Title: HMAS SYDNEY: modelling resource.
Post by: TCC on February 16, 2009, 03:18:29 pm
Hi all
you do know that she was found recently and they'd sent a remote camera down to record her and the KORMORAN?

Well because of all the rumours and conspiracy theories about her, the Aussy Govt. put together an inquiry and this is their web page:

http://www.defence.gov.au/sydneyii/ (http://www.defence.gov.au/sydneyii/)

Well the 'Exhibits' section is a model makers dream for someone making a model of her... or any of the Leander class cruisers... indeed, anything RN. I'm just reading the report about the carley float:

Exhibits: http://www.defence.gov.au/sydneyii/exhibits.htm (http://www.defence.gov.au/sydneyii/exhibits.htm)

Carley float: what it is, how it's made, etc:

http://www.defence.gov.au/sydneyii/COI/COI.002.0016.pdf (http://www.defence.gov.au/sydneyii/COI/COI.002.0016.pdf)

Did you know a carley raft is a copper tube surrounded by 'compresed cork' which then has a canvas finish? Then they attach the ropes, along with wooden hand holds, and the net holds the inner platform and it has enough slack that the platform can fall through the centre so the raft can be used either way up.

It's a sad subject but a modellers dream.
