It's thirsty work building a puffer
-
Nice! :-)
-
Especially when he appears to be doing it all on his own!
Looking good though!
-
It's now time for some serious painting and it looks as if the Mate wants to do it all by him self

And now it's back to more sandpaper and grinding
-
Coming along nicely - so is the lawn!
Mike
-
Oh don`t mention the lawn, wheesht man >>:-( Mike your puffer is looking good but remember they were working boats , keep it mucky or "stoorie" (dusty). If you need pics of VIC 32 I can post them or email to them you. Are you a Para Handy fan ?
-
Arrow5,
I shall have to ask my Scottish friends what a wheesht man is - but I'm sure the cap fits me! Not so sure about my puffer looking good, I'll be reporting on current progress in the next week or so but my build rate is nothing compared with Late02's. I will certainly be making it "stoorie". Many thanks for the offer of pictures of the VIC 32, but we had a holiday on her some years ago, so we have a fair number. It sounds as if you have too! Yes, I am a Para Handy fan and have the DVD. What a pity the BBC threw away the tapes.
Mike
-
Sorry, I missed the point about "wheesht"! I now know that it means "hush" or something very nearly as polite. That's the problem with being a sassenach. It was the fact that Late02 is changing the colour of his lawn to match "Wee Dram" that caught my eye. His grass is in better condition than mine!
Mike
-
Mike , no I havent had the pleasure of a trip on VIC 32 but see her on the Loch Ness trips ( I live about 35miles away) . Quite a lot of the BBC Para Handy series turn up on Youtube. The old black and white film starring Duncan MacRae was my favourite. My first Springer was/is a Puffer ! Keep the build pics coming.

Everything seems to come together nicely as seen in the test fit.
(http://s3.postimage.org/zTjy0.jpg) (http://www.postimage.org/image.php?v=PqzTjy0)
There are some minor issues though. There where not enough 1.5mm plywood to finish the hatch but seems to be an extra sheet of 0.8mm instead. So its of to the local hobby shop, and one hatch clip was missing but it was possible to make a new one from one of the extra bulwark stays. The holes are for the loadspeaker to be placed beneath.
(http://s3.postimage.org/zU3WJ.jpg) (http://www.postimage.org/image.php?v=PqzU3WJ)
Both doors for the superstructure are for the port side. By turning one upside down and drilling a new hole for the door handle I think I'll manage although the hinges are not one the same hight.
(http://s3.postimage.org/zUxSr.jpg) (http://www.postimage.org/image.php?v=PqzUxSr)
The valve wheel doesn't look to nice either but I think its fixable.
(http://s3.postimage.org/zUHR0.jpg) (http://www.postimage.org/image.php?v=PqzUHR0)
I've also started gently to add some weathering to the main deck.

(http://s4.postimage.org/lFRsA.jpg) (http://www.postimage.org/image.php?v=aVlFRsA)
And it's always best not to mix up the pictures
-
Lost some time helping my girlfriend with her boat.
(http://s4.postimage.org/QygWA.jpg) (http://www.postimage.org/image.php?v=aVQygWA)
But now it's finished and the testrun yesterday worked perfectly
(http://s2.postimage.org/y6bci.jpg) (http://www.postimage.org/image.php?v=Tsy6bci)
But here are some photos from my own boat. The problem now is that there are 9 windows out of 12 missing. I really should have checkedall the plastic bag when I received them

A stunning model in the making! The builder seems to be making that drink last - or perhaps he's had a few refills!

Started working a bit on the radio and electric installation
(http://s1.postimage.org/QJG69.jpg) (http://www.postimage.org/image.php?v=gxQJG69)
(http://s1.postimage.org/QJL5r.jpg) (http://www.postimage.org/image.php?v=gxQJL5r)
Finally a picture on the nail in the deck which I think looked quit good
(http://s4.postimage.org/7TIji.jpg) (http://www.postimage.org/image.php?v=aV7TIji)
-
The standard radio installation was finished last night so it had to be a testrun in the bath tube. The boat need a lot of extra weight as it's waterline are more than 5 cm above the water and a few cm of the propeller stick above. It make a very big slash though.
To day the missing wondows arived in the post (Thanks Sue) so it's back to buliding on the structure again
-
Today it's a normal working day so some work has been don

I enjoy seting everything up so that you can see how it will look like in the future when everything is done.

Today the chains for the rudder was shackled but I'm not sure how to make the break where the chains should go up to the cabin as invisible as possible.
Did some painting on the wheelhouse as well

Today a few things has been done. Not that much work in it self, but the results looks good.
It now got a name on its side and the railing on the quarter deck is in place.

I'm sure he will treasure the view of your workshop for the rest of his days! (By the way his cup looks as if it's ready for a refill.)
Great work, your attention to detail is paying off.

After a few days of in Sidmouth and a visit to Westbourne Model Center to look what to do after this building is done I'm back with the Puffer. The day when everything is done is getting closer. Hopefully it's completed before the holiday.
And finally what You'll all been waiting for it's time for the fourth crew member to show up. The deckhand has been invisible from the start of the build until now. Probably sleeping in the foc'sle the whole time.

I missed your post on Tuesday (having a chunk cut out of my ear!). You must be a very quiet worker if the deckhand slept through all you've been doing lately! Hope you enjoyed your stay in Sidmouth.
Mike
-
I think the deckhand is a very close relative to the Tar on the Vital Spark
-
That's a beauty of a build and lovely choice of colours too.
Please keep the pictures coming!
-
Great work, your attention to detail is paying off.

Today it was time for the maiden voyage. There are still thing to do but it was such lovely weather so it was time to hit the beach instead and try the puffer in the sea.

Most thing worked OK but the chain I've bough as the one in the kit wasn't long enough was not up the the job. It snapped all the time
-
Thanks for the pics. Even the trolley is a work of art!
She looks impressive on the water - you must be a very happy chappie.
Which chain kept breaking?!!!!!!!!!!!!
Mike
-
I bought some chain from the local hobbyshop which I think was for static models. It looked allright though so I used it for the forestays. Not so smart either.
The Trolley belongs to my Girlsfriends son but I was lucky to borrow it as it's a long way down to the beach.
-
Sorry - still thinking about your chain problem! When you say "snapped", do you mean that literally or were the links not welded and pulled apart?
The reason for asking is that for the steering gear on my puffer, I looked at several samples of brass chain with brazed links but, because of mishapen links, felt it would not run freely over the sheaves. In the end I bought some silver chain from a jewellers supplier (not as expensive as it sounds!) which works well and, for its size, is pretty strong (having survived an incident when the servo tried to pull it beyond its limit).
Mike
-
The links where pulled apart. I think the problem was that on a static modell You'll get away with this but in a working modell the forces are much higher
Lasse
-
Thanks Lasse - I feel happier now! Keep the pictures coming.

Tried this evening my interpretation of what is described in The Clyde Puffer by Dan McDonald as "At times the unburned gases formed a 5ft tongue of red flame at the funnel head, and at night the pillar of fire and the eerie glow bathing the deck marked the puffer's progress." Although the flames might not be 5ft I still think it looks good.
