On a recent visit to the London Science Museum I very much enjoyed their "Britain Can Make It" exhibition which showcases British innovations of the 1950s. Part of the display included some blown up images of Dan Dare. I'm sure I'm not the only person on Mayhem who was enthralled by his adventures in Eagle comic as a child.

Oh happy days of my youth!
I remember reading that as a kid and believing I was Dan Dare. Trying to save the world and other planets from the evil Mekon. (Mekonites?)
I'm sure that my wife would, at times, love to blast me of to one of those far flung planets.
Saying that, there are times I wish I could do that to myself. %%

T'were but yesterday - Dandy on Tuesday, Hotspur and Beano on Thursday and Eagle on Friday (now what was it on Monday .... ) {:-{
Then there was the Beezer, Lion, Rover, Tiger and the Topper (and for the VERY old - Film Fun)!
It would have been more expensive than having a TV today - if I didn't have a paper round (took ages :-)) )
Happy mornings ... {-)

This might bring back some memories Colin!

to be honest, I can't remember it being THAT bad !!! :o
Makes you wonder how we've coped with the changing world (having been brought up on the non PC stuff of then) :o %)

If you have a dig around in here
www.dandare.org.uk
there are some downloadable stories.
If I remember Wizard properly, there was a huge collection of what today would be totally non-PC stories, but cracking adventure yarns without a single expletive to be found.

No Danny, I agree, I can't remember it being that bad but then I was young and ignorant at the time. Doesn't seem to have done me any harm though. But, as they say, "The past is another country, they do things differently there."
Mind, you, my Dad wouldn't give houseroom to the Beano or the Dandy which he considered plumbed the depths of moral turpitude... But he did read my Eagle before I got it though!

And of course Dan Dare comes from Southport.... :-))

Wasn't the Mekon the leader of the Treens? I used to make Mekon flying chairs from the plastic stand parts from Airfix Number 1 Series kits - very convincing to a seven year old. And was Digby from Huddersfield or Halifax?
Why can I remember stuff like that from fifty years ago and yet not recall what I had for lunch today?

FLJ
I used to work with a guy named Treen - similar background I think?
(I thought it was only me who couldn't remember what I had for lunch)
Now where's my keyboard? Ah yes...

Remembering what you had for lunch Dave ???? it's probably because DD was more exciting.. (OUCH''' Sorry Liz, I was only joking

One of the best bits of the Eagle was the sectional drawings in the centrefold. Ships, planes, locos, cars, rockets etc. Beautifully drawn, almost works of art.
Barry M
PS Didn't Digby come from Wigan?
-
BarryM,
You are so right about those drawings. I am just sorry I never had the foresight to save them.
Incidentally, the Mekon was recently reincarnated as a female from Finchley and born in Grantham!
I so enjoyed Dan Dare and friends and also Dick Barton, Special Agent with his friends. But my absolute hero was Biggles.

Those cutaway illustrations had a marked effect on my life. I cut them out and pasted them in a 'long thin' scrap book.
After finishing an aircraft apprentership, I went to London, and took a course in Technical Illustration, got myself a job with an agency, and spent many years doing engineering cutaway's and exploded illustrations, and all sorts of 3D models. There was a spell working for the Admiralty. How about an illustration of a gun, a cut away showing the turret and shell delivery system (sorry cannot remember the size) but was drawn up on a roll of linen backed paper that was eight feet wide. the gun drawn in Indian ink and then coloured. To be used a a teaching aid.
Or working for the I.W.M. Duxford. A whole wall full of American WW.II squadron badges in colour, each about two feet square, back lit transparency's, all hand drawn on one side and coloured an the other, I think there were 58 of them.
Good days.
(I have just ordered the Eagle book of cutaways, thanks for the tip)

Anyone remember what Dan's ship was called? The one that was shaped like a ball on a plate so very easy to model in plasticine.
-
He had two ships, Anastasia and the Zylbat :-))
-
He also featured in 2000AD around about the late 70's, the eagle fighter/ troop landing ship was alright, the main ship was like the front superstructure of a 40's warship with 4 main turrets 2 per side, never did like the flash gordon style of ships
