Have any of you guys ever experimented with electric start for model boat (glow or petrol)?
I was bored enough (avoiding home chores) to notice this on a shopping channel on TV last week.
£150 I thought it maybe worth experimenting with for a large boat, even a Sea Queen!!!
... it even comes with a ready made prop shaft!

With Electric Start... Noooooooo, I dusant fink so! :P
-
What do you want an electric start for? I want mine to go fast, not be heavy ;)

I thought going was right up there.... ;D

Like to see the starter unit. Must have a bendix on it.
Got any internal pictures of its layoot ?

The Electric start unit must be good !!!! If you look you will see a pull start Handel. Oops
I'm with Andy Why carry all that tackle around when there is no need. A well tuned engine should start up easy.

Anyway 9 times out of 10 the engine wouldn't start as its either went too lean or too rich or an air lock. Also you'll probably need a good battery and controls for it which as to weight. Nice idea.

You can now get these for £99 brand new !!!!
i think electric start is brilliant.
would be very good for race boats to have them fitted as standard
then we could see proper genuine races as all boats could be run from a start line.
and imagine how many could possibly restart and finnish, just like full size boats
plus why pull it when you can put in water nice and safe and flick a switch.
Just imagine the scene,
switch engine off in middle of lake, have a fag and cuppa tea ,then flick switch and start playing again :-))

There were Electric Starters for Aeros several years ago, and I think they are still about in the Car World. I remember Conrad sold two sizes for 'Planes, upto 20 size and the bigger one with a 60 limit. With todays Lipos no battery problem , they used NiCads then. I used one on my OS 90 FS which I had in a DB Mighty Barnstormer, weight was no problem there and it started the FS no problem. Used to give it a few cold turnovers to free the piston, first. Hot starts were easy. Was really good, just stand back and the engine turned over and burst into life, very impressive. No fear of that 12 inch prop chopping fingers!

"then we could see proper genuine races as all boats could be run from a start line".
If you want to see proper genuine races Phill why not pop along to one of our BMPRS events (details on www.bmprs.co.uk). We do rolling starts and the occasional dead engine start as well :-))
Problem with a dead engine/electric start as you are suggesting is keeping all the boats in line so no-one gains an advantage, for example: a boat being blown by the wind across the start line in front of the other competitors just before the start hooter goes off ....... :} Electric starts have their place but not in racing I'm afraid :}
