Richard old mate,

These I make for the kids, people love them but I only

Hello Richard!

Fine looking truck there!

Could you give me/us a few details of the build when you have a moment or two?

Regards,

and is that Aussie B-train based on a Mack?

Ghost, they're called B doubles, and it looks like a Mack to me. Roy will have to confirm it.

Here's a photo of a typical Aussie road train, as opposed to a B double or B triple, with 3 trailers. These can be seen anywhere in outback Australia, although they are restricted to through roads in most large towns.

The photo of the B triple shows the different wheel arrangement of these vehicles.

Peter.

A-spec - semi trailer + semi trailer with king pin riding on a convertor dolly.

B-spec - semi trailer with half length load bay and a 5th wheel, second semi rides the 5th wheel of the lead.

nice argosy cab on the b-trip

Spot on, Ghost  :-)) :-))

B Triple is a Linfox truck, one of the biggest trucking companies in Australia, owned by Lindsay Fox (hence the name, Linfox) one of the richest men in Australia.

Neil,

I drove one regular for a while but not a timber jinker, mine were refridgerated freight
have never driven a jinker but have ridden in one, we used to have big road trains
over here with five trailers, I cannot find it at the moment,I had a photo of the rig
and it was turned and could run into it's own backside.................

The models are not really from any particular truck but can be painted to be Kenworths or Macks
or Freight Liners, Just kids toys started for the grankids, enede up with to many people wanting them..........

Peter,

They are a lot more solid then they look, oldest Grankid has had one for
four years now and it is almost still in one piece, as he lost some of the load
but they are just small branches, so easily replaced.

They take me two to three days to make depending on mistakes and bad wood,
thats why they are only made occasionally...........

there was a guy in this country, roy that made some of these toys, drew plans and instructions for them and put them into a book.
sold very many [ forgot his name] but it just reminded me.
you have the same talent. would ther be an opening for that sort of  model and book for you down under.

Neil,

I don't really make them to sell, just for all my Grankids (10 of)
and for other people with kids that I know, and would be happy
to try something else.........

We are currently in central western Queensland where 63 metre long road trains are common, and almost impossible to pass when towing a caravan, as I am.

Have any of you guy's been to the model show in Dortmund, Germany? in one of the halls they have a truck section with trucks I have never seen for sale in this country super detail in scale with working lights, diff lock and full suspension systems. The is one guy there every years who steers his truck round with a small camera in the drivers cab and he has a 6" LCD TV screen on the transmitter.

Drove for them some twenty years ago. used to park up at Western Ice at Eastleigh when home although I was officially based at Avonmouth.

Got paid night out money when I was home, all above board.

The King Hauler is a nice kit :)
I have one with the sound an light addon.
The carson toxic truck motor is a good upgrade, less top speed (more scale) but plenty of low down grunt like it should be
Don't get the alloy shock upgrade they are way too stiff.... the standard ones are much better
Title: Re: Once a trucker: Tamiya Trucks
Post by: Tug-Kenny RIP on June 07, 2012, 07:35:57 pm

I have revived this thread of Dicky D's as I used to build Tamiya trucks. I built two before I ran out of money, but after seeing them at the Shepton Mallet Showground, my interest is renewed.

Does anyone have one or maybe building one these days. I noticed that the price has shot up Three fold.  Yes indeed. A complete rig with trailer and computer driven everything is now around a Thousand pounds.

I don't suppose anyone has one, unmade and boxed    {-)   before I start splashing out and trying to buy it gently.

Here is a picture of my King Hauler and Mercedes Van to give you an idea of the machinery involved

Regards to all modellers

I've been scouring the Web looking for parts or sub assemblies as well. It's a sort of closed shop, methinks. I would have liked to save the price of the trailer by building my own. All I wanted was the axle and rear wheel assembly.  %)  but these are not available separately.

I watched the film and thought your tractor looked cute. Carson seem to do the right scale but they are Ready to Run types.

Here is the best site for prices, as recommended by the Tamiya GB club that I've joined.

  http://www.fusionhobbies.com/RC-On-Road-Trucks-s/3.htm

and here is my latest club.

My Wife saw the prices last night and there now may be a doubt until I sell some of my boats. (quote)   :}

I built a Unimog shell onto a Tamiya Touraeg chassis, took a bit of a RNLI take on it and used it to tow the Atlantic 75....

Theres a chap on ebay selling sub assemblies including the trailer parts

Sadly tho by the time I had priced up the parts I needed I could have got a complete new kit for an extra few quid!

I was quite lucky.... I picked up the king hauler and MFC-01 from an ebay seller in canada who couldnt spell lol... was new but the box had been opened and I got the 2 for less than the cost of a new King Hauler
Seeing this thread has renewed my interest in mine so I got the wee beast fired up an blew the dust off.
Will post up some pics and videos later

some pics of my "King"
General Overview of the layout and wiring.... The MFC01 and lighting wiring is a bit of a mess (Has been tidied up considerably since these pictures were taken

The "Special" Chrome body
(http://i532.photobucket.com/albums/ee322/Essex2Visuvesi/Tamiya%20King%20Hauler/DSCF0482.jpg)
Looked chaep and nasty so was repainted in a metallic blue

More pics to follow if anyone is interested

Anyone who is considering buying one of these I whole heartedly reccomend swapping the the stock tamiya motor out for a carson toxic truck motor.... far more realistic speeds and a hell of a lot more torque
http://www.carson-modelsport.com/en/products/electronic/electricmotors/produktdetails.htm?sArtNr=500906023

Next I want to get a low loader trailer so I can pull my showmans tractor but I have far too many other projects to finish first

very nice,
Are you going for the motorised support legs as well?
You should try one of the carson truck motors only about a tenner and well worth the upgrade

One thing that really annoys me tho is that Tamiya still refuse to supply ballraces in their kits!

This whats on my shopping list
http://www.carson-modelsport.com/en/products/truckmodels/trailers/produktdetails.htm?sArtNr=500907000

Will be pulling this

Wow. That is nice.   :-))

I built a plastic one years ago and my Wife knocked it off the mantelpiece. Never forgot that.

In answer to your questions.  I have the electric trailer legs kit and the Multifunction unit to make the computer switch lights/sound/cab shake mechanism/trailer support legs up and down/ hazard warning light flash.  It goes on and on. If only it works as stated eh !!

Oh !  and I bought the extra roller bearings set for the wheels and things. Also bought the Carson low rev motor.  You would think I'd won the lottery.  :}

This is how the price shot up as much. I can recommend Stellas in Hong Kong for the best prices as I've done my research and this kit could exceed £1000, elsewhere.

I'm doing a build blog on the Tamiya UK site at the moment and if there's any interest then I could replicate it on here.

Catch you again

ken
