what colour would you paint it...is it just ships side grey?

They are just painted the standard hull grey. Although the ones I used to load were sprayed at the factory , so they had a better finish than the rest of the "on with a trowl" style of painting we used to do on the rest of the ship.

Thanks Bartez...grey it is then....this device was to confuse incoming missiles ...is that right...or am I confused too!!!

Yes they fire 3" rockets that dispense chaff  "tiny iron filings", that form a cloud that would drift on the wind to confuse the missiles radar. They sometimes had a small launcher on the top that fired 2" flare rockets. I spent many an unhappy hour on exercise behind one of these lainchers. It's where I learnt to sleep standing up "

Most weapons are overhauled ashore and painted ashore, then fitted to the ship during the refit. So they are usually a slightly different colour until the crew or now contractors paint them with the same paint as the hull.
