The Italeri Swimmwagen is only 10cm long, so would be damn near imppossible to convert.

Perhaps you're thinking of the 1/6th scale Schwimmwagen by Dragon models?

Or the smaller 1/16th version by Eduard?

I've got the Eduard kit but even though it's the biggest model Swimwaggen available I'm still not convinced that the conversion is possible. There's not a lot of space to hide the mechanics and the kit is probably a bit heavy for floating. Mind you, they did sail with the waterline pretty close to the door tops.

I recently tried to build a Top Gear style Damper van and just couldn't get enough bouyancy in the thing to make it work properly. Mind you, the waterline on that is pretty low. Photos of this floating(ish) VW at: http://philsworkbench.blogspot.com/search/label/Damper%20Van

Good luck though, I'll be interested to know if this IS possible.
