Is it a kit, semi-kit, scratch build, or.....???
The hull is from Sirmar, running gear are the water tight ones, if thats of any help. I haven't got to the stage when fittings have to go on yet. But they will also be from sirmar.
The plans are in 1/96 from Jacobin.
-
Hi ...i am watching with great interest as i am in the throes of rebuilding one of these........it was in such a mess that i decided to get all new fittings from sirmar and the running gear and the jecobin plans...............slow slow progress at the moment but watching your build with mucho interest :-))
regards.....bob.
-
Erm, why do people paint the bottom of the hull in signal red?
-
I think it might have something to do with barnacles on the underside of the ship, I think they use Red Oxide paint. I may be wrong If I am I'm sure someone will put me wright.
I have decided to change the way the super structure was going to be done because of the overhangs each side of the ship, I am know making them part of the actual deck. I will take some pictures and you will see what i mean. Also having access to the inside was going to be a bit of a tight squeeze so am looking into that at the same time. Progress is a bit slow at the moment as I am making sure all the main structure is done correct.

I used the red oxide from Halfords its the lacquerer that makes it look that red
-
Hi all,
Not much done at the moment, reworked the super/struc because of the overhangs. and made the smoke stacks out of resin.
-
Having worked in the Caledon Shipyard in Dundee,in the early 70,s as a paint sprayer,i can confirm that the use of Red Oxide paint, that contained Lead, was used to paint hulls, the reasoning behind this, was that it acted as a rust deterrant and a barnacle deterrant,as it contained high levels of Lead and fungicidal, which apparently barnacles did,t like,The inside of all the boats I worked on also got Red Oxide as the base primer,Then Grey primer, then white Cellulose primer then the top coat, of what ever colour was required,
All of the above paints are now prohibited, under Health & Safety, although you can still get Red Oxide, and the other primers, but they do not contain lead,

Hi,
My farther use to work with steel many years ago and he used red oxide alot before the steel was dispatched it wold be kept in the yard. I think know they use a type of grey paint not sure what that is called tho.

making progress.
-
How on earth are you going to get it into that little yellow test tank?
:-))
Rex
-
Hi Rex,
That yellow thing is for the dogs when its hot, they like dipping there feet in it. I take apart my other test tank untill i need it. This is the only picture i will be putting on here of the dogs, its for boats!!!!!
-
I forgot to tell you who they are from left to right "IFE" Girl, "NOOK" Boy, "HATSHEPSUT" Girl. There is also "LOSTRIS" Girl she dont like her picture taken so she goes and hide.
-
They are great looking dogs - bet they take some exercising.
Really enjoying following this build, thanks.
-
They only need one walk a day as when we are in the garden they get more than enough running around playing.
-
Hi all,
This is what i have been up to.
-
Some great work there Mc D.
Have you thought about soldering the crane up using brass? Would be a little bit finer.
No criticism.....just a suggestion.
Rex
-
Hi Rex,
I have seen many builds showing parts being built from solder and brass, I have never done anything like that before and would not know where to start, I thought i would give it a go in plastic and even though i am pleased with the outcome I feel I can make it better. Where would i get the stuff to do this, If you don't mind pointing me in the right direction.
-
Most model railway shops sell brass stock in different sizes and sections,
tips on soldering are elsewhere on this forum, and the experts on here can put you right as to methods.
120+ hand cut peices of brass in this mast

First attempt, not too many burns!
Clean brass, good flux, silver bearing solder, and a very hot soldering iron.
oh and more than a little help from Mr. Dremel!

That one bit of kit I would be up SHXX creak without it. (Dremil) One of the first things I got out when I started this build and am very glad that i have one. Its been like having a cyborg hand.
-
Hi all,
Been doing some soldering, which i think went well i will upload some pictures in a bit for you all to see if its any good.
Antony

Here they are.

Very nice neat bit of work, its amazing what you can do when you try. :-))
-
And only two fingers got burnt.
-
is there any way of getting plans for one of these as i dont have the guts to try an scratch build one <:(
-
This is my first RC build, I have done models years ago when I was a teen, now I am 43 and am taking my time and enjoying doing it. You can get plans in the size that you want from Jecobin this is there web site http://www.jecobinplans.com/estore/index.php?
Antony
-
Hi all,
I have reworked the top part and done some soldering on the smaller mast. I have also done the small steps on the large mast and the rings for the steps.
Antony
-
Tiz looking good....well done!
Rex
-
Hi all,
I decided to redo the walkways along the side of the hull as i was knocking them off all the time, I drilled 1mm holes into each one about every 10 mm then marked and drilled the hull. they are rock solid now. I also fitted the anchor mounts by the rear door and done the bits that go on the sides of the hull.

Super looking Model... My father was on the old HMS Intrepid D10 (Destroyer) when she and the Cossack Liberated the British prisoners from the German supply ship Altmark in the Norwegian Fjords in WW 2...

Just found this article on this website. I served on this Intrepid 1989 - 1991 (very much at the end of her life.) I've seen your other post looking for the Landing Craft photos & will have a look thru' my old snapshots etc & see what I can find.
Your build is very impressive!
-
If you have any I would love to have them, I have all fittings now and will soon be back with updates to my build.
Antony
-
Hi Antony, Just wondered how you're getting on with this build and if you have any updates. I'm considering making a model of HMS Fearless and would be interested in seeing more of this great build :-)
-
Hi All,
I have only been doing very small amounts on my build for some time because Ive had health issues. But I am slowly getting back on the horse so to speak.
I have all of the bits from PS Ships and have been taking the bur's of them, and filling any small holes that they may have.
I will upload a latest picture very soon.
Hope to be going full tilt.
Antony
-
Hi Antony, Sorry to hear you haven't been well, but glad to hear your feeling well enough to continue with your build.
I look forward to seeing your progress :)
-
Well done McDuck. :-)) O0
Very tidy build and great sharp edges to everything. :-))
Hope you get well soon and continue to share your progress with us.
Yarpie.

This is what she looks like now.

Not the Intrepid (D 10)my Father Served on when she and Cossack took on and boarded the German Supply ship Altmark in a Norweigan Fjord
Wonder why no one builds a model of her
Jimmy (I Did)

I am Jimmy = planning her as my next project, hull in garage ready and fittings being assembled once I finish my HMS Yarmouth. Have plans, refence book from George Macks biography. You might also be interested to know that some members of our HMS Intrepid Association (not to be confused with HMS Intrepid Ltd which is limited company and not linked to the association of ex HMS Intrepid ships company) is considering a visit to leros in 2013 to pay resepcts on the 70th anniversay or her being sunk. I am hoping to do a recce visit next September in preparation for the 2013 visit. Albert, one of the survivors of the D10 Intrepid is a member of the current HMS Intrepid association.

Thanks for that info. Unfortunately my father didn't survive the war. He was lost on HM Submarine P514 in 42 But I will look forward to the build .

Hi, I remember them well the pair that is, as I had the unfortunate job of devising a method of putting these ships in chains at the top of Portsmouth harbour where they laid until towed away for scrap. It was a difficult job with limited resources, using heavy 88mm CC for the chain bridles with no power on these vessels and only the Moorhen to secure the chains to the buoys. I have some other prints of her in Portsmouth if interested. Intrepid made the news when laid up because she cost the MoD £96m in maintenance costs without ever leaving the basin, one of the reasons was when she was docked her rear gate fell off into the dock with alot of her aft bottom plating, remember seeing new plating being made to replace it, that was near her end with the RN.
-
Yeah the stern gate was often our beach for some R&R when I served on her. When she went to Liveseys if had been repaired which was rather pointless given her fate was decided but then to make the journey to liverpool towed by Ormsby Cross she had to have it back on.
-
The stern on the Intrepid was repaired about 1995, then as with all ships in reserve she had to be maintained to a standard where she could be mobilised. I remember the steam tug Sea Giant, flatten her front end at Portsmouth during the Coronation review of 1976, she as due to go into reserve 6 months latter, but she was still towed to Rosyth and had a new bow fitted to her. The RN used to pay alot of money on old ships in reserve once and commercial firms almost always multiply by ten the costs figure if they know it is a MoD contract. Talking of reseve fleet, we always used to have a large fleet in mothballs ready to go when hostilities arose, I remember Chatham basins where filled with them and it carried a flag rank, but now it is a handful of stripped out hulks on moorings waiting to go for razor blades or a small group of minehunters waiting sale to the greeks or anyone else who has the loot.
-
SuperModels featuring the 1:48 scale Fearless model was repeated on Discovery Shed (242) the other day. watched the whole lot (allthough for some reason 3 episodes were missed) Great show and a very impressive model.
-
Hi Mcduck the pic I have uploaded, is the Fearless to left if I remember correctly, but it does show the difference in the masts. I have another taken from a distance that shows some difference in thier bridge structures.
(http://s15.postimage.org/7v9arejl3/IMG_0615.jpg) (http://postimage.org/image/7v9arejl3/)
I had several more close up ones but alot of my pics are lost around the house, when I find them I will post, had some really good pics of the Huvul trials with the Niaad, but as yet cannot find them which annoys me somewhat.
-
Hi McDuck
After watching a short video of Fearless being towed away, I realised I gave you bum info, in the pics of the two the one without the crane is Intrepid, believe she was cannibalised at times to keep Fearless going.
