Built this tug ( about 14" long) and converted it to RC with my small son
We took her to the lake today and she ran well
The main engine is a modified futaba S3003 servo with the gears removed ala the "Boatnerd" site. I used a HITEC miniature servo for the rudder.
Went well until the wind picked up to about 15-20 mph and the "sea state" had swells of about 4". We brought her in as the wind was blowing her around quite a bit and made it difficult to stear at full throttle.
Even with the stern awash, she shipped no water and ran fine. Great fun!

Taking a tug out for her maiden voyage(?) in a typhoon and lived t tell the tail, well done Dave!

No...Wife had the camera with her and my daughter at a different function....Next time though...need to put name boards on her too.

I can't imagine what it must have been like to be on board one of these tugs in a convoy in the North Atlantic. When the wind blows and the waves come, your busy!
The evil flleet meet us head on but we didn't flinch!......Ok so it was a gaggle of geese looking for bread.. ;D

We sailed yet again yesterday and shortly after seeing a snapping turtle big enough for me to call "Nessie", William got the tug caught up in the weeds!
I tried several things to free her, but I ended up treading in after her. No harm done I suppose though I smelled better! :embarrassed:
I am thinking of getting a fishing pole with a weighted bobber as a retrieval device for these occasions.
Would one of you saged veterans offer any adice on a proper retieval rig?...or just count on getting waders!

Bathing suit and don't worry about the water. O0 As small as she is if you throw any thing at her you are more likely to either damage her or roll her over and sink her.

Never really favoured throwing - the THEORY is to throw past and over, snagging with the line when pulling in. Practice, as exemplified by Murphy's Law, indicates a strong likelyhood of a direct hit.

Depending on how far you have to reach, a extendable paint roller stick or small boat hook might work, something like this ( http://paint-and-supplies.hardwarestore.com/47-345-extension-poles/extension-pole-610831.aspx ) and then put a hook or a rubber ball so you can shove the boat back out of the weeds.

the easier way is to take another boat to pond,you and your son,both get to play.
And you can rescue if in problems.

In my experience trying to rescue a boat caught in reeds with another boat usually ends up with two boats in the reeds <:(
We use an inflatable which is kept in the car (deflated) until needed.
Whatever works for you.

On the other hand, if the second boat has a piece of string attached, you get to recover stuck boat, second boat and possibly the offending weed, which can then be taken home, dried and smoked. Or tidied away in the undergrowth.

I think shorts and work boots may be the order of the day...as it subscribes to the KISS Principle.
If I use my STEEL toe high top boots...perhaps "Nessie" will go hungry if I step on him/her during the operation.... I think the water doesn't exceed 4 feet anyway but there is no visibility.
Those of you who have not dealt with an Eastern Snapping Turtle....count yourself lucky. They're a mean, nasty, ugly, 45 pounds of omnivorus armored pruning shears with a serious attitude problem. Stepping on one with bare feet in 4 feet of water is definitely
"sub-optimal"!

....yea I know...its too far to reach with the pole.......My big boat isn't allowed on this body of water and draws too much anyway...

Took her out again this weekend....She was being followed by striped perch, bluegills and kiva's......of all sizes....then POOF, they scattered!

A two foot long trout!. %%...totally dwarfed the Tug!....just swam right under her without even giving her any notice.......We need a bigger boat! {-)
The humor was lost on my 6 year old son as he hasn't seen the movie, but I was in stitches....too funny.....
