Title: Mayhem Weekend !
Post by: Martin (Admin) on January 01, 2007, 02:24:32 pm
MAYHEM WEEKEND!
MAY 26 & 27   2007 (Sat , Sun) - confirmed!

This is an open invitation to all visitors of the Model Boat Mayhem and Forum.

After looking around for a fairly central location that is easy to get to with great facilities,
we have approached the Wicksteed Park Model Boat Club asking if we can use their lake
over a weekend on May 27 & 28 2007 -  Bank Holiday weekend.  WICKSTEED PARK has
a host of facilities not only for model boats but the WHOLE FAMILY! _ Have a look at
their website - http://www.wicksteedpark.co.uk/

We would like to make this an informal fun get together aimed at all the Mayhemers out
there who would like to meet and have a good old chinwag off line and of course sail their
boats with overnight camping encouraged for those who wish to stay late chewing the
cud and sinking a beer or two.

As there are so many trade events during the year, we are not promoting this event has
such. Traders will be more than welcome but purely in the capacity of having a relax and
a sail, probably showing off a few existing or new models and maybe putting on an on
water display (e.g. formation destroyer or tug dancing !!! ). Static displays etc are welcome,
but no trade stands as such.

We are hoping that clubs may wish to bring along a tent and show there models and put
on a few displays as well, but have not approached anyone yet.

What will be on offer:
Free entry
Free Sailing
50% off parking - on presentation of voucher - ( email me for voucher! )
Free pint or two for any Mayhemers camping kindly sponsored by (open to offers)
BBQ, we supply he heat, you provide the meat
Free evening entertainment (well a film show or something)
Expert discussions and advise (Martins Jabber)
Free Shelter if it rains, sun shelter if it doesn't (well you never know)
Free to enter static display (well somewhere to keep your models when not sailing)
Mayhem fun awards, we'll think up some suitable reasons to give them out during the weekend
Club display areas (if they want to)
Tea and coffee all day for Mahemers available all day and evening!
Camping overnight  £10.00
No moaning ....... because nearly everything is FREE!

As this is informal we will be providing various awards, certificates, trophies etc for classes
and winning models in categories that will become obvious to us during the weekend !?!
e.g. furthest travelled, best sinking, longest flight silliest idea etc... just general Mayhem
stuff, and we will invent some organised more sane sailing events etc nearer the time....
unless you have any better ideas..

If there are any clubs that would like to put on a display, or any traders wishing to sponsor
'tea bags' for the weekend etc,  please drop us a line. [email protected]

I should be able to make it - complete with M series Futaba!

Martin, why don't you set up a poll at the beginning of this thread so that people can indicate if they will definitely attend, probably attend or won't attend. That way you will get some ideal of likely numbers.

(It's bound to be absolute mayhem anyway....)

I have just got clearance from her in the kitchen to attend the week-end ( also with Futaba M ) looks like the start of a good year I shall be at Skipsea for the second week in May  just got to make sure that with all this time away the dog doesn't forget who I am and take a chunk out of me when I do return home

Hi all.

I cannot believe that with 1128 members, all the interest is half a dozen replies.
Martin has a lot to do with this brilliant website, so surely the least we could do is let him know rough numbers of people attending

Quite right, but the best bet would be to set up a poll as well - Coming, Might Come, Can't/Won't Come!

I'dlove to come but Aberdeen is a long way away - this year not so much the frozen north but the wet and not so cold north!

I've a caravan but a big one - a long tow for a weekend and not finishing work till 18:00

I wonder if public transport id possible - with a tent on me back but bit tricky to bring a boat or two!

1. Aberdeen -> Crewe -> Nuneaton -> Leicester -> Kettering or 2. Aberdeen -> Crewe -> Derby -> Kettering

Maybe do-able if weekend trains fit: be big trouble if am late for 08:30 on the Monday morning!

Local advice welcome - either end!!

I would have enjoyed the weekend with you, but am helping with Merstham the weekend before, organising the Alfold charity show the weekend after and have a wedding to pay for in July, the pot is nearly empty. Do it again next year and I'll do my utmost to be there. The rest of you enjoy yourselves, hope it's a good weekend.

Sorry, I cannot make it.

It is not just that it is a long way from France but I am already over committed this year with visits to the UK for a wedding, a graduation and a wake. We also have to go the Caribean to welcome a new grandchild.

Ah, it's a hard life!

I do hope somebody will take lots and lots of photos.

Hello,
I will be there and sailing, IF, the water in the Lake is deep enough for my Schooner !!!.
She needs about 30 inches depth of water to sail in, contacted the Wicksteed Boat Club about the water depth, but not got any reply back yet - - - heres hoping !!.

Hi,
the water is about 80m x 30m x 1m deep crystal clear so subs will be ok to sail.
There is no obstructions in the water other than marker bouys.

hi,
So two months from the event we now have FIFTEEN  people attending. Six from  the Northampton club
Do any clubs want to exhibit ?
Do any traders want to sail a new model that they have to show us?
The venue is PERFECT for model boating, There is plenty to do for the rest of the family,
Food is good, and the town for shopping (heaven forbid) is five minutes away
Martin how many have emailed for entry tickets
see you at Mayhem weekend

Right .....

I'm going over to Wicksteed this weekend to check the lay of the land.
Apparently the lake area is waterlogged and a couple of people have informed us that Wicksteed are not taking camping bookings.
I'll update everyone if / when this changes.

So.....

1. Please could any cubs or individuals who would like to put on a display advise us by Email. We are currently unsure about marquee arrangements but if we have an idea of the displays / sizes then we can make appropriate arrangements.

2. Parking discount tickets are being confirmed this week. I'll email them out once confirmed.

3. We still have room for sponsorship or events, prizes, competitions, please email us.

3. Anyone building a "Springer tug"???? - http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=3471.0 (http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=3471.0)

Hi Brian (Other!)

Park open at 10:30AM
Public allowed by the lake but were going to cordon off one side of the lake Mayheme rs / Modellers and the other side viewing public.
Public that want to 'have a go' will be "invited" in - we'll put some sort of notice up to that effect.

I shall be coming Martin. I'm working like mad to finish Red Pelican (formerly AZIZ). Can I have a parking voucher please.
Also, my wife would come along if the DOG was allowed in the grounds. I have scoured the Wickstead site and do not know if they are permitted at all. Can you help.
Not sure wether to stay overnight. The 'Comfort Inn' was mentioned. Can anyone say wether they allow dogs?  (not me, you understand, but my little whippet)

Cheers...Ken

Thank you Martin for the voucher. I've taken two copies for the weekend in case they charge me twice for parking.   ;D

Regarding the 'Comfort Inn, can any one please point me to their web site, so that I may book Saturday night. Don't want to miss the    Ging Gang Gooly,  and their might be pint in it.

I still have further work ( self created) on the boat as, I have scratched her bottom and have been re-sanding and spraying  ( ooh er !!).    All this for rushing to get her finished, and I haven't even started the 'Springer'

There are several sites you can book the Comfort Inn this is one: http://www.activereservations.com/hotel/brochure/en/218698?subid=PPCGH1hn218698en

My booking is costing £55 B&B. I chose this hotel as it seems to be within walking distance of Wicksteed - about a mile. Don't want to have to drive back in the evening.

Hi,
There will be some tables and tent space.
If you have room bring your own tables or gazeebo just in case (you can never have enough).
The pool is approx 4ft deep so lifeboat depth no problem.
To be honest the water is so large that for the mass sail we could use all of the frequencies availiable to us.

Where can we leave our cars with their precious cargo overnight please Martin.

I will be in the Hotel down the road, but am a bit wary of parking in their place (or nearest road !!) with my 'fleet' in the boot.

Do you think we could park in the camping section  (or close too) where there are people all night.  Mind you, having a jug of ale and companions, alters one's perspective   ;D

Bugg er!  Damm & Blast >:( >:( >:(

Just "finalizing " my Springer tug and have just found out that my brand new Hitec 6 channel 40Mhz radio that (I've been saving  for my 'next' project) - DOEN'T WORK!!!

Brand new in it's box and dead as a Dodo.
Trouble is, it's several months old and I have no idea where the receipt is.
ARRRRRRRRRrrrrrg!

I'll have to send this one back for repair under warranty but that means I'm screwed to buy a replacement for this weekend..... can i tempt any of you guys into taking out an advert / sponsorship on Model Boat Mayhem for say the price of a replacement radio?!?!  ::)

Yes, I've checked the batteries, switch, servos and tried a different receiver, looks like the Transmitter is screwed.

Off down the local model shop tomorrow to have a very fraught conversation  :-X
Grrrrrrrrrrrrr!

This'll teach me to test thing straight after I buy them!

Sorry to hear your problem, Martin.

It is good advice to try out new items very soon after purchase. Your rights differ depending on when you find the fault.

If you discover a fault immediately (first use after a few days) you are entitled to "reject the goods as not satisfying the contract", the contract being that you paid for goods that were correct in all respects. You are then entitled to a full refund of the purchase price.

However, if you only discover a fault some time later (when you could have/should have tested the goods) then you are only entitled to a repair.

That is the bottom line. Of course you may be able to negotiate for a replacement etc.

As regards lost receipts. Clearly a receipt is the best form of proof of purchase but it is not the only proof. If push comes to shove the civil courts will accept your word of mouth.

Roger in France.

I went to the Weetabix factory today...

"What's that got to do with the Mayhem weekend?" I hear you ask.

Well, it is the other side of the A14 from Wicksteed Park. I know it was a week day morning and that does tend to make it worse but if you are travelling south down the M6  to get to Kettering via the A14 be prepared for delays and queues trying to exit the motorway there. Also the two lanes going down the slip road merge after the traffic lights at the bottom. The right hand lane merges into the left. Best to allow an extra 15min if you are going that way on Saturday morning. A14 is a popular East-West HGV route so might still be heavy on a saturday.

Hope that bit of information eases your journey :)

On a down note, thanks to a combination of bad weather (I have to spray outside as I have no garden workshop/garage to work in) and family commitments I haven't got any boats ready and my springer build has completely ground to a halt (needs painting and testing) so I won't be there this weekend. I hope there will be another national meeting later in the summer or maybe some regional get togethers if there are any club's will let us use their water.

regards
Clive

I'll be there Sunday, brolly 'n' all.... Though having said that, the forecast for here today was dismal - but I ended up with a very enjoyable afternoon's sailing.

'Bring... sense of humour?' Stavros is coming! You'll need one! :P

Ahem!  Moving on now....

We have plenty of shelter for both days so we should not get too wet if it rains in Sunday. Wicksteed have kindly offered to put up their Wicky Marquee for us as well so we should be OK, i'll buy more Tea + Beer !!!  ;D

What about a Live Webcam so us folks who cant attend can watch the action (sort of voyeurs)

Any way to all who are attending, I hope you have the time of your lives.

Have a splash for me.

Good idea about the webcam, well seriously look into that.............. anyone who to do a webcam from a laptop with no land line?  ???

In the mean time here are comments from our first attempt at a Mayhem Gathering, regatta, sail off, club meet, virtual boat club..... Mayhem Show Supporters  (http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=4280.0)

Well the rain didn't dampen anyone spirits today.... at the rain tried really hard !
We were soaked through within minutes of getting out the car but several dozen people turned up anyway... even all the way from the Wales &  Isle of White! Now that's true dedication. Even during the heaviest showers, there was always at least 6 boats on the water including 2 very water resistant Sea Wind yachts, the Springer tugs pushing everything around and even playing football!!. The weather was lifted with lots of roaring laughter and jeers that rang out across the lake.

I too second Bradders thoughts, what a wonderful bunch of people that turned up! Bradders is holiday for a week now but we'll sit down when he gets back and spin a yarn or 10 together when get the photos sorted.

Highlights of the weekend for us, (in no particular order)  - turnout, smiling faces, support from the trade, the variety of vessels, wonderful atmosphere, Wicksteed Park management, Mrs Bradders & Mrs Mayhem supplying constant the free tea and coffee the whole weekend, Hanna and her Dad, Phil Abbot of the Blackheath club, the Springer Tug display team, Clin Bishop, the 'Other' Brian, Martinno1fan, Ghost in the shell (who sailed all day, well into the evening despite several lagers!) Wolf of Deans Marine (what a trooper), the Mini-Z boats, Wicksteed & Northampton clubs (what great hosts & in particular Martin who couldn't have been more helpful), the patients of everyone with the schedule (which was 'shot to hell' before we even got it going!) my son Kirk who put the whole Shane steering course out (but had no idea who, what, or why I was yelling at him but kept his temper anyway), the green trolley, the generosity of everyone that brought tea, coffee, cups etc, Guy Badley & family, Poll, Tugboat Kenny (and his amazing demonstration of sinking offshore support ship), the RNLI "display team", The Model Hovercraft Association, Richard (for lending us his PA), Ian (we all wish your Mrs well with your very imminent birth!) , Jackie, Laurie, Ron, John, Mark, Jag, Lucy & Paul…… and this is just the start of the list!!!

A SPECIAL BIG THANKS goes  Bradders, who I can honestly say, without his constant encouragement, cajoling, temper tantrums, barrage of insults, deep pockets, vision and organization skills – the event would not have happened.

THANKS EVERYONE, IT WAS BRILLIANT!
