Title: Gas Valve
Post by: flashtwo on November 23, 2009, 03:36:39 pm
Hi,

On my steam boat I use the Halford gas cylinders with the EN417 thread. Three years ago I bought a suitable gas valve for £12, but found recently the same place was now charging £26!

I couldn't find a suitable supplier just for the valve and ended up buying,  for just £10, a complete gas torch, including an 170gram gas cylinder and the EN417 valve! If you take off the cylinder price, the valve cost just £8.

The torch is manufactured by GoSystem, part no. MT2055. The valve is just as good as the original, although I did have to make a brass adaptor to go from the valve's M8x0.75 external thread to 1/4"x40TPI ME thread.

Ian.

I pick up most of my Gas Valves as small camp stoves, lantern, and torches at second hand stores.

If you want to do your own the thread is 7 /16" x 28 tpi UNS. Remember the thread on the canisters is a rolled thread, so you may have to cut down the thread tips.

Gerald.

Thanks Gerald,

That thread data is very usefull information - I shall keep a note of it and practice on an old cylinder.

Regarding second hand stores - I shall try and find one; they all seem to be charity shops with strict rules regarding second-hand equipment.

I have looked for valves at our local steam and vintage car fair, but with no luck. To go any further I would end up spending more on petrol than it was worth (nearly £5/gallon!).

Cheers
