Title: Phosphorus bearing brazing rod question
Post by: nick_75au on January 01, 2010, 07:57:27 am
I have a copy of the AMBSC code for building small boilers, it specifically states silver brazing (containing phosphorus) and copper phosphorus rods shall not be used. Does anyone know the reason?

Nick,

Happy new year in Oz!
A tentative answer to your question till John (Bogstandard)  sees it and gives the authoritative answer :}

I seem to remember that the phosphorous causes or can cause embrittlement in the joint - I think it affects the rate of cooling and the strucure of the soldered joint.
For a boiler we are requiring properties of strength with ductility and corrosion resistance, and generally phosphorous increases hardness at the expense of ductility.
