrap yards...totally lost it. That's what'll happen to you DD (isn't that something to do with Jordan?)

You won't be interested in buying but there are some more pictures of a diorama I have on eBay at the moment: 170294402376
Saves a lot of messing about with pictures.
(Hope it's not against forum policy to refer to it! Don't want to go before the beak on my first day!)

My friend Sam has a little cabin cruiser and we go fishing for sea bass.
Lots of trouble from SWMBO if I'm away for the whole weekend though.
I might have a picture taken on a fishing trip.

Unfortunately not, Colin.
Do you think that I'd be sitting at the computer if Sam was waiting to go fishing?
Just a pleasant dream I'm afraid.

Ah, Martin - a quick glance at the OMRA calendar will reveal an "empty" weekend on a certain date.
It will be like the boating equivalent of 'Hell's Angels' turning up at your Aunty's wedding  :o :o {-) {-)

Hope you've got the rain ordered for Sunday - wouldn't be the same without it  :P

Righty then, calling all OMRA peoples, Wicksteed trip 23-24th May, all expected to attend and ask Martin individually "can I sail this?", holding up something powered by a Zenoah %)
Title: Re: Hi - I'm new here.

We'll be fine Andy, we're all on 2.4MHz so we won't clash  {-) {-)

Does a CMB 80 count as a Zenoah - or is it too small  %)

Sorry for nicking your thread, DD, but Martin started it ......   O0  :embarrassed:

That'll do fine.

REWORDING STOP PRESS - all OMRA boats expected to attend :-))

Blame the owner for stealing the thread....

I am so ashamed at being in the doghouse on my first day, I'm pleased that you are running interference for me.
Even more unsettling is that, being thick, I can't quite grasp what I did wrong.
I guess 'inappropriate' is in the eye of the beholder.
Not complaining, just want to make sure I stick to the rules!
I should have got a better feel for the forum before I made jokes.

Hi ddolfelin,

Yes best to take the temperature before jumping in, but no harm done.

We are pretty laid back on Mayhem but we have found that some subjects do tend to go downhill rapidly, pictures of "pin ups" being one of them. So we tend to nip things in the bud on the basis that you can find that sort of thing in plenty of other places if that's what you like so there's no need to have it on Mayhem as well. We are about model boats, not boating models!  ok2

As a fellow connoisseur of fish and marine mammals (that's MAMMALS, Martin   :police: ), please feel free to send me a copy of the original photo via PM and I will give you an honest appraisal as to whether the fish actually is over-endowed  O0

Given that the average age of the Mayhem membership is 127 years (and Mayhemmers NEVER exaggerate)  Martin did the right thing by removing material likely to pose a threat to health.  You now know better than to post pictures of big GILLS. Go stand in the corner  :P

Title: Re: Hi - I'm new here.

As a result of hooking up with Sam (who is no angel), I'm getting battered from all directions.
Although I'm a dab hand at fishing - perching with rod in hand friends at a plaice on the harbour wall and having a whale of a time - I'm not so shellfish that I can't provide a telephone number if you want to hook up.
Lines are open later. If you 'phone now you may be charged so don't carp.
Huh! Those were the dace.

I note this thread has gone rapidly downhill, and I've been away a few hours. These OMRA types seem like big rough men to me, us model submariners are made of much more delicate material...thankfully.

And can someone tell me how we got from Jordan to fish? I seem to have got lost somewhere along the lines.... :o

Yes, folk seem to like the punishment.

I'm just working on a 4mm/foot scrapyard.
The main pun is visual - two men in a punch up.
There is a boat connection, a three bladed propeller on his cart.

I'll take a picture.

... and thanks for the compliment - I'm not used to those.
