Following plans i aquired a few years ago ..I've commisioned a fishing vessel that representative of local inshore/off-shore fishing vessels usally found here on the East Coast of Canada..
The formers had to be re-drawn because the print is twisted ..
This is my second attempt at plank on frame boat building ..
30" overall,8in beam,4 in draft ..
planks are 1.5 mm Basswood laid on 1/8 commercially avaliable oak and birch veneered plywood..nailed down with stick pin's and water proof(resistant) wood glue
She will sport a 2in 3-blade prop ..driven direct with a 550 type can motor in direct drive yet to be installed
Progress so far

Thank You ok2
A little more progress..
I solved my rear access issue ..
I remember seeing these boat's come in with a deck load ..on the aft deck knee walls could be staked into pockets in the deck..additional boards could be put in to make bins to separate by-catch and more valuable species. These bin's also kept the catch from shifting around the deck, while its being sorted, cut and bled before storage in the hold
So ..essentially I'll build up a permanent bin in the rear deck ..and the floor of this bin will be remove able..it gives me access and also aid in keeping water out of the hull..because it well only be a small thickness and just a perimeter fence the deck wont look like it has a hatch cover on the aft deck..
forward of that is a smaller hatch which in essence is where the fish are put down in the hold..
Then ..Square peg, round hole ..I have some Basswood square stock That has to get put in round holes to form the gunnel's around my boat..
To do this and get semi-acceptable results ,,I took a piece of brass tube that was the O.D. as the wood is square..Chucked the brass tube in my drill press ..then took the bass wood cut to an appropriate length ..stood it up ..Eye-balled center and pressed the brass tube down to a desired depth ..pull out the peg ..a little snip with a hobby knife ..i got a rounded end on my square peg..

I don't know if this is of any help, but something I did to provide a water tight acces was to make a "shoe box cover" for the open point. You could put anything in or on the cover (dead fish?) to discize it. You then end up with an easily removable water tight cover.
John
-
Now that works ..
The rear deck on mine is a problem .mainly because of access ..once those knee walls go up ..i can make a cover to put down inside with a couple bin's ..some fish etc..only the bottom well be at deck level, the knee walls will be about 3/4in high..The gunnel's from are 1 1/2 inch high ..there's an additional 1 1/2 inch respectively of free-board in that area..so 3in roughly ..that's a good swell to have this little craft in ,I think..
my main concern was water coming through the scuppers and washing down under a deck plate into the hull....
that's the plan ...However..should that not work as i hope ..what you have there will be a great solution to this problem ..
.fortunately though the actual hatch is designed in principal the same as what you have there ..
Thank you ..and what ship is that ..paint looks great...smooth .. :-))
-
That bin area ..on the aft deck ,that I intend to build ..according to my Dad ..its refered to as a " checker board" you can insert planks to build up bins and such ..looks like a Checker board when its done
-
The vessel the aft crate is on is my Smit Nederland tug:

Glad you found the idea useful.

Yes thanks again :-))
A little progress today..
stern gunnel's were cut out of pine block,I cheated i guess,a little thicker but this area is built up to take the abuse ,,the pegs were put in and the skin put on ..have to cut the scuppers yet..
I included a shot of the plans so theres a general idea what I'm supposed to end up with..Its the only page I have..the text and stuff are AWOL..didn't come with them ..so in some respects I'm flying by the seat of my pants
...Also, if anyone is interested a start point to go find them .I haven't seen these since I purchased them ..

What did you have in mind to finish the hull? I mention this before you get to far into the build.
John
-
Well ..Its obvious that even after i redid the formers i had some minor issues..shims here and there to set the planks on..she's a rough looking unit ,LOl,,more a kin to the real one out the road that's been rotted out, stripped and discarded.. :-)..I cut myself a little more slack in this build ..more so than i did the first one that got flung across the basement..then cycled through the wood stove .. :-))..no stress eh!..Big thing for me right now is just to get a feel ,rhythm, confidence by completing a working unit ..the next one well be better..i hope ..
Given its only 1.5mm Basswood I'll clean up any corners or high spots a little to start
I intend to first use fiberglass resin inside and out ..this well add strength..then its bondo and glazing putty to fare the hull..this is where the pins come in ,I didn't recess the heads..so they will offer indicator so i don't get into the wood..
I had also considered using FG chop on the interior ..for additional strength
Your thoughts..dont leave me hangin ok2
-
I think most of us have been there and done the discard route. Don't worry, the more you do the easier it gets.
I agree with the fiberglass and resin, glazing putty idea, however, instead of chop inside I use fiberglass cloth on the outside. Get a really light weight glass cloth and cut it a little larger than the hull. Slit it fore and aft for the bow and skeg. Then lay it over the hull (being upside down of course). The I mix a batch of resin and use a cheap foam roller (available in the paint section at CTC) and starting at the keel, roll the resin onto the cloth. Work down wards from the keel instead of length wise. This should leave you with a pretty smooth surface. Paint/pour resin on the inside and get it into all the nooks an crannies. I don't use any chop here. When its all hardened I give the outside a quick sand to take of the sharp bits, if any, then lay on auto body icing. Sand. Repeat as necessary, prime and paint. It seems to work easier for me than trying to get chop and such inside the hull. You also have a smooth place inside the hull to add all your running bits.
John
-
I had considered cloth on the outside....Yes, I'll stick to what I know and keep using it on the outside...Thanks .
Part of me was hoping that could get a cleaner surface sooner without the cloth on the outside....which is why I thought about the chop on the inside ..I still get strenght..
No easy way around some things i guess..

If you use the roller it'll make a nice clean surface on the outside. Most people use a brush and thats where things start to bind up.
John
-
The Brush....Im guilty :embarrassed:...
I'll give the roller a go... :-))
-
I've just had this done on my boat.
We found that the cheap foam rollers fall apart VERY quick and become useless in no time at all. The best thing to use is a metal roller as pressure can be applied nicely to squeeze out the surplus resin.
Your troubles start when you cover the hardened glassed cloth. Please ensure the covering liquid is very runny and thinned out or else you will enter the problem zone that I now find myself in. If it hardens off before it is flat then you will have a nightmare on the 'Sanding scene'
Hope this helps
Ken
-
tug Kenny: I must be using a different type of foam on my rollers I guess, because I've never had a problem with them falling apart. I just did two Springers this winter with the method described and they came off great.......with one foam roller. I do agree the resin is to be runny, however, what we get here in our Canadian Tire Stores is very runny and perfect for the job.
John
-
I was wondering about the foam roller ..I'm thinking they are the lil' yellow handle disposable rollers
I have a quart of the Bondo FG resin..yeah really thin..and boils off fast with the recommended 10drops that the instructions call for ..Im thinking that maybe 6-8 drops would give me some more extra work time ..
I don't want get into thinning ..the right ratio of acetone to resin to kicker.. is something I'm lost on ..I suck royally at math..its why I use mostly metric measuring tools when I can ..3/32 + 5/64 ya right ..I just lost a half a day ...
-
Just thought I'd include a picture of the paint rollers I've used with success. I got them from the paint section of Canadian Tire.
John

thanks..

Hi again ..
Any Idea on what/where FG cloth I should get/use..
-
A hull...
Her future skipper,my toughest critic,Has taken inventory of her design and workman ship and thinks "its good Daddy"..then wants to launch it in the domestic test facility(bathtub)..she's learning
The hull is currently in the shed sporting her first coat of resin..

Hi again ..
Any Idea on what/where FG cloth I should get/use..
G'day
I got my FG cloth from my local hobby store. They carry a very fine grade that the flyers use.
John
-
Ok ..now i got a bearing ..Thank you ..3/4oz cloth...Its beats the 8oz stuff at the hardware store ..
-
Well..I searched everywhere in this neck of the woods...Best I could get was 1oz fiber chop cloth..no weaved cloth..I hear the whine of a sander in my near future..
At any rate I did get the rollers..
Right now ..neck deep in bondo...
-
Well..I searched everywhere in this neck of the woods...Best I could get was 1oz fiber chop cloth..no weaved cloth.
You could try Nappy liners. Cheaper and just as strong.
I hear the whine of a sander in my near future
Beware of the dust as it gets in the lungs and stays there forever. Your better off using slow sanding with paper while still protecting your breathing tubes with a GOOD mask.
Hope this helps

Or how about your wife's panty hose..........for the boat, not for you.
John

Well..from a gelatinous ooze to a hull ..smoother than a baby bottom ..
So to recap..
2coats resin on the wood
putty and filler with bondo..sanded
1 coat resin ,chop cloth applied..light sanding
2 more coats with light sanding in between
final coat resin with baby powder mixed..then added the kicker as prescribed
allowed to set ..
Sanded smooth..
I'll never use FG resin with a brush again ..a roller is the only way to go :-))
a few minor pits here and there nothing a little glazing putty wont fix..
now just have to wait for the running hardware..In the mean time i'll busy with the superstructure..

Glad everything worked out for you . The hull looks great :-))
Now on to the neat detailing part.

Got the wheel house assembled..
Going py picture's and those drawings ..well i had to draw my own idea of what goes where..7 windows in the wheel house ..7 windows it is ..though I dont know of to many with curved glass! ...
A slight recess there it'll be flat ..Pimp my Boat?
With it in place ..she's taking on a being of her own ..seems to have a certain brow to her..
The roof and visor is next ..no fly deck or any of that noise. Its an extra sail ..and rarely seen on anything other than pleasure craft around here ..
The mast ..and outriggers with paravane fish..Hmmmm(http://www.bloodydecks.com/forums/images/smilies/Emoticon_Potty_Time.gif)

Coming along well. In the water by summer then.

After a long Hiatus..Im back in dry dock.fitted out with a rudder and steering servo..
Skeg is 1/4 key stock ..drilled for recessed screws..epoxy on the screws and wood then fastened together to the keel ..should keep the water out..
There's a brass bushing I Tapped in to the end to support the rudder
Rudder consist of brass..rod,.065 plate and some angle soldered together
Tiller arm is a Great Planes shaft collar filed to expose the brass and soldered to a piece of flat bar
A steering servo of the Futaba Flavor..the mount is some aluminium scrap I scored at work
servo is bolted to the mount ..the mount is bolted to the frame

The vessel's coming along well. You may want to keep an eye on the rudder when you go t water. You may find it to be a tad small, and the vessel will take quite a bit to turn. Experience will tell. I had to enlarge the rudder on one of my tugs to get e decent turning circle out of it. Nothing to panic about, but something to keep in mind.
John
-
You think?
looking at the drawing I thought it to be to large?
But now that you mention it ..I sized it up again ..theres a little room to add a flap on the side of the shaft facing the propellor...
LOl...enginners dont make mistakes .....they make revisions !!!!
-
Yeh....."revisions"......you've got that right :-)) Worked in a couple of power plants under construction. All kinds of design errors along the way. We had books of "Engineering Change Notations"......(MISTAKES!)... that had to be corrected. I guess the euphemistic term sounded better on their resume.
Anyway, here's the change I did to the rudder on my tug to get more area. Worked well, and made an easy change.
John

moving along
Made a roof,built a hatch with a lid,built up a mast,cut the scuppers
pondering where the radar goes....
The mast is a turning point ..the rungs are a little heavy and of scale ..buts its all i had ..
The shaft is two pieces of brake line..a few bits of brass..some ol .015 shim stock and a few other bits that lay in the bottom of the my box
At this point ..Im pondering batteries..the mast for what it is has some weight to it..it;s CG is about 7inches up ..Im thinking it may make the boat unstable..
The motor is 12v..lead acid due to geometry is out if the question ..12v NimH ?? a pair?..with a lighter battery(s) i can put additional ballast low in the keel..

More saw dust,and chippin ..
Made a muffler out of some brass tube and shim stock..Cleaned it up using my hand held lathe..
Made a radar ..not pictured is an ol' Futaba servo hacked a bit to make it run under the roof
Made two work lights ..awaiting a little clear styrene to seal them up ..
Built a boom for the mast ..again ..some bits of brass and shim stock
Blew two holes in the bow bulkwarks to allow her to be tied up..need to make the cleats..

Good job! On your next POB consider steam forming the planks, and avoid terminating planks on bulkheads that are located in areas of extreme curvature. I don't know how wide the planks are but they appear to be too much so. 1.5mm thickness is hard enough to form to the bulkheads at the proper width, which I suggest for a hull this size would be about 5mm. With a properly planked hull you won't need to finish the form with resin on the exterior, Instead, give the hull an inimitable "wooden" look by simply painting. You can just thickly paint the interior with poly resin for waterproofing. Over the exterior I use flat acryllic exterior house paint, with satin polyurethane over it for a "flat" weather resistant finish.
Having said all that, let me remark that the job you did scratchbuilding that little sound generator, the one that sounds "It's good daddy", is perfect work, and requires no improvement. ;)
-
Actually ..the basswood was quite soft and followed the curvature well..
I have considered building a steamer out of 8in drain pipe an electric kettle and so on ..But im extremely limited for room in my little nook between a fridge and washer/dryer..
The Exterior paints by and large can offer an infinite array of colors..I hadnt really a clue where to start on that untill now ..Thanks for that info..
I have, and can air brush ..A single action Pasche H ,what ratio of paint to thinner?
The little sound module...well to assemble, was rather cheap but very labour intensive :}.... Im adding practicle modules such as Basic fileing ,gluing wood, sanding wood,
and Visual tutorials on soldering, cutting, measuring, plus basic electrical....She has her own little chair..and a little spot where she can practice away .. :-))

I don't know about the air brush. The paint i use is the premium grade of Behr brand exterior acrillic . It's very heavily pigmented and I thin it one to one with water, makes it flow and cover beautifully. If you have Home Depot up there, they carry it.
The module: Adorable!

Puttering and pondering along..
Applied resin to the interior
Made some doors from styrene,an anchor winch,a ladder from 14g house hold wire
a few more bits and tweaks,,touch of sanding she will be ready for paint..
One thing thats boggling me right now is the anchor stowage on the bow..
Paper shows just two pieces of rod glued down with a wooden anchor glued to it..
I intend to use shown anchor ....However ..the aforementioned anchor stowage arrangement simply wont do..
I had been considering the anchor in a near vertical position by manufacturing a stowage out of brass bit's and shim stock..just so the chain end was just above the bow ..anchor would be in a freefall position
Any Ideas out there ?

A little further to the end..
Revisited the muffler ..added a base..
I had a set of buttons from a kids toy in the very bottom ,lost and forgotten corner of my bin ..gave them a toss in the garbage ..a couple hours later ..I went and retrieved them post hast ...one is a spot light the other well become a radar dome of sorts.. still in the works
Adding "quarter guards"( I think that's the right term)....Basswood ..Cleaned the hull up with Varosol, scored some lines using a compass ,Contact cement and clamp ...
Cleaned up the keel around the stuffing tube ..I'm completely out of Bondo..which was a good thing ..Fiberglass resin and baby powder ..I made up a putty much like peanut butter..added kicker ..putty knifed it out and sanded smooth

Thanks for the comments...they are appreciated..
Kid you not at one point I was ready to throw this in the wood stove..I was having alot of trouble with the paint vs wood grain ..
But its essentially not mine...frustrated..turned of the lights..sucked on a beer(s),had a smoke and went to bed ..the next afternoon was a different story..it fell into place
Paint on keel is Tremclad satin black
white is Rustoleum
deck and quarter guards are Behr Flat exterior..$5 bucks for a tester can..that would do a Mister Darby over twice, the whole boat...
ran it through the air brush thinned out with blue windshield washer fluid..about 6-2 ,paint to thinner..On a Passche H using a #5 tip and nozzle
Either Brave or Stupid ..never used this mixture before...but it went on smooth..set up nice ..
My thoughts are to hit it with some satin clear next..
Any one know of a clear coat ,acrylic..water Based? that can be run through a air brush?
Ive learned my lesson ..struggling with spray bombs, rattle cans, dollar store brushes is 20fold the aggravation of setting up /using/and cleaning an air brush..cheaper to ..95% of the paint went on the model instead of a drop cloth or back splash..It also has the full support of the Admiralty..as it doesn't produce fumes

Over the Behr white acryllic on my hull I used oil based Minwax satin polyurethane, the floor grade, also from Home Depot. About $40US per gallon. I don't know how you would thin it for an airbrush, but I'm sure it's do-able and it makes a beautiful durable finish.

Plugging along ..
Primer on Electrics in ...
Have some small toggle switches comming to get rid of the slidder switch ..the reciever and switches will be in the hatch..

Actually...its a Pro-Boat..bought it new,.probably the same thing..
.
I prefer Mtroniks, but this was in the box doing nothing

Thanks cosmo..poking around the store ..I found myself in one of those situations that makes a guy go Hmmmm...
I'm gonna test the Behr Flat exterior mixed with Varathane water based Satin clear coat..
See how that goes...I just may end up shooting top coat of Satin Clear..
Paint on the wheel house..I'm missing something here...this boat is more and more looking like it came out of a Dick Tracy flick.
So I Picked up some light grey today ..gonna do the decks, and wheel house roof ..hopefully it adds some contrast...The solid colors are nice ..but I do think some neutrality is in order.
I guess ..maybe.. I'm half smart and plenty dangerous <*<

Paint : Re-Visted
Shot the decks and wheel house with some light gray, Behr exterior, flat paint and primer, blown on with my Passche H with #5 tip thinned with Windsheild wash ,running the gun at 75psi.
still have some white to shoot ,but as i was shoting grey, shoot everything
General mock up, plans call for a couple windows in the aft part of the cabin..found these little picture frames at the dollar store..gold colored ,,made of some kind of metal .

Chugging Along..
Got to making the bouys,Some beads ,wooden balls, brass stock ..paint..
a fore mast. The VHF antenna, saw that in Pats Baywatch boat build,I soldered brass to get it ..then realised after i had styrene that could have done the same ,waste of blood pressure. the antena on the other side is just brass wire and a small piece of brass tube
Radome is a "Start Black Copy" button out of an old printer milled to resemble something of that nature.
The muffler didnt grow on me so I fabbed a new one, with an air intake next to it.
Started making a rear deck ..a larger winch will be here with a little netting
to smaller spools will also grace the deck, as well as a bait table.

Finished the mast.
Anometer is some beads, brass wire and tube,
GPS is one of those screw cap/plugs you get with assemble yourself furniture
Copy button/ Radome installed,
And antenna's..

All that hard work on the hull preparation has certainly paid off, it's a magnificent finish :-)) The quality of the fittings is also very impressive, in fact, you're making a wonderful job of the whole project. I'm looking forward to pictures of further progress.
Peter.

Thanks for the comments!!!
I must be mad ..1mm x 1.5mm leds wired for sound... used armature wire to make the leads. .013 wire through .020 holes in the bulkheads.. Im blind now..
Lights look OK.I should have played with the resistor value's to dim some ..but If it's loud ,bright or shiney ..kids want in ..

No pics ..
but
Domestic Test Facility test's where commenced.
Proboat 50amp ESC..Johnson 550"ish Motor,Dumas 1.75dia prop(three feather) ...smoked a 15amp fuse..in 30 seconds full throttle
....Hmmmmm..Theres probably more to gear reduction than I gave credit to ..
replaced with a 25amp ..appears OK..
Still to much for a pair Of 3800Mah Nimh flat packs.
way reduced run time I suspect.
Lessons learned
-
....................25 MPS........Hmmmmmmm. I think I'd be checking for some binding in the drive/prop shaft system.
John
-
Thanks ..I Checked that out. I should note to that the fuses are Power Fist brand from Princess Auto.
Its smooth..with a little end play..Maybe to much end play? I should maybe put a thrust washer out board ?
I ran the same motor ,battery config on a 40mm prop. no problems on another boat..
Pondering again ..maybe a 1.5prop, Or even another 1.75 prop..with less pitch ..
The Dumas I think has a pitch of 2.
Your Intial suspecions on the rudder are proving correct though. Im now thinking its to small.
However..I cant make it taller as I wont be able to remove it or put it back in ...So I intend to add a piece to the opposite side towards the prop on the rudder shaft.
This should catch more prop wash and aid in turning. The rudder will be facing more than 2/3's of the prop when turned vs the 50% of the prop that the rudder currently gets

I use a fair bit of Princess Auto stuff too, but sometimes the quailty is not always at the top. I wonder if they are blowing too early?
your end play should be minimal, not tight, but not sloppy either. All the forward thrust should be taken by the thrust bearing and not the motor.
Since you are using the "domestic test facility" you are running the vessel at stall when you're taking your readings. This will give a much higher amperage reading than if the vessel was underway.
Its turning out nice though no the less. Just a little teething problem we all go through.
Good idea to try and extend the rudder a little towards the prop. It'll give it a more balanced effect too, that will make it easier on the servo.
John

Theres enough end play to suggest its there..and thats it.
Thanks ..
I was not aware that Stalling a boat would require more power than underway..I just assumed thrust was thrust..
-
What kind of Johnson ''550'' do you have?
I got two from Princess Auto that draw less than 3 amps (each) running 2" props. The dual-shaft ones with the pre-attached leads. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v323/DestructorBot/Tug%20Build%20number%202/P1000069.jpg
-
Its just two I got of the shelf there. Other than Johnson theres no other marking. It has an internal fan.
Theres endplay ..But im also thinking that the dog bone may be to tight.I'll adjust it .
This type of motor may be suffering from underloading voltage wise.not enough voltage to sustain the load, just means it draws more current. Its quite hard on them. A higher voltage would require less current..

Actually ...ahh..no ..I only saw this set on E-Bay once and never saw them again ..There are similar set's on E-bay..worth a look I guess
-
where can i get a copy of these plans?
-
Wish I could tell you .
I havent seen another set,and as I said I carved mine up building this boat.
Ebay Canada or USA is your best bet, there have been similar plans avaliable but like the ones I "had"
-
Try eBay at http://www.ebay.com/sch/vergina123/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_from=&_ipg=&_trksid=p3686 (http://www.ebay.com/sch/vergina123/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_from=&_ipg=&_trksid=p3686) . All plans on CD (print them at Kinko's). I built their bunker boat, a menhaden fishing trawler.
Another good source: free plans from http://www.freeshipplans.com/ (http://www.freeshipplans.com/) .
-
MC, did the plans originally call for a flying bridge?
I believe this was offered as a plan with a model boating magazine from the US. I remember a buildup in whatever magazine it was with a black and yellow hull.
EDIT: perhaps it was the Tara Dawn http://aamstorestaging.cirrata.com/boats/plans/scale/tara-dawn-fishing-trawler.html (http://aamstorestaging.cirrata.com/boats/plans/scale/tara-dawn-fishing-trawler.html), even though it has a white hull. {:-{
