Title: What's the story?
Post by: Mark47 on January 27, 2010, 04:25:54 pm
How do these battery packs compare?

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/7-2V-6800mAh-NiMH-Rechargeable-Battery-RC-Kyosho-Tamiya_W0QQitemZ180380931639QQcmdZViewItemQQptZRadio_Control_Parts_Accessories?hash=item29ff8a9637

Price wise, there is no comparison.

http://www.component-shop.co.uk/html/body_6vp9000d-w.html

15 quid compared to forty three+ P&P

Looking for experiences. I'm on a budget like us all and would love to know, "should we pay 3-4 times here in the UK for all the wee bits that add up"?

I've been using Component shop battery packs for a few years now, no problems.

Their SLA ones are good too.

Service is excellent. If I order a.m I usually receive the goods the next day.

This was just a comparison about price, not Mah. Equivalent Mah would still be £15 compared to £30-35

These are the packs I've been using DickD.

But is this a better/cheaper solution?

(the service is excellent and exemplary from the component shop) But are there cheaper/as good competitors?

Haven't found anyone better Mark.

You are comparing apples and eggs. The E-Bay ones are Sub-C size while the Component Shop are D-size. This gives me a few doubts as to the real  capacity of the E-Bay ones. Component Shop's highest capacity Sub-C pack is 4600mAH and as far as I know there aren't any higher-capacity cells of this size generally available (yet?). A sudden 50% increase in capacity would be a helluva leap in the technology - unprecedented, in fact.

As far as buying stuff on E-Bay from Far East suppliers, mmmmmmmmmmmm..... We've been told by several Chinese manufacturers that they'll print any old thing on a label to order (yep - CE symbols - the lot!). Funny then - if it's that easy then why can't I see either Tamiya or Kyosho on these cells anywhere - just in the tagline for the sales pitch? I can see a figure which I don't trust.

Ever heard of the "Super Power Battery Co Ltd"? Me neither. Wanna risk it? Go ahead; it's your money (not mine).

Makes you wonder though, dunnit?  %)

I saw a report the other day to the effect that high capacity NiMH cells are more "fragile" than lower capacity cells and more prone to damage from high recharge rates.

Anyone else know about this?

Look again, Peter. Two sticks of three side-by-side is 24mm "thick" x 45mm "wide" x 130mm long. That's a Sub-C buggy-pack. As for them burning out in 10 minutes, I wouldn't be totally amazed if that happened. Caveat emptor again?

Its a fact except for the special buggy sub C type packs, I ruined a set of 2400 mAH AA's charging at a 1 c rate.
