Title: 1/12 Tamar build
Post by: 6705russell on February 20, 2010, 05:45:31 pm
After nearing  completion of my Tyne lifeboat i got stuck into the Tamar today, bow thruster fitted (Raboesch prop type), skegs, props and rudders fitted, stern door and Y-boat housing fitted and managed to spray the hull and deck today with the aid of the hair dryer  :-))

Next job is to spray the superstructure and start fitting the brushless motors/speed controllers...

Do you not think the orange on the Tamar is a little dark. Paint darkens slightly as it cures.

Nice job though. :-))

Post by: 6705russell on February 21, 2010, 06:56:48 pm
It does look slightly dark as i took that picture inside, looking at it outside it seems ok. I have looked at pictures of Padstow and Tenby,s and they look two different shades..

I suppose its how you take the picture and what the light levels are?

That picture of Tenbys' Tamar in boathouse is exactly as she looks. I should know, I took it.  Was nice bright sunny day, loads of natural light in those new boathouses. Tamars definately look a brighter orange than the Tynes, seen enough of them. She's looking good Russ ok2

Thanks for all the information. There are certainly subtleties in the shades.  As I've already bought my shade, I'll have to try it and see what comes out, but I shall be referring to this if I have any doubts.

Thanks

I know Whitby's' Trent Class used paint from a company called 'desoto' (think spelt right?) shade was 'international orange'. That came straight from RNLI engineering in Poole. Though using the exact same colour may not always look right of course. Dave.  {-)

Hi Russ,
the motor you have for your tamar are to fast.Thay will just get hot and use lots of power,You need a motor 400-500kv max.I did all the work out for Adrian on this boat and also the the 1:12 seven.
This the baby you need.

Alan,

What are you using for the power source for these motors?  (Type of Battery or pack)
and are you using one power source for both motors or one each?
Also what speed controls are you using?
Just trying to do my homework before buying the kit for this big beast

The current drawn by the specified motors at maximum efficiency is 50A. I doubt if you'll find any gel-cell of 7AH which can deliver this sort of current continuously. You should consider fitting NiMH or LiPo power, or be prepared to be disappointed.

I agree with FLJ, and also the boat in the video seems to be running faster than scale.
Title: Re: 1/12 Tamar build
Post by: debssnal on March 30, 2010, 04:31:09 pm
Hi i have been running brushless set up with gel cell for three years now and have never been disappointed. The motors are so over powered They would never pull the 50amps.lifeboat Paul also uses gel cell in his arun for two years and his not been disappointed.yes The Tamar in the video is over scale speed,it was done to see how it was on 24volts.when it on 12volts it runs at a nice scale speed. My jet drive lifeboat it the same.when i run it on 12volt (12volt 12ah battery) It runs for over one hour.I also run a fishing boat 6volt 7ah,runs for over 3hours.wyeforce tug 6volt 12ah runs for over 5 hours+ towing club dingy

Russ,
It's looking good. The Tamar has a real presence in the water....you can even forgive it being so ugly!
How did you seal between the deck and the cabin front/sides? Do you rely on the moulded upstand or have you fitted a rubber seal too?

I have not decided what to do with the connection between Superstructure and hull, i might run a sticky back foam around the coaming to act as a seal and to stop any vibration, for testing i have just used three self tappers to secure the two...

I tend to use around 6 aerosol cans on the hull, 2 primer and 4 top coat, for the wheelhouse i use 2 cans of primer and three cans of top coat, then to finish i use two cans of laquer overall..

Hi Russ,
That's really helpful. Looking at how good your finish is, I'm wondering if it's worth the effort of an airbrush. Did you use gloss or satin lacquer?

Chris
I did my Model Slipway 1/16 Trent with an airbrush and it was bit of a nightmare %%, much, much easier with the aerosols. Use the Halfords ones, they're acrylic water based sprays. He's used Peugeot Seville Orange, though some use VW Brilliant Orange (see 6705russell's Tyne Class Lifeboat thread, not sure what listed under) Ford Galaxy Blue for the hull, not sure which red but he'll let you know. I've used Ford Polar Grey for the rear railings on my lifeboats, satin black for rest of railings, capstans etc, Toyota Silver for window frames. Make sure you use white primer for the superstructure and all orange parts or it will look too dark after orange topcoat, I've learnt that one the hard way! %) Make sure too that you don't use any cellulose based sprays with the acrylic as they can react. Any detail work I just pick out using Humbrol enamel paints. Hope this been of some help to you, good luck, let us see some pics of your build, Dave :-)) :-)) :-))

It provides a far more uniform fluidity of the solder at each joint.......just a thought.......

Does anyone know where i can obtain a radar motor that is no more than 10mm in depth x 15mm in width?  I want to keep it as discreet as possible and there is not a lot of room under the radar base as you can see in the picture....

Thanks

Slow progress this week but managed to finish the stern railings to a point and made up the main rear door hinges, these are bolted through now using 12BA hexagon head bolts, for the railings I used 14BA bolts.

Over the past few nights I have made up a smoke unit, 12 volt with a small fan that pushes the smoke through the tubes and out the exhausts, this will be linked to the sound system to start at the same time and run for a few seconds...

Well I filled the smoke unit up with baby oil and this is now operated on a timer, engine sound starts along with smoke machine and then the smoke machine switches off after about 20 seconds, trying to finish the hand railing on the wheelhouse now....

Russ,
did you get any suitable photos of the Tamar on the water? I have only seen one on the water,in a small portable pool, which was the super model made by Phil Locke. I hope you can get some more of your build before you depart for Aussie land, when is it you actually go,I seem to remember it is quite soon,so you will have to give your build watchers something to see before you go !
