Title: Broads cruisers
Post by: rockets on April 17, 2010, 12:06:22 am

Hello,

Just in case any of you chaps are interested in broads cruisers like me, this is an interesting resource you might like. This photo gallery is of holidays on the broads in the 50's and shows remarkable shots of motor cruisers, sailing cruisers, wherries, speed boats and even converted ex Navy MTB's in use on the broads.
It's also a great snapshot of holiday life on the broads during the 50's.

Cheers,

Broads cruisers were never my thing but I was introduced to them by the great Ron Wem:

Brought back some memories looking at those photos. My first Broads holiday was in 1965 aboard the Planet class "Jupiter" from Southgate's yard at Horning.I seem to recall it was very similar to the scenes in the photos. I don't much care for the Broads these days.

Hey Harbottle,

I have to say that I have only had one holiday on the Broads, that was in 1975 when I was a child. My memories of it are a bit vague to be honest and my most recent memory of the area is of being posted to Norfolk in the military, which wasn't the nicest post I've ever had!

I'm glad you liked the pictures, I do like the old wooden broads craft.

Rockets.

The wooden boats do have an atmosphere that modern boats can't compete with. The last holiday I had on the Broads was in 1980 sailing a 27 footer from Woods at Potter Heigham. We only ran aground three times in the week ... which I think is reasonable.
