Ok,so I'm not a newbie on here, but this will be my first ever build from scratch,so in that sense,I'm very much a beginner. :embarrassed:
I've decided to try something very simple to begin with,as my skills aren't exactly what you could call brilliant, and although it's not a GG plan,I think it's quite similar in style.
Now as I'm also a big fan of the lamented Bob Symes classic Model World series,I'd thought of doing the Sea Rider too. However I came across an article and set of plans that really peaked my interest, and I thought to myself, why not try that,so here I am starting off building a model of a Vosper Corvette by Clive Halliwell.(Oct 2009 MMI)
Now I know that you can buy a kit of this vessel, and that it'll look the bees knees, but my finances won't stretch to buying one of them, not only that but I'd be afraid of messing it up during the build. Can you imagine the expletives that would issue forth if I messed it up,coupled with the fact that my painting isn't very good,it would turn out to be a waste of money.
This way, even if I make a mess of it,I won't have broken the bank ballance doing it.
I bought all the necessary balsa,propshaft/prop,rudder assy & paint for just over £40.00. I've still to purchace the weapons suite and ships boats/davits though. As it's 1/96th scale, can anyone give me some ideas as to suppliers of weapons in this scale.
Hull base started, just waiting for the glue to dry.

-
First hull side on. Won't be able to do any more today though.
-
The motor and propshaft and rudder have been installed, though the shaft has yet to be epoxied into place. Next will be the building and fitting of the servo mounts, then I can fit the other side of the hull into place. I'll post photo's of each stage as it's completed.
-
Second side now on,and motor and propshaft epoxied into place.

Getting there slowly but surely.

Hey, that looks great! She will be a beauty on the water, one can tell already.
Good luck!
Hama.
-
Thanks for that Hama, and even though I was out sailing most of the afternoon,I've now got all the decks finished, and the aft superstructure fitted to the rear deck. I'll post some more pics later tonight.
-
As promised, here are the current photo's of the build.

Well that don't look too bad at all! :-))
-
I would say that that was the easy part,now comes the hard part......fitting her out. I've built and fitted the bridge structure,but something doesn't seem quite right about it,so I'm probably going to have to re-do it. {:-{
One thing I've found out,is that there are very few photographs of this corvette, which make detailing her a bit of a swine. I can only find the one view of her, which is taken from the water looking upwards to her starboard side. Does anyone know where I can find an aerial shot of her,so that i can find out details of her deck layout please? :-)
-
Hi, not having the plan, which Vosper corvette is this you are making ?
-
You can get modern 1/96 scale fittings from sirmar: http://www.sirmarmodelships.com.
Dicky its the modern Vosper Corvette similar to the small Deans one.
Bob
-
Yup,it's the Vosper MkIII Corvette, the version with the twin mounted HA 4" gun turret and 2x 40mm bofors. Max speed 23kts.
-
The original bridge,as per the plans, though I wasn't too happy with it.
The bridge as it is now, having found a semi-decent photo of her.

I've got most of the mainmast built now,but don't expect it to be overly realistic. :embarrassed:
I also got my ships weapons through today from John Smith, and crackers they are too. Just positioned roughly on the hull, just to get some idea of how she'll look. ok2
(http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l4/xuihpilli/DSCN1444.jpg)
-
Current position, complete with home made funnel,(not too bad for a first attempt),I know that it's not quite the correct shape, but it'll do me.
-
looking good O0
-
Thanks for that bear, but please don't expect the super-detailing finish that we're all so envious of. Wood is not my medium,so the fact that this has turned out so well thus far is amazing,I've really surprised myself here. The next headache is going to be the tripod rear radar mast.......EEK
I've got some ships boats and derriks coming from Reade's models, though I wish that I'd ordered some life rafts whilst I'd been shopping online. I'm not too sure what to make them from though, any ideas anyone?
-
:embarrassed: nice to see Dreadstar that you have Fosters in Glasgow......... {-) %% - Derek
-
Ok,so I've still to cross brace the mast legs, but I think it'll do.
The first of the aerials for this boat.

Class workmanship Dreadstar :-))
-
A quick blast with the paint can, just to see how it'll look,(using Humbrol Sea Grey).
The rear Radar mast.
-
I would prep the hull with 'sanding sealer' or the like first, gives a much better finish....
-
ARRRRGH Martin NO ! %) :o :o :o :o not on the Humbrol painted bits. Sanding sealer only on bare wood.
-
Since I don't have much in the way of free cash at the moment,I'll be sealing the hull with multiple coats of yacht varnish, both inside and out. That's what I sealed the RBR speedboat with after all,and that seemed to work out alright.Ok,so it's not as good as resin would be,but we have to cut our coat according to our cloth. ok2
The good thing is,that there are 3 separate deck sections, which can all be painted away from the hull, which will be getting dealt with separately.
-
ARRRRGH Martin NO ! %) :o :o :o :o not on the Humbrol painted bits. Sanding sealer only on bare wood.
Sorry, yes, that's what I meant. :embarrassed:
-
The hull has had it's 1st coat of varnish, which was rubbed down once it had dried, she's just had her 2nd coat of varnish applied. The bridge window frames have been cut out and stuck in place,so it's looking a bit more like the thing now. I haven't had much in the way of time to work on her today, but hopefully tomorrow will see some more progress done to her,and I can post up some more pics. ;)
-
:embarrassed: nice to see Dreadstar that you have Fosters in Glasgow......... {-) %% - Derek
Not wishing the Scots any harm, but Glasgow is about far enough away for me. Fosters >>:-( Horrible stuff O0
You're doing a good job Dreadstar, she looks great :-))
Peter.
-
Bit late now, but one of the most effective ways to seal a Balsa hull with this or hard chine construction is tissue paper and "Dope". The tissue is the same as used for covering toy Aeros and the method was given an excellent write up by FLJ in the Swordsman build log. Strengthens the structure too as well as giving a smooth base.
Regards Ian.
-
Not a lot done yet,but that's the bridge details done now I think. She's actually starting to look like a ship now.
-
I knew there had to be something useful in a can of Fosters {-)
it's looking great Dreadstar keep the pics coming

Some more detailing done, including finding another couple of aerials. Dropdown panels represented on aft superstructure. ok2

Didn't get a lot of time to work on the boat today, but still,I've made the liferaft holders & rafts, fitted some ammo lockers and the fancy deflector plate at the rear of the deckhouse. The hull has had it's 3rd coat of varnish now too.I'm still waiting on my ships boats and davits to come through the post.

Ok,she's had her tank test(re bath),which she passed with flying colours. All the R/C gear has been installed and tested, though trimming her weightwise is going to be a headache. At the moment, she has 2x 3700mAh 7.2V batteries, one either side of the motor, plus a 3700mAh 4.8V pack in her just to reach the boot top. I'll be running her on just the 4.8V pack,as the revs produced by the 7.2V pack, will power her like a fast electric. She's had her first coat of paint, but I've now run out of grey,so she's going to have to wait for her next coat. I'm charging up my camera battery just now,so that I can take some pics and vids of her afloat and sailing.
-
Had her at the pond today for a test sail, and all I can say is oops. Even at 4.8V,I had to turn my throttle EPA right down to almost nothing,or she'd try to act like a diving speedboat. This little thing is fast, faster that the Sovremenny RTR and that's saying something. I need to add some more lead to the stern compartment,to try and keep the bow up a bit. You'll see what i mean from the photo's and short vid.(I'm barely using any throttle here).
I'd to take out the stickpacks,as they were just too heavy,I replaced them with some lead sheet instead, but she still rolls like a pig. I may need to fit stabalisers to her to try and cut down on the roll.

Think a smaller motor might be a good idea.
Other than that, well done it looks ok. :-))
-
I've still to finish painting her,and fit the ships boats when they come through, but other than that I'm very happy with how she's turned out. :-))
The only reason that she's got the 540 motor in her,is that was all that I had laying around, and I wanted to keep my costs to a minimum. ok2

Bob
-
I got my 30mm plastic props through today, along with some lifebelts, both of which have been added to the ship. I should have my ships boats through either tomorrow or the next day, which will finally allow me to fill in that large gap on the upper deck. I've made up a stand for her, crude though it is,but it'll do me just now.
-
Ha the stand is fine just give it a coat of paint :-)) and your have it top draw. it's come out very well for a first effort. ok2
when i think back to my first effort ......well we shall not go there.... {-)
-
Thanks for that Tug. There's still a lot of work to be done to her,but at least I've got an operational boat. Some more short vids, and a few pics from today.

Thanks for the compliment Martin,it's much appreciated. That's the bulk of the work done now,it's just the details that I've still to finish, but I'm very happy with how she's turned out,and how she sails.
David.
-
I've just had a look and I thought that I had this magazine but no, has anyone got a copy I can borrow?
-
Martin
I have a copy complete with plan that I will bring along to Wicksteed (assuming I make it in one piece)
Doug
-
Have I piqued your interest in this wee ship then Martin? :-))
-
Getting there slowly but surely. The i.d. number is just temporary, until I can get some decent vynyl stickers for her.
-
I'm in the process of re-painting the lower hull,as I feel that the red I used was just too vibrant. I'm currently re-doing it in a brick red shade, which shouldn't look quite so garish to the eye. I've also built a rather crude anchor winch, which I know won't look anything like the real thing, but it should hopefully give the right impression of one. Like I said in an earlier post, this ship just needs to look the part, she doesn't need to be too accurate, which I don't think I'm capable of yet anyway.
-
I'm going to do away with the anchor winch and go with two capstan winches instead, which seems to make more logical sense than my idea.

Modified foredeck fittings, navigation lights recessed into leading edges of bridge, and 2nd coat of brick red paint below the waterline.

Well now, this is embarassing, filming your boat, when a duff connection leaves you powerless to aid your stricken boat. I've since replaced the ESC with another one,and she works ok again. I'll really need to change over all my connections to Deans plugs, rather than rely on the vagaries of the Tamiya plugs.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P8RZ34F3YV8 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P8RZ34F3YV8)
-
I definitely recommend Deans plugs O0. I had a similar problem to you about 4 years ago while sailing in the Lane Cove River, Sydney. The boat drifted way up stream for about an hour until my son was able to obtain a rowing boat from a friendly boat hirer. When the boatman saw the model, he would not charge my son for the rowing boat.
The problem proved to be a faulty connection, so I fitted Deans plugs in all my boats and have had no further trouble.
Your boat looks great on the water, Dreadstar, well done :-))
Peter.
-
Thank you Peter,I'm just glad that she's turned out so well. It would be interesting to see what sort of a job one of you pro's can make of it. Personally,I think my one looks sharper than the one in the article, but I may well be looking through rose coloured glasses, don't you. Still,at least I've proved to myself that I can build something that sails quite well. Now to decide, once she's been finished off, just what my next project will be,though I'm drawn to GG's semi-scale WWII U.S.S. Ripley. That might be quite a nice little ship to try next.
-
It would be interesting to see what sort of a job one of you pro's can make of it.
I'm no pro, Dreadstar, I'm still in the Intermediate class. The pros are the likes of Bluebird, DickyD, Tug Kenny and Bryan Young, to name just 4 of many on this forum. Some of the modellers on Mayhem have been involved in the hobby for much of their lives, whereas I only started in 2004 and I'm still on a steep learning curve.
It has been said that experience is not making the same mistake twice - if that's so, then I'm a slow learner :embarrassed:
The Ripley should make up into a nice little model. It was interesting to read Glynn Guest's comment that he tried to incorporate a prototypical "heel" into its design, but it proved to be too stable.
Peter.
-
I'm an even newer start than you then,I only started on boats last July. I'll admit, that the heel of the corvette caught me a bit off guard when I first tried her out,but she straightened out afterwards.A good few nervous moments I can tell you,but I've got a handle on her quirks now,and you can throw her into a tight turn without any worries,as you can see in the vids. I've now got the anchor chains in place. I've ordered up ladders, stantions, anchors, bollards, and ariels for her which will take about two weeks,in order to finish her off.
I was never really a large scale modeller, spending 36 years playing miniature wargames before moving onto R/C cars in 2006,then boats in 2009. Modelwise,I was scratchbuilding spaceships for Irregular Miniatures, over 100 different designs, but I burnt myself out doing it. A couple of examples:-(The first ship was only made for myself)

I really don't know how you lads have got the patience to do miles of handrails, what I've done so far,is beginning to drive me nuts.Still,I think that it's improving the look of my little corvette, especially now that I have all the remaining fitments that I need. :-))

I've finally cut out and painted her characteristic freeing ports, and added the warning labels to the sides of the guns. The 1/72nd figures aren't painted as well as I used to be able to do,middle aged eyesight and all that, but they don't look too out of scale. They'll do until I can get hold of some decent 1/96th figures. Anyway, here are some current pics of her prior to having the repainted sections varnished. I've still to rig the mast for the signal and pennant flags and buy a Ghana navy ensign for her, then I think I'll be finished.

Spot on mate :-)) :-)) :-)) it looks like it runs very well on the water O0

DOH.....A bit of a Homer moment there I'm afraid,it's not the Ghana flag that I require,it's the Nigerian flag. She's the NNS Otobo(F82), sistership to the NNS Dorina(F81). I haven't a clue where i got Ghana from. :embarrassed: I've ordered up the flag as well as a Rab 25mm 3-blade brass prop(type 1),which with a little luck will slow her down appreciably,to something closer to reality, unlike the warp speed that she's capable of just now. ok2
Does anyone know where I should fly the flag from,or do I need to add a jackstaff to the aft deck?

Now fitted with a Raboesch(type1)25mm 3-blade brass prop. These two video's show just how maneuverable she really is. The first one is of normal ahead running, and the second one is of her going astern.

I'm thinking that I might try making GG's Paladin class semi-scale frigate next from MB Oct 2005 issue. Hopefully it's as straight forward as it seems, though I might modify it slightly to suit myself. :-))

Hi Dreadstar
Pity I was not a member of the forum when you started building Otobo since I have VT's "as fitted" 1:48 General arrangement and numerous detail plans and photos of the Dorina that I obtained during a visit to VT's in 1980.
My model was inspired by a photo on the cover of a Model Boats mag. around then.
Having just returned to model boating after other interests over the past 20 years, I am currently updating the radio and adding detail to my Dorina.
I will post a photo once I have learnt how to do it on this site
Regards

I'd really like to see a 1:48th scale model of the Dorina,so once you've figured out how to post the photo's Bob,then please put them up. :-))

Hi Dreadstar
Hopefully these will appear on the screen.
The model took me about 3 years on and off. I love doing the small bits and at the time wanted to 'get it right'.
The hull is ply bulkheads and skin apart from the bulwarks and flat sides which are .75 mm. styrene.
The deck and superstructure are 1.5 mm. perspex which apparently is now coming into fashion.
Details from brass and perspex. 4" Gun traverses and elevates, Radars revolve, and most lights work.
I am currently changing to 5 channel 2.4 gig radio since the old 29 meg Tx has 'had it'
I will also finish the bridge details (captains chair and gun site etc.) and try to make the ladders if I can still work to that accuracy and vents if I can work out how to build them.
Regards
