Agree with you FLJ , However I did not think there was vat on postage if using the Royal mail.
Do you want the full lecture or just the reference in VAT Notice 700 'VAT: General Guide'?
Trust me, Mr Build - I have 31 very good reasons to know about VAT....... ;)

nah Full lecture Not Required , went on a Vat course , Fell Asleep..Buffet was nice though. :} and as for Intrastat declerations.... %% %%
I am only showing from our business point of view that we are not able to charge or claim vat back on the postage we use , and was wondering if it was the same. as when we buy our postage (Franking Machine) we do not apparently get charged vat
Quote from vat N.700
1.4 Aren’t postal charges exempt from VAT?
Postal services provided by the Post Office are exempt from VAT, but this exemption does not extend to similar services provided by other suppliers, even where this might be seen as being in direct competition with the Post Office. However, if any delivery charge you make to your own customers includes the cost of stamps you buy from the Post Office you may have to charge VAT on the whole amount including the cost of those stamps.
Clear as Mud...
Anyone use (I think its called) The Balsa cabin ??
-
Not wishing to hijack this thread with VAT matters (I've had a belly-full; and I was also the Intrastat Officer for Notts for ten years!) but have a shufti at Leaflet 700/24, Section 2 on Delivered Goods. SO....... "I will say this only once......."
When the Post Office supply (sell) the service of postage to you then there's no VAT due - so you can't claim any back. However, if you recharge your customer for delivery - which may or may not include the service which you bought from Royal Mail - then there's VAT on the full, delivered price (unless it relates to an export of goods).
There's a change of liability involved for the postage element, in much the same way as a restaurant won't pay VAT on their food ingredients but they have to charge it on cooked meals made from them.
However, any carrier other than the Royal Mail will have to charge VAT on the supply of shipping services to you (so you can claim that back). It's yet another one of the reasons why independent carriers resent the Post Office's monopoly for small items.
OK?
FLJ (Ex-Senior Officer of Her Majesty's Customs and Excise - not ruddy "HMRC"!)
BTW I've just tried the link to Inwood, and when I hit "Materials and Glues" my trusty AVAST! found a virus. Caveat emptor!

How much is the UK VAT?
In Ontario Canada we pay a 8% Provincial Sales tax and a 5% Federal Goods and Services tax.

Gerald.

15% going back up to 17.5% next month.

How much is the UK VAT?
Only just enough to pay my enormous, inflation-proof pension; fill the tank in my Range Rover HSE; pay off my Amex Gold card every month and keep the staff in employment at my Tuscan villa....................and then I woke up <:(

Vat 2.5% is back from Midnight 31 Dec unless you are in a pub or restrauant where you get 2 hours grace
Hopefully this will stop aggro if your round was to get more expensive

Thats OK for you... Finlands equivalent of VAT (ALV) is 22% :(( still mustn't grumble.... We have CONSIDERABLY more Snow than you ;D :P
-
So we all need to order all the bits we need from FLJ now so the maths is nice and easy for him to work out (and save ourselves 2.5%)
Oh, don't you have to pay vat on the lease of the franking machine ?
-

WHAT! You even have to pay for snow ???
Our's is delivered FREE (but that's why we probably don't get very much) %) %)

As far as i can remember the 2.5% diden`t come off petrol last year, but i understand the 2.5% is going onto petrol today. can anybody shed any light on this ?

No - that's not correct, or you'd then have a VAT rate of 20% on petrol, which would require both UK parliamentary and EU approval. Petrol, like alcohol and tobacco, is a product which is subject not only to VAT but also to Excise Duty. The nasty little trick there is that the VAT is added to the price AFTER adding the duty i.e. there's VAT on the Duty ('double taxation'). The rate of VAT changed in December 2008 and again today, but don't confuse that with the amount of VAT - which changes whenever there's an increase in either the dealer price or the duty rate.
And then there's the Fuel Price Escalator, which may or may not be brought back......................... "Simples!"
Isn't taxation fun? :o

Err forgive me if i am a bit thick , but i thought that vat was increasing by 2.5% (maths bit going on now)
as vat stood at 15% and the price of fuel here was £1.06 per ltr that meant the duty was 15.9p , are you still with me ? .
So 2.5% of 90.1p is 2.25p and if you add this to the old vat and add to the price of fuel without any vat you get £108.25p
SO WHY HAS IT GONE UP TO £109.9 FOR A LITRE OF PETROL >>:-( >>:-( >>:-(
Grrrr.
I apologise for the out burst if i am thick :embarrassed: %% .

Did you allow for the cost of crude varying in your calculations ? {:-{
-
Daz
I don't think you're thick - this isn't the easiest thing for a 'layman' to grasp. Read what I wrote again, if you can stand it. The price increase doesn't have to be entirely due to tax changes. If the supplier or dealer choses to take a little bit extra profit from the punters on the back of a tax rise then the Chancellor isn't going to be too bothered. He doesn't have to pay for his road fuel..............we do.
The breweries used to do the same thing every single time there was a duty increase in beer, and there's a bloke round here who made a fortune buying huge stocks of fags just before a budget and then flogging them afterwards with the new duty rate added, and a bit extra for himself.
And your maths is a bit suspect, too. If the price is £1.06 then the VAT included is £1.06 x 15/115, not 15/100. That makes the price excluding VAT £0.92. Add 17.5% to that and you get £1.08, so the supplier is helping himself to an extra 2p. That's what they call business......you can call it what you will!

109.9 pounds for a litre of petrol, I knew petrol was expensive over there But WOW ;D
We down here are around the $1.15 to $1.25 AU per litre depending on the weekly cycle
Nick
-
Nick
That's One pound and Nine-point-Nine pence, not One Hundred and Nine Pounds and Nine pence! It's still bl00dy expensive, mind. For our members' benefit, $1.25AU is about £0.69GB.
FLJ

Yes I did get that, I think, having the pound symbol in front... well ... Our fuel prices are displayed the same way as cents per litre including the 0.9 cents

Dave thanks but you missed a bit out on your reply UNDER should be in your words ,
quote " Read what I wrote again, if you can ^ stand it." un quote . :}.
Nick thank's a million for letting us know just how little you lot over there pay for your fuel, that has realy made a great start to the new year . To be honnest i know we did but i cant realy remember when we used to pay 69p a litre for petrol as we sold it in gallons but i can remember when it was that price per gallon as i had to put two shots of oil in the tank on my MZ ts125 O0 .
Oh my head hurt's %% .

69p per litre for petrol, 10% GST (VAT), no snow, why wouldn't you want to live in Australia??? {-) {-) We have been warned that petrol prices will rise by about 5 cents per litre soon, though <:(

The nasty little trick there is that the VAT is added to the price AFTER adding the duty i.e. there's VAT on the Duty ('double taxation').
How do they get away with this ? i understand as a taxpayer, that we must all pay tax to run the country as such, but this is just taking the mick ?
Are you willing to stick your neck out and say what in reallity you think were actually paying on our gross weekly wage, taking into account just about everything we buy is taxed as well. 40, 50, 60% maybe even more ?
-
It's always been this way, ever since VAT was introduced in 1973, and 'they' get away with it because 'they' make the rules.
As for sticking my neck out - no chance*! I'm sure you can find this sort of information out on 't Interweb, but be very careful of the source. For example, The (so-called) 'Taxpayer's Alliance' or The Daily Mail might have a slant on the figures which the Treasury wouldn't necessarily agree with. Try the Office of National Statistics first - they compile very accurate stats for just about everything. It's the politicians and the media who add the spin to the figures afterwards that devalue them.
FLJ
(*..............but it's probably in excess of 40% for the average tax-paying wage earner............. 8))

In those areas I have personal knowledge of, the Taxpayers's Alliance is every bit as bad as the government in supressing facts which don't support their arguments and misrepresenting those which do. As for the Daily Wail.....
Not sure I'd agree with the word "slant" FLJ, more a vertiginous incline....

You get used to it after a while, Wullie - apart from the Foster's beer that is. Anyway, the toads have eaten all the mice, the crocodiles are taking care of excess kangaroos (and the occasional human), the sheep have all migrated to New Zealand, the rabbits are safe behind the rabbit proof fence, and the dingoes are far too busy baby snatching. As for the 10 year drought, it all depends on where you live. If you live in the outback then it doesn't rain much there because the poisonous snakes don't like the wet, and if you live on the coast, like me, than we have plenty of rain. All we have to watch out for is the sharks, as all the crocs and most of the poisonous jellyfish live in north Queensland.
By the way, I keep a loaded .303 rifle by my side in case I am accosted by a giant cane toad <*< - it must be working, because I have only seen a few little ones {-).
Netleyned, I concede we do have a few quite poisonous spiders, but a firmly applied cricket bat usually discourages them, besides, I can run faster than they can.
Peter.

Peter,I think there is always an element of envy regarding the Australian "no holds barred" attitude to enjoyment of life :-))
Anyway, you forgot to mention that the bush fires get rid of 99% of the dangerous species.
"Fastest Spider - A Female House spider. It can run 330 times its own length in 10 sec. This spider is faster than a cheetah in proportion to it's size".
So that's how you keep fit .... %)

There is a letter in the Times today which says that the Government raised the excise duty on fuel when it reduced VAT but now that it has reinstated VAT to the original rate it has conveniently "forgotten" to reduce the excise duty. This is the sort of thing which brings the Government into contempt - they obviously take us for total fools. Off with their heads...
Colin
-
they obviously take us for total fools
So who pays for their "expenses" and who voted them that priviledge? Yep - a whole country full of fools..........and now the gravy train has started to build up a head of steam again.
FLJ

I think you'll find that there will be no mention of a rise in MP's salaries or expenses in ANY of the election manifestos.
Then, whoever gets in, immediately proposes a pay increase - which they ALL agree on!! Always happens!
Pity we can't have a "Corrupt Politicians" party - at least they'd be honest enough to admit it.
I bet there is the lowest turnout at the General election for years. No one believes anything any more!
Danny

All the tax I pay goes towards the upkeep of HMS Victory....... :-))

You dont need to be VAT registered unless your turnover is more than 67k.

Spiders are a fact of life here in Australia - wherever you live. Nobody worries too much about them, you are just aware that they may be there.
Peter.
