Title: 105 FOOT "MICKEY MOUSE" MINE SWEEPER
Post by: DARLEK1 on February 22, 2009, 11:16:24 pm
Hi Guys, yet another one of my builds, this little begger sails great and I almost deleted it from the Sirmar range, cheap and cheerfull, this one took me two weeks to finish in total, runs on a two channel and a 400 motor, very manouverable too.

Bizarre!
Great looking craft - two weeks?
You obviously don't have grand -children in hockey, lacrosse and go and mind the other guys!
That certainly cuts into the building time!
A few more photos?

He's either an exceptional modeller who's very fast while retaining accuracy or he's a average modellor without a social life... or it's thrown together and that Humbrol M64 hides a multitude of sins! :-)

I don't have a social life and my builds take a decade or more! What's that say about me? :-)

TCC He is an exceptional modeller who also runs his own business making kits and fittings for the likes of you and me.

Please dont tell him he has time on his hands or we will all be ducking to avoid the fallout. :-))

Thank you Brian, perhaps TCC dose not know who I am?

 Here's a clue for him. www.sirmarmodelships.com  www.psships.com

More pictures comming soon of the "Mickey mouse"

I time all my builds, so I know this one took two weeks spread out over two months working about 3 hours a day on it, not every day, if all's you want to do is build a model and indeed do not have a social life etc, this one would take you two weeks to build if you wanted a quick build on the water fast. As I said earlier, I built this one to see if it was worth keeping in the range and guess what? It is!

BTW, I take exception to the point TCC made about Humbroll paint 64 hides a multitude of sins, it most certainly does not! The new stuff that is available now it is like gnats wee wee.

Martin asked me to post some of my builds on here, so I have, so Mr TCC, stick that in your pipe and smoke it.

Don't worry Dicky, I am not as bad as I was, I got over me stress problem taking over Sirmar, I still work up to 16 hours a day though and have a part time job. OH, and I do have a social life. :-)
 Paul... :-)
Some more pics if this works.

Paul,
seeing as you're pretty nifty with a knife and a tube of glue, I've a little job for ya! It's about 5ft long, 9" beam and needs all the secondary guns ripping out and doing again.  %% I'm looking for volunteers.  O0

Hi guys, sorry I didn't get back earlier, had a busy day and just got back from the airfield. Dicky the MMS is still available, funnily enough, I am just in the middle of making up two semi kits for customers.

Sorry TCC, not enough time to sort your secondary armament out, sounds like ya need a doctor for that? :-) :-) :-)

Hi guys, another quick update on  this one. I will be up dating all the fittings and moulds on this one over the next week or two, for some reason it has become popular.
 Dunno why? :o

Hi Paul,

Great looking model.  Why is it called a "Mickey Mouse" mine sweeper?

Post by: DARLEK1 on February 25, 2009, 09:08:34 am
Hi Oliver, there are a couple of stories why, the main concensus is that they where built using a common hull, but, everything else was either begged, borrowed or stolen from other ships and what ever else was lying around at the time. Each one was different in some ways.

Looks very good! First time I've seen a MMS in model form. I've always been a great fan of small warships and auxiliary vessels like this, they make great subjects for R/C models.

Great looking model.  Why is it called a "Mickey Mouse" mine sweeper?

I think the initials "MMS" (Motor Minesweeper) were part of the reason, along with the reasons given in Darlek1's post!

Thanks Paul and Edward for the explanations.  The crew on the boat is so well done.  They look like little people!
Paul is this a kit or a semi-kit or just a hull?

Thank you,
Oliver

Just asked my father in law if he knew why they were called Mickey Mouses, as he served on these and BYMS after his survivor leave from HMS Capel (formerly USS Wintle). He didn't
Although the BYMS had every convenience going, the crews were much in favour of the MMS (he was based at Birkenhead on the MMS & Dover on the BYMS) He's often told me stories of fishing by depth charging (they had an x trawler skipper) and of smuggling cocoa to France on the BYMS.....................doesn't seem to remember clearing many mines though!!!! (he is 83 so give him the benefit of the doubt)

Thanks again for the kind comments guys, the model is a Sirmar semi kit, the crew figures are also Sirmar figures, the model is to 1/48th scale. I have converted some of the white metal figures into resin for the smaller models in 1/48th as the white metal ones are too heavy for the small size.

Looks great Paul, stll pluging away at my1:48 Corvette could only hope it will be as nice. In the movie Corvette K225 the destroyer captain refres to the Flowers as "Donald Ducks". So we could get the Mickey Mouse minesweepers and Donald Duck escorts together!!

I believe the slang Micky Mouse Boats was given to these vessels with typical Navy levity by the crews of the Fleet Sweepers because of the MM (Motor Minesweeper) and the fact that the wheelhouse looked like it came out of a M Mouse cartoon

I think it's an absolute cracker Paul, not only as a build but also as an example of what can be done with one of your kits.  It would look superb with my trio of 1/48th scale navy tugs but as usual more ideas than time!!

Maybe one day, for the retirement fund!:D
