Title: source of pre-cut planking
Post by: durhambargeman on February 09, 2010, 12:55:11 pm
Hi all, Although I see that this question has been raised twice without a reply, I will nevertheless ask it again. Does anyone know of a UK supplier of pre-cut planks? Thank you in anticipation.

I doubt if you will find anything off the shelf because the size and width of the planks would depend upon the scale of the model - and there are an awful lot of possible scales.

Probably what you need is a supplier of modelling timbers willing to cut the planks to the sisze you require. Somewhere like http://europe.shipwrightshop.com/index1.html would have the capacity to do this as they manufacture kits but whether they would be interested in small orders is something you would need to check.

Modelling Timbers used to supply wood in various categories but no longer do so.

Thanks Colin. I may just have to get a sheet of suitable wood and try and cut them myself. It`s for a Thames barge, so if they end up looking as rough as the real thing, then they will look autentic I suppose

I to have just planked the wheelhouse floor of my Dickie tug with MC.XXXXXX's finest wood. Allso useful for planks / timber load on my 00 gauge model railway, really good for mixing / stirring and just used them for extra detail ( engine flutes ) for my 10 year old's 6ft tall model Saturn 5 rocket. At Xmas i glued them onto a card model  barn for a nativity scene, baby in the manger and all that........................really usefull stuff and free!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1 ( sort of )

C**t* Coffee do marvellous 'paint mixers' that could be used for planking but a little thick. Lots of sanding might make them OK.

Hiya,
        www.twigfolly.com/

Keith.

I use Dennis Nixon (Twigfolly) for all my timber needs.

His stock is of the highest quality, comes in a wide range of timbers in imperial and metric sizes and is highly recommended.

My personal favorites are lime - deck and hull planking and pear - keels and rigging blocks.

What a tremendous response! I was aware of the standard stripwoods you can buy in some model shops but not that there was so much specialised material available. Mayhem triumphs again.

Colin

I ditto that :-))

I'm currently investigating where to buy this material as I have had no success here in Oz. {:-{

Can anybody tell me what are the widths of planks as fitted to HMS Vanguard and HMS Prince of Wales. I'm guessing about 6 or 8 inches and as for the length - I have no idea >>:-(
Would Lime wood be okay for these 2 ships??

Any idea would be most appreciated. :-))

I went to Craft Supplies in Derbyshire, they do Stringing lines, which I used for deck planking on my Fleetscale Missouri and Bismarck.
Flat Box Line 2.7mm x 0.66mm in 1m lengths packs of ten, back in 2006 it cost me £5.40. They also do 1.5mm / 3.4mm / 6.0mm.
Worth getting a catalogue. Tel. 1433 622 550.

Hi durham, iv been looking into producing planking for my build, but like you there
dose not seem to be anything that hits the spot.
I think iv gotten round this in the following manner.
I visited a shop that deals in model dolls houses, they carry a self adhisive backed
sheet of planked flooring but the planks where too wide for my scale.
each plank was 12 mm wide, far too wide for my scale needs.
What i did was to mark each plank in 4 mm widths and scribe a line with a stanley
knife, when this was done i thined down some mid brown Hunbrol paint and coated
the scribed lines with this, then with my finger, worked the paint into the marked lines.
I think it has worked out quite well as seen bellow

Hope this helps
