Title: So... got the plans (for Fairey Huntsman 28)...
Post by: bugs on December 30, 2009, 12:35:17 pm
Got my plans for the Fairey Huntsman 28. Opening them up on the dining table and spent 20 mins gazing at them, exploring the detail. It's got the grey cells going but I'm wondering what's the first step?

I'm guessing I should make at least one copy of the plans, maybe more so I can cut out templates?

Somehow I thought the plans would include templates for each part and more in the way of instructions.

get a couple of copies if they are cheap get 3 then put your original away, you need to start with the keel and bulkheads ask about if anybody has a copy of the veron Assembly instructions of not Ramons post is very good, and a few john Bluebird has done will give you an idea john has done a few similar boats and you will find them better than any instructions, make a list of the wood you are going to need, if you are near MMM models they had some nice ply last time I saw them at a show.

have you got a pillar drill ?

Just spent the day, on and off, reading Ramon's thread. Very impressive! Thanks for the tip-off.

Yes, I do have a pillar drill of sorts (well two, kind of). One is a Record drill stand and the other is a mortiser with a chuck attached. Why do you ask?

get youself some of these and knock up a table for the base of it with a hole for the drums to go through this will speed up making the parts you need 80 grit paper (so it does not bur but it cuts quick)

also see if you can borrow one of these or better still just the disk sander, you will knock up a kit in no time and wont have to worry that your not that good with the jig saw just sand to the line, again as you are doing mainly edge of ply course paper, if you have any problemsand don't want to put on the net PM me and ill try and talk you through as I have a plan hear

one tip
when you get your ply keep it flat at all times with a weight on if possible or make a press, (I have a bit of workshop wall with straps to put all my ply behind) also when you have cut your parts have a place to stack it flat with a weight , you can get all your bulkheads in one small stack till you are ready to use them then once In the  hull they should be stable, I think we have much higher temperatures now to when people bought Aerokits/ veron Kits but I think they where a bit wobbly.

Cheers, Peter. Thanks for the tips. The drum sander kit seems good value at the moment so I'll get one of those straight off. I've got a hand-held belt sander with a stand that allows me make the tool stationery with a rest that enables me to present the sanding face to wood at 90 degrees (or other angles) so I guess I can use that instead of the machine sander?

yep that sound's  ideal the easeyer you can make the parts the less chance of getting fed up and thinking it's to much like hard work, the sanding drums can be great for the inside of bulkheads if you lighten them it makes doing a neat job so easy, the good thing about making your own kit is that if you mess a bit up you just make another, a couple of good files semi corse are handy for the slots where the pieces slot together, another handy home made tool is a bit of 2x1   25/50 about 400mm long and glue some 80 gril on its great for sanding down the frames befor skinning to get them all level and beveling the stringers, on the original the stringers where made of obechie by the way.
