Title: stands for model boats
Post by: durhambargeman on November 01, 2006, 04:25:22 pm

Does anyone know where I can obtain a stand for resting a model boat on whilst working on it? I have tried to find a firm that supplies them, but have not found one yet

What sort of a boat? Most kits include either the parts or templates to make a suitable stand. You can get keel clamps, usually used for static period ship models.Try Westbourne models or other shop stocking that type of thing. Billings make a device for building up a model using plank on frame, but once planked its not a lot of use!

I allways build a stand first before starting the boat, it makes things so much easier, cut the stand so the boat sits on it as it would in the water, ie not bow up or down, make the waterline horizontal.

Me too - I usually knock one up from some scrap timber. Since we now have the facility for pictures back, here's one I made earlier.

Hi halcyon,

If you mean working while building as apposed to at the pond side, a good idea (well I think so) is a polystyrene box with the sides cut to the rough shape of the hull. The other two sides can be cut to assist working on the boat on its side. The soft surface does not cause scratches to the hull surface as the model is moved about.

get some pvc pipe and some bends and knock one up in ten mins, cover the rails in insulation sleeves(foam).

Thanks for all the tips. Most grateful. I reckon that I will just have to make one myself. Cheers

best stands are the ones i mentioned because the way they hold the boat on the rails going the length of the hull it means the boat wont twist out of shape if its left on the stand for long periods.if you want some pics of one ill try and find some for you its easy to make and the guys over the pond use them for gas boats so they are very strong and yet very lite!!

ok heres a few pics of some ive found for you, they are especially good for long heavy boats as they support the boat along its length so the boat wont twist or bow anywhere which does happen .
