I am looking for the plans of an Island Class US Coastguard cutter at either 1:32nd. or 1:48th scale. Anyone can help me as to where I might get such plans. The Island Class were built in the 1980's and 1990's by one yard in the States. There were/are 49 of them and they serve on both the Atlantic and Pacific coasts as well as Hawaii, Guam and Porto Rico. At 1:32 scale a model would be just under 3.5 feet long and at 1:48 scale, just over 2 and a quarter foot long.
At present I have e-mailed the US Coastguard to see if they can help. Another possibility is a website called "davesdockyard" , an American based company which supply ship-model plans, but a UK firm would be preferable.
If anyone can help I would be grateful.

Is the Island class you speak about the same as the British customs Island class? If so, Model Slipway do a kit called Sentinel, which is an Island class cutter, originally built by Vosper Thorneycroft. The plan for the model was done by Dave Milbourn.
The photo is of my model Sentinel sailing last Sunday.

Try contacting CGbob at RCgroups, I believe he has built one.
Perhaps he can get you more information on the US Coastguard Island Class, if
that is what you are looking for.

Greetings
If you go to Loyalhanna Dockyard to their Tuabman plans listing ( http://www.taubmansonline.com/ ) and find the link that says "Alphabetic Listing of Plans" and click on it you will find another link that says "Plans U-USS-USCG", click on it and you will find a listing for the " USCG Island Class - 110'. They have a set of plans listed that appear to be in 1/24 scale for $37.50. They also list a Hull for $220.00 and and Cabin for $125.00, both in fiber glass. At the bottom is additional set of plans for $25.00.
Keep us abreast of how the build goes.

I recall Chris Pratt (El Primo Commandante of HMCC Sentinel) telling me that the US boats are essentially the same hull and wheelhouse, built in the US under licence from Vospers, but without the huge Ops Room behind the con. There's some very hush-hush, secret squirrel stuff in there. I've been inside it but I'd have to kill you if I told you what I saw......... They also use what he called proper engines - "not b**** Paxman donkey-pump engines".
The rear part of the S/S is longer and lower, and the RIB sits at the back of it - behind a lattice mast thingy. Chris reckoned it was a prettier boat than Nellie; I'm not so sure I agree, but I much prefer the USCG colours to RN grey.
If you want to build a US Island Class model at 1/40 scale (approx 1M long) then Model Slipway might be disposed to supply a hull only. Best contact them and be very nice to Jackie!
BTW Peter; your model of Nellie looks superb on that water.

Thanks, Dave. She certainly looks the part, and performs well, too. The working stabilisers help her to sit well in the turn, and stop excessive heeling.
As a matter of interest, despite what the instructions say, I used a 6v 4ah SLA battery, mounted on its side, between the prop shafts. I think that the recommended power supply was 2 buggy type NiCd or NiMh battery packs, but I found that 1 SLA equalled 2 buggy packs in weight, and I had several SLAs but no buggy packs. I also needed some ballast on the port side to counterbalance the weight of the RIB. It sits nicely on the waterline, and has plenty of "get up and go".

I can't help you with plans (I could do with some myself!) but I do have a large collection of photos of the Island-class cutters, some very high-res, which might help you with your build. PM me with your e-mail address and I'll send them to you if you're interested.
Have you seen my 1/48 Island class rebuilt from a RTR boat? http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=14554.0 (http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=14554.0) - I haven't done any work on it for a month or so, but I hope to get back to it very soon,
