Or you could try a traingular scale rule -

A rule has measurements start from the end whereas a ruler has a gap between the end and the increments. Just a little bug bear of mine, I used to get a smack on the back of the heed from my college lecturer when we got it wrong. <*<

I have the very same one. They come from B&Q

I find the grip in the centre leads to the ruler slipping when scoring plastic sheet and have to exert extra force with the fingers spread under the handle to hold her steady.

Hope this helps

Ken

I refuse to go down without a fight  {-) {-) <*<

from Wikipedia - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ruler (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ruler)

"Strictly speaking, the ruler is essentially a straightedge used to rule lines and the calibrated instrument used for determining measurement is called a "measure". However, common usage implies that a ruler is a straightedge that is calibrated for making measurements".

(of course I chose to ignore the next line ..... ) :P

As an apprentice,we were taught that a ruler was made of wood or plastic, and that a rule was made of steel, and marked,'standard at 20 deg C'.

Exactly what I thought!

I have a lightweight, metal rule calibrated in metric only, 45cms long, which has a cross section which is flat at the calibrated edge but rises to a hollow hump toward the other side. Below the side away from the calibrated edge is a non slip insert. The hump ensures even, steady pressure is applied all along the calibrated edge. It is made in France by "Maped".

As a rule, I would go along with that.

Sorry, I couldn't resist the pun  %) :-X

Sorry I think you are all wrong.

A ruler is a person who rules and is nothing to do with a measuring instrument, which is only ever correctly called a rule no matter what it is made of!!
