Title: North West Essex - model boating desert?
Post by: barriew on May 16, 2009, 01:11:12 pm
I am shortly to be moving to the area between Great Dunmow and Saffron Walden in Essex. A search of the MPBA web site reveals only one club - Moorhen in Harlow <:( Does any one know of any others in that area, or are there any other modellers living in that area?

Don't forget that not all sailors join clubs and not all clubs join the MPBA. Lookfor some water on a Sunday morning and hope it isn't polluted by fishermen.
Model engineering clubs often also have boating interests. The Cambridge ME club doesn't list a boating section but may well have one. There is I think a modelling event at the Cambridge Industrial Museum this weekend so if you are down south then they might at least have people who know the scene.
Another possibility is Audley End House. They have lakes and a railway so may not be adverse to some boating activity unless your interest is in noisey high speed stuff.

Think yourselves lucky with having clubs and other people who build, in the town where i live there are no model clubs and there is only one builder of model boats-me. Thats what you get if you live in a small town in the "bush" in northern ontario.

hi barry,
sorry about the incomplete message, something happened and cut me off in mid type, but what I was going to say is that we sail at a little place called pakenham water mill on the A143 near bury st edmunds and at 70 miles round trip I don,t get many days sailng in a month, although it is a nice place to go.

I think your best bet would be harlow they sail at a place called burnt mill, a bit to the north of the town, you could have al look at google earth it is a marina for narrow boats but they have an area set aside for models, they are a friendly bunch down there and I am sure they would make you very welcome.

hope this helps yours ron.      ps. it is alongside the railway line to help you find it

Where i am in Manitouwadge once the ice melts, usually in May, there are plenty of lakes to use untill it gets cold in September and then it,s another 8 months to the next sailing season.
