This is to be my next build.
I bought the kit second hand and am still waiting for parts.
I will put on photos when I start.

cool new build :-))
but {:-{
why is the hull blue?
Mat
-
You seem to like your grey boats Dicky. O0
-
See you're not colour blind Mark, mind you I only have five grey ones out of fifteen.
-
... but it's blue!?!? :P
-
Not you too, ask shipmate60 he'll tell you its grey. >>:-(
-
Richard,
I thought you were the one who was colour blind, but Bob must be as well because that hull is BLUE........... :-)) :-))
Roy
-
No the hull is not blue it is light grey, the flash makes it look blue. <*<
-
Right so I have made a start.
What I have here is part of a 1990s kit, [lots missing] an instruction book of 2000 vintage a drawing that doesnt really tie up with either and some sheets of plasticard.
Its a real head ache.
Have so far made a new rudder to replace the white metal one.
I have fitted the prop shafts and made the A frames.
The motors have been fitted.
A box made for the batteries.
And two strips of lead placed in the bottom of the hull.
It was then tested in the test tank and appears to be Ok for the water line, and everything works.

Dicky,
1 tip is to run another actuator from the steering servo to the tiller head.
It gives far more positive steering and eliminates the possibility of the rudder going "over centre".
This one should give you lots to think about so take you longer to build, so far better value for money!!!

Interesting!
My HMS Amethyst, bought new from Deans Marine within the past few months, also had parts missing, instructions that did not match the kit and the moulded parts (resin and metal) were not produced to a very high standard - quite poor in fact. The deck templates did not fit the hull properly - one template had to have about 7mm shaved off before it would fit and the transom template was a completely different shape to the hull and deck transom. The painting instructions contradict themselves in various places in the instructions, so I had to make a few educated guesses and took some artistic licence. I had to make up quite a few parts from scrap to finish it off, but there were some parts that I couldn't reproduce, so it's still incomplete, and will remain so, I'm afraid.
That said, after a lot of fiddling and bodging, it's not looking too bad, despite the ongoing patching-up after my disaster with the varnish. I'll post some pics when it's finished.
But the hull is white (well, it was before I painted it)

I have built many of Deans kits and know Ron Dean to speak to, there are I must say alot of shall I say Issues with some of the stuff, but I just get on with it and build and change what needs to be sorted in order to make the boat look right, Deans tends to give you the basics, some of the fittings that I got for my Dido class build where in the fittings set for the Dreadnaught build that I did , Problem being, erm no, those were not fitted to a Dido class in WW2 and on Dreadnaught in 1915 or what ever.
www.psships.com for Dreadnaught, Dido, (HMS Hermione) is on here or I can now post pictures :o
Paul... :-)
-
Ah Dicky man
Not again, how many times have I told you - you have that rudder upside down again.
Looks good - we will make a scratch builder of ya yet! :-)) :-)) :-)) :-))
Have you noticed the kits you are buying are getting less and less with regards to parts supplied....aye, it is all in the master plan my man
aye

I just bought a kit of the HMS Amethyst and it arrived late last week. none of the parts were missing and when i inspected them they
looked very good to me, the plans were alot better than my HMS Javalin kit. well..... everything in the new HMS Amethyst kit is better
than my HMS Javalin kit. the only thing that dident look right is the hull is "dished up" (not flat) on the bottom, but i can fix that with
some fibreglass bulkheads and epoxy no-problem-o. I do like Dean's kits, I have had alot of fun building my HMS Javalin. you can see my
build thread on Deans forums under HMS Javalin.. I do plan to build my HMS Amethyst as the HMS Starling.

Have done a bit more now.
The hull has been painted and the portholes epoxy'd in.
The deck hatches and coamings are all fitted and fixed.
Main work to superstructure is complete with a few details still to be done.
Have started fitting the fittings which will be as near as I can get them to right.
This is awkward as my drawings, instruction book, CD of photos and other plans I have obtained all refer to other ships of the class or of Amethyst after several refits.
Not to worry, I shall have a ship at the end of it.

Have done a little bit more, most of which is scratch built.
Have made and fitted the two masts and the range finder and the break water.
I've made the 4" gun turrets and fitted them temporarily.
Made the guard nets behind B turret.
Fitted several more resin fittings
Just love scratch building just hope I live long enough to finish it.

Another DD object lesson in model boat building almost finished! :-)
I for one, would be very interested in detailed tutorial of finishing and painting a styrene superstructure Dicky....
-
How to finish and paint styrene -
1) Ensure surfaces to be painted are clean and dust free.
2) Follow the instructions on the paint to be used.
3) If brush painting, use good quality brushes. To paint large surfaces I use 0.5" to 2" decorating brushes. For small areas and details the brushes I use are the OO, O, 1 and 3 sable brushes from the link below. I tried to buy similar quality brushes from an art shop several years ago and they were 3-4 times more expensive!

Blimey is there any boat that comes from the DickyD workshop that isnt outstanding :o
Richard if you fancy a real challenge and plenty of scratch building Bob has the Richelieu hull in his loft which im still going to build but have other things to finish first.
Jay

Well it's all finished apart from the electrics, which all work but need some tidying up.
Thanks for the nice comments during the build and the one or two odd ones [John]

Just been down to DickyD And dropped something off (yes from Luton!) and I must say the pictures really do not do the actual model justice. It is really a superb build! Hope you enjoy the box Dicky!!!

Will do when I'm allowed to open it Pete, mind you I have ordered the motors and brass props for when I do.
-
That didn't take you long.

Maiden voyage day today, so off to Setley Pond.
Typical spring day, cold, windy and raining.
She sailed well considering the conditions.

I`ll post a thread when I get some time mate, just don`t seem to have a lot of that at the moment :embarrassed:
-
Hello , First time here and thank goodness for the marvel of the internet !
Started this model today from Deans Marine and glad I found the thread before starting it , without the clear pictures and hints I would have gone ahead with the plans ... having now looked at the 1mm deckplan of the boat I see that the hull is out of shape and will need to be brought in to match by almost 1/2 an inch to match.
By the way its not going to be HMS Amethyst but a similar black swan class sloop of the same era HMS Mermaid which my late father served with during his time aboard her.
It will be a static display hopefully by the time I finished I may have gotten some tips on doing a seascape for her to sit in.
-
Hi Ramone and welcome to Mayhem. :-))
Please feel free to start a build blog and ask any questions you may have
Cheers
