Title: Low-tack Masking Tape

Can anyone suggest a genuingly low-tack masking tape that can be applied to thin card without removing the surface on removal?

Ordinary masking tape takes the surface paper off one in three times. Some supposedly low-tack stuff that I had used on walls does likewise.

Any thoughts?

Barry M....try PVC electrical insulation tape......  OK for paint masking & will be OK as long as you remove @ an approx 160 degree back angle......... O0 Derek

I stick a bit of normal tape onto my shirt, then put it on the model, that takes a lot of the tac off it - try it.

I've tried Dereks suggestion and it works fine as long as the tape is not left on for too long. Thank you Derek.  :-))

I note all the recommendations for Tamiya but are they the result of using it on card?

I have used the 18 mm Tamiya stuff to tape plans on to a wall, but bearing in mind the plan was held in place for several months with it, it did tear the top layer of paper off the plan, I have also used it short term on card and it was OK, but not knowing what type of card you are using can not say that it would be OK to use.

Barry, Tamiya masking tape works perfectly on card. I have even used it on printer paper with no problems so long as you remove it once the paint has got tacky.  Chris

Thanks for your info which is reassuring. 

I experimented with Derek's suggestion of insulating tape on some scrap and it proved to be worth following. It also rang a bell with me which led to an expedition to the bitsa box where I found some rolls of 3mm wide plastic tape given to me some years ago by a draughtsman. He was having a clear out as he had a shiny new CAD setup and suddenly paper and pencils were old fashioned. It worked for him and it seems to be working for me. If it proves OK, that's the road I'll go; if not, I'll add to Tamiya's profits.

Automotive masking tape (I use Blue 3M) is a low cost alertnative when painting big areas compared to Tamiya. Works fine on card.

Some years ago when I worked in an art studio, for airbrushing on paper we used to run Sellotape backwards and forwards over the edge of a table, it would take the real ' stickiness ' off, and had the advantage that you could see through it.

Struth, my wife was not impressed   <*< with my shirt afterwards. She got really tacked off.  >>:-(  {-)
