what is your set up and how do you finish your models.
I use various types of paint and finishes but usually finish a model with an overall covering of semi-matt or satin varnish although funnels I like to do gloss.
Wood decking I usually just finish with sanding sealer and brass props clear lacquered.
my Micon compressor and Badger 200 air brush are still like new and must be 20 years old.
Need to replace water seperator and pressure valve soon though.

I use the cheapest badger air brush along with a very old 12v compressor & a small devilbis air tank and regulator. all free via various swaps linked using free air line from work.
I don't do detailed sraying so the basic brish is OK. I am looking at a better brush for more intricate work in the future. I have been using satin paints for my current project USS Long beach. All humbrol enamels. my last project HMS Scarab I sealed the wooden decks with matt varnish after laying. I did spray the bass wood I cut the planks from, with matt first.

I have found that my IWATA air -brush is the best thing since sliced bread, makes painting a breeze....

Mine is a Badger 400 double-action, with a small compressor. The only trouble I find, that for spraying larger areas a gun with 1mm boring upwards is much better. Though I will make up my equipment with a bigger compressor (minimum 10 litres of volume and a bigger gun). I use to take satin colours and seal them with a semi-gloss coat as well (Humbrol-colours with 15% Nitro-Thinner).
I never use gloss-colours as they make (in my opinion) the models look "toy-like".

Hi there. I was looking at some airbrush kits yesterday. Are the small ones that take an aerosol can ok to use on boats, and how long do the cans last. I've never used 1 yet but am thinking of getting 1. Would i be better with a small compressor and if so what specs should it have?. Thanks.
Chris

If you are only going to airbrush one boat per year, then the cans are OK - provided you put them into warm water to maintain a good pressure - but can get expensive. Also if you want to practise your technique, you can get through a lot of gas :) One large gas can will probably allow you to do one hull, and a little experimentation.
I bought a basic kit last year at the IMBS and am now looking for a compressor. Any recommendations?

There are some compressors on ebay. Dont know if they are any good though.
-
Most of the compressors on ebay over here at least seem to be ok, but it's the old story buyer beware, if you can get a double action airbrush you will be able to paint a lot better and a lot more delicately..........

Roy, I made the same experience- a double-action will definately bring better results. But the result is also depending on the combination between the volume of the tank in combination with the diameter of the gun. larger areas need a bigger dia, otherwise you will have the hell of a job to avoyd clouds in the finish.
-
Thats very true JÖRG, I find if I am going to paint a large model then I use a touch up spray gun, which is quite adequate for a larger job.....

Chris - have a look on www.airbrushes.com - Good friendly guy to deal with - I got an Iwata IS-800 Airbrush and a Sprint jet compressor - nice gear! Does just about everything you want it to (with practice) and it has all the necessary bits and pieces too (water trap etc.) Cheers, Brian

I got my Iwata Eclipse and Sprint jet compressor from these people a few years ago. As Brian says - nice gear. My only problem is that I dont seem to be able to keep the airbrush clean and I get difficult to remove blockages. - This is using acrylics mostly. I know its my fault - any tips on avoiding these problems gratefully received :)

I'm sorry.
I couldn't resist it.
I'll go now.
Quietly.
Goodbye. :'( :-[

Don, Rats, Chris,
I managed to get past the home page onto the Iwata info section, so assume website is OK - try emailing Ken Medwell, who i dealt with, explain the application (I was looking to airbrush OO model locos and rolling stock at the time) - anyway, assume he's still with them - knowledgeable guy. [email protected] Hope that helps, regards, Brian
ps Don, meant to add that I haven't as yet tried Acrylics through mine, so I reckon maybe I will email Ken myself before I do!
-
you could also try
www.everythingairbrush.co.uk they are also on ebay, i got a good deal on a duel action one
-
okay ive read all the above but.......
do you guys have any recomendations as to which airbrush kit to buy???
i will be using it for mainly detail work like superstructures, hand railings, boot tops, life rafts etc.

I'll second that Jay.

Hi Gary (d-jnana0 here. In answer to the question, who uses an airbrush? I will if my wife has taken the hints I have dropped for christmas. To laserblue thanks for the info sheet mate. It's just what I need to get me started. I bought some books in the charity shop about airbrushing. It seems that airbrush artists just paint bare breasts. now don't get me wrong I have no objection to the odd breast, but I really want to know how to use an airbrush, I know enough about breasts already.

Checkout the following - suggest buying the excellent DVD airbrush tutorial - and as follow-up member's posts to this thread agree, its designed for modellers, not breast painters! ;D

Is there one about breast painting?? :o

Is there one about breast painting?? from laserblue!
Yeah probably but I'm not allowed to look. My wife only lets me on this one 'cos she thionks it's safe old codgers talking boats. Enough guys. Just tell me the advantages. I'm guessing cheaper than spray cans, more cotrolable and more consistant, plus the ability to mix your own colours? Yeah?
